You wait the best part of 30 years for one and then two come along at once…Orson Welles movies.
Pieced together from the 1,083 reels of footage for The Other Side Of The Wind (which debuted in 2018), Hopper/Welles is the latest ‘new’ feature from the industry titan, who died in 1985.
Ahead of its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival, we spoke to producer Filip Jan Rymsza about the backstory behind the movie, on which he re-teamed with The Other Side Of The Wind editor Bob Murawski (The Hurt Locker).
The intimate and revelatory documentary captures a 1970 meeting between the Citizen Kane director and the then-rising star Dennis Hopper, who had just made Easy Rider. The encounter came about when Hopper agreed to a cameo role in Welles’ troubled The Other Side Of The Wind. Welles flew Hopper from New Mexico to Los Angeles, where he cooked him a pasta...

Simon Pegg, an actor best known for his roles in major action-adventure franchises like Star Trek and Mission: Impossible, has but one thing to say to people who criticize Black Lives Matter, and that’s: “Shut the f*** up!”
The star said as much in an interview with the British newspaper The Observer. Aside from discussing the recent political developments in the world, the actor also talked about the upcoming Mission: Impossible 7, as well as his interest in personal therapy and his latest picture, Lost Transmissions.
When Pegg brought up the subject of Black Lives Matter, he mentioned that he’s been attending meetings with Cephas Williams, a civil rights activist whose campaign 56 Black Men aims to challenge negative stereotypes of black culture. According to The Observer reporter Miranda Sawyer, these meetings are meant to “help make inroads for black performers, writers and directors.”

Director Katharine O’Brien makes her feature debut with Lost Transmissions, an La-set drama about mental illness and its effect on a budding friendship between stars Juno Temple and Simon Pegg. Following a world premiere at Tribeca in April, O’Brien brought this intimate two-hander to the American Film Festival in Wroclaw, where she enjoyed an enthusiastic audience reception for its refreshingly grounded depiction of schizophrenia. Writing her own material (after her script for The Automatic Hate in 2015) in addition to directing, and drawing from personal experience with people close to her, the Californian filmmaker examines the blind spots of support systems, both institutional and private, and eschews grand narrative arcs in favor of a realistic approach to the subject.…...

Allan Hunter reflects on the 16th edition.
Glasgow Film Festival co-director Allan Hunter reflected on the 16th edition, which drew record audience numbers and a surprise guest in Simon Pegg, as an indirect result of the coronavirus outbreak.
Can you talk about how you feel this year’s festival has gone?
Going into this year, I felt it was a diverse, wide-ranging programme and wondered if audiences would come out… and they have. They’re up for any challenge. As part of our retrospective programme, we had 260 people come to a free screening of Andrei Tarkovsky’s Stalker. They were queuing out the door.

Don’t hold your breath for a fourth Star Trek movie from Paramount.
That’s the stark message from Simon Pegg, whose engineer Montgomery ‘Scotty’ Scott has grown into something of a fan-favorite among Trekkies. It’s a similar story behind the lens, too, given Pegg went on to co-write Beyond, the third entry documenting the space-faring adventures of Chris Pine’s James T. Kirk and Zachary Quinto’s Spock.
Alas, it’s looking increasingly likely that Beyond will be the last Star Trek movie for a while, after Simon Pegg told GamesRadar+ that Paramount’s mishandling of the 2016 blockbuster essentially scuppered any momentum for a fourth film. That, and the very tragic death of Anton Yelchin (Chekov), who passed away in 2016.
I don’t feel like the last one…they didn’t really take advantage of the 50th anniversary. The regimen at the time dropped the ball on the promo of the film.

Simon Pegg said that any urgency from himself or the rest of the cast and crew to make another “Star Trek” movie has slowed after the death of Anton Yelchin in 2016.
“I think losing Anton was a huge blow to our little family, and our enthusiasm to do another one might have been affected by that,” the actor said in an interview with Games Radar+ while promoting his latest film “Lost Transmissions.”
Yelchin, who played Chekov in the rebooted “Star Trek” movies, died in a freak accident in June of 2016 just a month before the third film in the franchise “Star Trek Beyond,” premiered.

It’s been almost four years now since Star Trek Beyond arrived in theaters, and in all that time, another cinematic entry in the sci-fi franchise has yet to go into production.
Suffice to say, the Star Trek film series is currently in a state of uncertainty, and according to franchise regular Simon Pegg, this recent slowing down can partly be attributed to the passing of Anton Yelchin back in 2016.
The Montgomery “Scotty” Scott actor recently spoke to GamesRadar+ and Total Film while promoting his new movie Lost Transmissions. When the subject of Star Trek came up, Pegg implied that the relatively modest box office of the film series, compared to the biggest comic book movies, means that Paramount has to be careful about pushing forward with a new project.

“It always inspires conversation and debate,” Simon Pegg says about screenings of the independent film “Lost Transmissions,” in which he plays against type as a schizophrenic music producer opposite Juno Temple. The directorial debut from Katharine O’Brien recently opened the 19th Whistler Film Festival, where Pegg was honored with a Maverick Award for career achievement. He sat down with Gold Derby for an exclusive interview (watch above) about his plethora of ongoing projects and revealed that “Lost Transmissions” has secured an American distributor for a springtime release.

How much can a pair of tremendous performances elevate a feature? Is a movie ultimately flawed if the acting is what makes it worth seeing? On the flip side, can a duo on screen drag a film across the finish line? If you’ve read my reviews in the past, you’ll know I think that performance can overcome other flaws, so Lost Transmissions is in luck. One of the titles to have just played at the 2019 Tribeca Film Festival, it’s a flick that needed the acting within it in order to survive. Just what do I mean? Well, read on for more… The film is a melodrama about two troubled individuals, though one is struggling way more with mental illness. For Hannah (Juno Temple), life is hard, but she’s not suffering like Theo Ross (Simon Pegg). When they meet at a party, she’s charmed by the music producer.

In movies, the ’60s and ’70s were the heyday of adorable kooks, mentally impaired cuddle bears like the hero of “Charly,” and saintly schizophrenic victims like Gena Rowlands in “A Woman Under the Influence.” Mental illness, in general, was viewed through a softer lens than the one we employ today, partly because of the whole who’s really sane in a crazy world? ideology of the time.
All of which makes “Lost Transmissions,” written and directed by Katharine O’Brien, a minor indie oddball. The movie stars Juno Temple, her face a cozy mask of pain, as some sort of depressive Los Angeles art-pop songwriter and Simon Pegg as a mouthy expat-Brit record producer who knows how to take command — until it’s revealed, early on, that he has a tendency to collapse into fits of schizophrenic delusion. This has been happening ever since he dropped acid and had a...
