When massive volcanic storms begin to spew from the Earth, geophysicist Kate Ferris tries to convince the Department of Defense that this is no natural phenomenon. They re the result of a seismic super weapon known as the Hell Storm device; and now that it’s been activated, the shock-waves it sends out will destroy major cities across the globe, killing millions. When her claims fall on deaf ears, Kate teams up with her daughter and estranged husband at the San Andreas fault line to find a way to counteract the destruction. As Kate and her family navigate the fault, they find themselves directly at the epicenter of the largest shock wave yet.

Editors’ Note: Live events were hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic, with sweeping cancellations of festivals, sports and awards shows. Don Mischer is one of the doyens of the live-event business. During his long career, he has produced/directed dozens of high-profile special event-telecasts from the Oscars and Primetime Emmys to Olympics opening ceremonies, the Obama Inauguration, and Super Bowl halftime shows, winning 15 Emmys, 10 DGA Awards and a Peabody Award among many honors. In a column for Deadline, Mischer speaks about the crucial role live audiences have played in creating some of the most memorable moments in TV special history, and how profoundly the audience is missed in the Covid-19 era of virtual events. He also lays out his vision for how live events would look for the foreseeable future as he is prepping for the 2020 The Breakthrough Prize, still on track for November,...

The Evolution Championship Series was set for July 31 to August 2. Thousands of fighting game fans from all over the world would have crammed themselves into a Las Vegas arena to scream along with Cell’s intro animation from Dragon Ball FighterZ. Nine different fighting games were going to be streamed for an online audience over the course of three days in what my wife calls “the most trying weekend of our relationship” because she can’t for the life of her understand why someone would dedicate their weekend to watching strangers play video games.
The line-up of games included Street Fighter V: Champion Edition, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Dragon Ball FighterZ, Tekken 7, Samurai Shodown, Under Night In-Birth Exe: Late[cl-r], and Granblue Fantasy Versus. There was also going to be an eight-player invitational tournament for Marvel vs. Capcom 2, a game that was extremely instrumental in Evo’s early existence.
Unsurprisingly, plans have changed.

Broadcasters across the Arab world are clambering to serve up Ramadan soaps as the coronavirus pandemic forces the world’s 1.8 billion Muslims to observe the Islamic calendar’s holy month at home rather than in a mosque.
Even under normal circumstances, Ramadan — which started on April 24 — is peak TV season for Arab audiences. Middle East TV execs often compare the period to the Super Bowl in the U.S., except for 30 days straight.
Amid the Covid-19 crisis, however, “audiences are bigger than ever due to millions staying at home,” says Mazen Hayek, a spokesman for Dubai-based Mbc, the Arab world’s largest private broadcaster.
Despite the coronavirus outbreak, Mbc is “ready to meet audience expectations” as it does every year, though some series had to be delayed or postponed.

2020 has proven to be an interesting time for animation. Ever since the Coronavirus pandemic closed down movie theaters, the entire film industry has had to recalibrate. Right now, animated fare is thriving, thanks to families being desperate for new things to watch at home. Trolls World Tour had a VOD debut, Onward has been a bigger hit on Digital and Disney+ than it was in theaters, and so on. This week, Netflix joins in with one of their big animated pushes for 2020 in The Willoughbys. A bright and manic flick, it has moments of lively fun and will enthrall younger audience members. As for adults? Well, it won’t be a chore to sit through, at least. The movie is an animated adventure, centering on the title family, and in particular, the children. Narrated by The Cat (voice of Ricky Gervais), we learn of the plight of the youngest Willoughbys.

Within the Star Wars universe, it’s a tragedy that Luke Skywalker knew nothing about his mother, Padme Amidala, Queen of Naboo, Galactic Senator and secret wife of Anakin Skywalker. In the real-world, too, it’s also a crying shame that Mark Hamill and his space mom Natalie Portman have never come face to face, either. However, that’s something the sci-fi legend hopes to correct this year.
One fan sent Hamill a tweet yesterday featuring screenshots from the Prequel Trilogy star’s appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, in which she voiced her interest in meeting Mark. “Natalie Portman said this in a 2018 interview,” the fan said. “”Have you met after that?”
Hamill replied: “Not yet, but it’s very high on my 2020 To-Do List.”

Miami — A technology meltdown at Fontainebleau Miami Beach made for a bumpy start to getting settled at Natpe for numerous executives and producers who arrived here over the weekend. Nonetheless, the core business of the content-sales gathering was humming as numerous distributors reported new deals and renewal pacts inked over the past few days.
The storied hotel’s computer network began suffering what the Fontainebleau’s general manager described as “significant outages within our computer and network systems” starting on Jan. 16. The annual conference and trade show hosted by the National Association of Television Program Executives runs Jan. 21-23, but numerous executives spend the weekend before at the hotel for private meetings and family excursions — it is, after all, a trip to Miami Beach in January.
On Sunday numerous Natpe-goers reported experiencing extremely long waits to check in — “The line was out the door into the lobby,” reported one executive from L.

“1917” and “Ford v Ferrari” split the top sound editing prizes Sunday night at the 67th annual Mpse Golden Reel Awards at the Westin Bonaventure Hotel. “1917” took Dialogue/Adr and “Ford v Ferrari” scored for Effects/Foley. The Elton John musical fantasy, “Rocketman,” earned Musical honors and “Jojo Rabbit” topped Music Underscore.
The other Feature awards went to “Parasite” (Foreign Language), “Toy Story 4” (Animation), and “Echo in the Canyon” (Documentary).
This sets up a competitive sound editing Oscar race between Sam Mendes’ innovative, continuous-shot World War I drama and James Mangold’s thrilling race car biopic. “The absence of visible edits meant it would have been easy to be overwhelmed with sound at times, never being able to cut to a different location to reset,” said Oliver Tarney, supervising sound editor of “1917.” “We worked hard at making sure there were always multiple layers of detail in the work we were doing.

The new year is just beginning, but television is already gearing up to say goodbye to one of its best series: “BoJack Horseman.” Eight episodes remain of Raphael Bob-Waksberg’s acclaimed Netflix animated comedy-drama, and Netflix has debuted the final trailer for the series that teases a major reckoning for television’s most complicated anthropomorphic horse. The final eight episodes serve as the second half of Season 6, which debuted October 25. Can BoJack Horseman change? Viewers are about to find out the answer once and for all.
“I have made a lot of mistakes, but I look back at that other BoJack and think, ‘Who is that?'” BoJack says in the final trailer. “I have had a lot of what I thought were rock bottoms only to discover another rockier bottom underneath. I used to feel like my whole life was an acting job, doing an impression of the people I saw on television,...

Stephen King was the latest in Hollywood to weigh in on the conversation over diversity at the Oscars, and the horror author argued Tuesday that he would “never consider” factoring in diversity when it comes to evaluating art or voting on awards.
King said as a member of the Academy’s writers branch, he was only able to vote on Best Picture and the two screenplay categories, so he wouldn’t have had a say in influencing the lack of racial diversity in the acting categories or the lack of women in the directors’ race (five men were nominated for the second year in a row).
“For me, the diversity issue–as it applies to individual actors and directors, anyway–did not come up,” King wrote on Twitter. “That said, I would never consider diversity in matters of art. Only quality. It seems to me that to do otherwise would be wrong.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is under fire this week following the announcement of the 2020 Oscar nominations, which feature only one acting nominee of color: “Harriet” star Cynthia Erivo for Best Actress. “The Daily Show” host Trevor Noah took a moment during his January 13 show to criticize the Academy for not only shutting out actors of color but for choosing also that the one actor of color to be nominated would be one who played a slave. Erivo stars in “Harriet” as former slave and abolitionist Harriet Tubman.
“I’m glad that at least one black woman was nominated for Best Actress,” Noah said. “Congratulations to Cynthia Erivo, that’s exciting. Although, it is kind of predictable that it was for playing a slave. And I’m not saying she didn’t deserve it, but just imagine if every white actor that was nominated got it for...

Much of the discussion about the 2020 Oscar nominations has concerned the lack of diversity among nominees in the major categories. But Best Actor nominee Antonio Banderas has a more optimistic view:
“It’s taking time, but I think the Oscars are more and more each year, are becoming a worldwide award rather than an American award,” Banderas told TheWrap.
“It’s very different than the Academy I found many decades ago because it is so much more open than it was back then to the styles and cinematography of filmmakers of other countries,” the “Pain & Glory” star said. “People in American film are looking around the corner to see what is happening in other cultures of the world, and I think that’s a part of how connected our world has become.”

The 2020 award season is well underway, and it's not overstating to say the British talent is so strong this year, they're seriously cleaning up. Little Women is one film that's really staking its claim, with the leading actors receiving nomination after nomination at the Golden Globes, the Critics' Choice Awards, and now the Oscars.
The morning after shimmying down the red carpet at the Critics' Choice Awards, Florence Pugh has received a nomination for an Oscar for Little Women, in the category of best supporting actress. She shared a photo to Instagram of the exact moment she heard the news, where, dressed in little other than a bed sheet, she is seen screaming with pure joy. Greta Gerwig put Golden Globe voters in their place while attending the 2020 ceremony earlier this week. During her recent appearance on “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” the “Little Women” director told the late night host about the moment she encountered members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association before the awards show began. Gerwig got inside The Beverly Hilton early as she skipped doing much press on the carpet. It’s here where Gerwig didn’t let HFPA members off the hook after they tried to tell her they wanted her nominated for Best Director.
“I was not nominated, but I was there to support [‘Marriage Story’ director Noah Baumbach]. He was doing all this press and I was just there early. I was in this banquet hall with no one there and then I saw all of the members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association inside and they were like, ‘We voted for you!

The Farewell's writer and director Lulu Wang at the 2020 Golden Globe Awards
When Golden Globes host Ricky Gervais pointed out that no women were nominated for best director at this year's Jan. 5 show, the joke fell flat. "I've had a word with the Hollywood Press, and they've guaranteed that will never happen again," he cracked. "Working with all the major studios, [the HFPA has] agreed to go back to the way things were when they didn't even hire women directors. That will solve the problem." There were a few faint, halfhearted laughs from the audience in the ballroom at the Beverly Hilton, but the fact is, it's an old joke. That it remains a relevant one in 2020 likely hit uncomfortably close to home for the powerbrokers in the room who could change that fact, and as simply too depressing to others to seem funny.

Ricky Gervais has been saying this is his last time hosting the Golden Globes since the first time he hosted the Golden Globes. In 2010, after making a crack about winners buying trophies, the always “unpredictable” comedian explained his apparent devil-may-care attitude by quipping, “I’m not going to do this again anyway.” In 2020, he started the night with that same promise. “You’ll be pleased to know this is the last time I’ll be hosting these awards,” Gervais said. “I don’t care anymore. I’m just kidding. I never did.”
Think about that for a second. The host of a highly anticipated, well-rated awards show — an awards show, mind you, that bills itself as a giant party for famous people — started the night by saying he’s never coming back and he doesn’t care. Now, imagine you walk into a party and the host greets you by saying,...
