Decent series, but with some flaws

I'm not gonna lie, when I first saw that promotional image for the series, I was not impressed with it's art style and character designs. Seeing it in action in this episode, I kinda warmed up to the style and the designs. It's kinda weird the turtles are all different species instead of the same kind of turtle, but hey. Artistic license. However, I honestly feel making April a different skin color was pointless, since she's still April, but the occasional sassy black chick stereotypes popping up. The tone is also a bit too goofy, even by Ninja Turtles standards. Not saying it should be all grim dark, but both the 2003 and 2012 versions had a good balance of these tones. The weapons are also a weirs choice, especially Raphael using Tonfas. On the bright side, it's cool that Donny is pretty stylish and funny in this show, not just being the nerdy tech guy. On the flipside to this, I hate Splinter's characterization; he's a fat lazy oaf who watches TV and eat rather than the usually dedicated sensei who trains The Turtles. I did look up, however, that he will actually train them after their encounter with the main villain in this episode. That explains why they fight so ametuerish in this episode.

Things I gotta give praise to besides the some of the designs are the fights. They are quite energetic and fast paced. I like that like I mentioned before, Donny has more traits to him besides being the nerdy tech guy, and the idea of his staff having tech makes so much sense with his character. On the other hand, Leo seems to be way too silly and kinda dumb, a trait Michaelangelo usually has.

Overall, I give the series, for now, a 6/10
