Margot Robbie (“Mary Queen of Scots”) was among the more surprising nominations last week for the Screen Actors Guild Awards, which was a big surge for her film after it had underperformed at other awards season events. Pundits had pegged Robbie and co-star Saoirse Ronan — both Oscar nominees for Best Actress just last year — as major contenders early on this season, but then another film about British royals, “The Favourite,” stole some of its thunder with critics and prognosticators. Is “Mary” once again in it to win it?

Ahead of the film’s theatrical release on December 7, the 18th Whistler Film Festival opened with the Canadian premiere of “Mary,” which Director of Programming Paul Gratton introduced as a “feminist-revisionist” take and an “acting exercise above all.” True to its title, the film centers on Ronan as Mary Stuart, who navigates the politics...

Amy Adams better start doing some bicep curls because you think she’ll have her hands full at the Screen Actors Guild Awards. In a recent poll, a whopping 85 percent of our readers say Adams has the best shot at converting her two individual nominations into wins.
Adams has film and TV bids for her supporting turn in “Vice” and her starring role in the HBO limited series “Sharp Objects,” respectively. She’s the early odds-on favorite in both races, so if she goes 2-for-2, she’d be the third person to take home two individual statuettes in one night. The first two were Helen Mirren, who won for “The Queen” (2006) and the miniseries “Elizabeth I,” and Idris Elba, who prevailed for “Beasts of No Nation” (2015) and “Luther.”

Amy Adams, Emily Blunt and Emma Stone all got two individual Screen Actors Guild Awards nominations on Wednesday, but can any of them turn both their bids into wins?
Only two performers have taken home two individual SAG Awards in one night: Helen Mirren and Idris Elba. Mirren won lead actress en route to her Oscar victory for “The Queen” (2006) and was honored for playing another monarch in the miniseries “Elizabeth I,” for which she later won an Emmy. Elba received SAG Awards for his supporting turn in “Beasts of No Nation” (2015) and for limited series/TV movie actor for “Luther.” He remains the only SAG champ whose performance did not receive an Oscar nomination.

Amy Adams and Regina King will be Golden Globe winners and losers next month. The double nominees are up against each other in the same two categories — Best Film Supporting Actress and Best Limited Series/TV Movie Actress — and our early predictions are forecasting one win for each of them.
King has a commanding lead in the film race for “If Beale Street Could Talk,” boasting 16/5 odds to 39/10 for Adams, who’s nominated for “Vice” and is in second. The critical darling, King has practically swept the critics circuit so far, including victories at the New York Film Critics Circle and the Los Angeles Film Critics Association, and has been the “representative win” for “Beale Street.” She’s also fresh off her third Emmy triumph in four years, for “Seven Seconds.”
