Ahsoka‘s Grand Admiral Thrawn will sound very familiar, now that it has been confirmed that Lars Mikkelsen, who voiced the villain in Star Wars Rebels, will return to play him on the live-action Star Wars series.
The casting was confirmed on Saturday at Star Wars Celebration in London — and in the wake of Mikkelsen repeatedly denying that he would reprise the role. (Just weeks ago, he told a Danish publication, “I haven’t heard anything about it…. [T]hey should have approached me, but they haven’t. So it must be someone else, unfortunately.”)

In a bid to reinvigorate the Star Wars film franchise, Lucasfilm has announced three new movies, as well as the return of Daisy Ridley as Rey. The news came during the Star Wars Celebration event in London on Friday, where Ridley made a surprise appearance alongside Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy.
The movies don’t appear to be a classic Star Wars trilogy, as each is set in a different time period. Coming from director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy (Ms. Marvel), the Rey-centered feature will pick up 15 years after Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker. Ridley’s fan-favorite character will be found coming into her role as a Jedi Master working to rebuild the Jedi order.
The script comes from Steven Knight (Peaky Blinders), who took over screenwriting duties from Damon Lindelof (HBO’s Watchmen) and Justin Britt-Gibson (Counterpart) after the pair left the project in February. By taking on the project,...

The “Star Wars” movie future just came into sharper focus: Daisy Ridley’s Rey will be the center of the first “Star Wars” feature film since 2019’s “The Rise of Skywalker,” Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy announced at Star Wars Celebration in London on Friday. Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy (“Ms. Marvel”) will direct from a script by Steven Knight (“Peaky Blinders”). The film follows the events of “Rise of Skywalker,” and will focus on Rey as she builds a new Jedi Order.
The project marks several major milestones for the franchise: Obaid-Chinoy is the first woman and the first person of color to direct a “Star Wars” movie. The Pakistani filmmaker won two Academy Awards for documentary short, in 2011 for “Saving Face” and in 2015 for “A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness,” and she most recently directed two episodes of “Ms. Marvel” for Disney+.
“It’s just exciting,” Jon Favreau told Variety after the panel.

Though his life and accomplishments were largely erased under Napoleon, the extraordinary figure at the center of Stephen Williams’ “Chevalier” really did exist. Born on the Caribbean island of Guadeloupe, the son of a white plantation owner and his Black slave, Joseph Bologne went on to excel in spheres rarely accessible to people of color in 18th-century French society. Here was a champion swordsman and celebrated musician invited to play his violin at Versailles, where Marie Antoinette reportedly accompanied him on the harpsichord.
So why has it taken so long for his story to be told?
The time certainly seems right to rediscover the Chevalier — an honorary title that reveals how high Bologne rose under France’s overtly racist Code Noir, as well as a fitting name for the film. A compelling example of Black excellence dating back even before the French Revolution, the English-language “Chevalier” doesn’t feel nearly...

After a work-in-progress version of Robert Rodriguez’s Hypnotic was screened at SXSW, audiences were pumped to see the whole thing. The first trailer for Hypnotic was released today, which gives us a taste of the psychological thriller starring Ben Affleck.
Ben Affleck stars as Danny Rourke, an Austin detective determined to find his missing daughter. Instead, he finds himself spiraling down a rabbit hole while investigating a series of reality-bending bank robberies where he will ultimately call into question his most basic assumptions about everything and everyone in his world. Rourke is aided by Diana Cruz (Alice Braga), an unnervingly gifted psychic, while he simultaneously pursues and is pursued by a lethal specter (William Fichtner) – the one man he believes holds the key to finding the missing girl – only to discover more than he ever bargained for. With 17 of the last 20 DGA Award winners going on to secure the Oscar for Best Director, the Director’s Guild of America plays a pivotal role in who wins an Academy Award. Momentum is key for film’s grueling winter awards circuit, and now we’ll wait and see if Dan Kwan and Daniel Scheinert have enough to make it 18 of the last 21.
In TV, there is no waiting — not this year. While the DGA Awards can certainly play their part in the Emmy race — having boosted future darlings like “Succession,” “Watchmen,” and “The Queen’s Gambit” — the 2023 winners already had their shot at Emmy glory. Nominations may still prove valuable to freshman series like “Wednesday” and “The Bear” (not to mention “Better Call Saul’s” last chance to win its first Emmy), but Saturday night’s ceremony will have little to no effect on what’s next.

For those like me who pay way too much attention to these sorts of things, you may remember the news that filmmaker J.J. Abrams had signed an immensely profitable deal with Warner Bros. Discovery. This enabled him to write, produce, and direct various projects on both the big screen and small, with the freedom to sell certain projects to other distributors as well as producing original stories for Warner Bros. and HBO Max. Discerning readers may also recall that, in the years since, absolutely nothing has actually come from that high-profile agreement -- not for lack of trying, mind you. There was that double-whammy announcement of a "Justice League Dark" project and a spin-off of "The Shining" called "Overlook" that had nerds everywhere all hyped up. Unfortunately, those ultimately never came to fruition for various reasons, along with an incredibly expensive sci-fi series called "Demimonde."

“Duster,” an eight-episode drama from “Lost” creator J.J. Abrams and Latoya Morgan, has been ordered to series by HBO Max, it was announced Thursday. The order comes almost three years after “Duster” was first revealed to be in development at the streamer in April 2021.
Additionally, Max unveiled the cast for the 1972-set series, with Rachel Hilson starring as Nina, a young Black FBI agent who journeys to the Southwest on an assignment to take down a crime syndicate. Josh Holloway, best known for playing Sawyer in Abrams’ ABC series “Lost,” stars opposite Hilson as Jim, a getaway driver recruited to help Nina on her mission; his casting was first reported by Variety in 2021.
“We are delighted to bring this high-voltage crime caper from the brilliant minds of J.J. Abrams and Latoya Morgan to the HBO Max audience,” HBO Max head of original content Sarah Aubrey said in a statement.

J.J. Abrams and HBO Max are officially putting a series into gear.
The streamer has picked up Duster, a 1970s-set drama from Abrams and Latoya Morgan (Into the Badlands, The Walking Dead). Rachel Hilson (Love, Victor, This Is Us) and Josh Holloway, who worked with Abrams on Lost, head the cast.
Duster is the first series to spring from a nine-figure film and TV deal Abrams’ Bad Robot company signed with WarnerMedia (now Warner Bros. Discovery) in 2019. In April 2020, Duster was one of three Bad Robot projects announced for the yet-to-launch HBO Max, along with The Shining offshoot Overlook and a Justice League Dark project. The latter two have since been scrapped (Bad Robot has shopped Overlook to other possible buyers), as has Abrams’ long-developing sci-fi series Demimonde (which was for the HBO parent channel) after concerns over its projected 200 million-plus budget.

After much anticipation, the new James Gunn and Peter Safran-led DC Studios has finally announced their upcoming film and TV slate. The goal is to create a giant connected shared story spread out across movies, TV, and even gaming. Characters will move fluidly in and out of animation and into live action, and there’s a special DC Elseworlds label to distinguish standalone efforts and visions (such as Todd Phillips’ R-rated Joker movies).
But within the actual Dcu shared universe, there are some surprises. Amongst familiar faced l ike Superman, Batman, Green Lantern, and even Supergirl, there’s shockers like a Wonder Woman prequel drama with a Game of Thrones flavor and a Creature Commandos animated series. But perhaps there’s no choice more shocking than the one Gunn is seemingly most excited for: The Authority.

While filming The Whale, Darren Aronofsky’s divisive new drama about a morbidly obese man, Hong Chau did something many would consider unforgivable: she smacked Brendan Fraser. Playing the caregiver to Fraser’s ailing Charlie – a man so stricken with grief that he’s eating himself to death – Chau wanted to convey someone at the very end of her tether. In a moment of improvisation, she slapped Fraser’s arm. It made Aronofsky wince. He cut the cameras and took Chau aside.

The production of "Titanic" has gotten plenty of attention for its record-setting 200 million budget, but as the film's scheduled July 1997 release date approached, the public's attention was equally as locked onto the schedule delays as much as the ballooning costs. After principal photography expanded to an unprecedented 160 days, representing over a month of additional shooting, filming finally wrapped on March 23, 1997 and post-production could enter full swing.

This article contains spoilers about "Knock at the Cabin."
We all know that there's no such thing as a 1:1 adaptation. Even something like Zack Snyder's "Watchmen," which brings exact panels to life complete with the original comic book dialogue, futzed with the ending. There are still some comic book fans who are angry about the lack of giant squid to this very day.
It's to be expected that any adaptation is going to come with some changes. Reading a book is different from watching a movie, after all, and a good screenwriter will know when to change things up for a visual storytelling medium and when the original text had it right. Steve Desmond, Michael Sherman, and M. Night Shyamalan's take on Paul Tremblay's "The Cabin at the End of the World" is very faithful ... until it isn't. And then it very much changes the core...

Superhero movies dominate the movie industry, but very rarely do they actually adapt the comic books that gave them life in the first place — and when we do get a movie that is influenced by or tried to adapt a comic book, they are often changed to the point where its hard to recognize the influence. Movies like "Captain America: Civil War," and "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice," only take the most barebones premise from the comics and forget about everything else. When it comes to Marvel especially, they have now built such an intricate universe that there is no way to do 1:1 adaptations of the comics.
This is why James Gunn's plans for new DC movies are exciting, with the idea that they seem to be taking a bigger inspiration from comics or at least crediting them to the point where trades are selling out.

Now a federal holiday, Juneteenth (June 19) commemorates the end of slavery in the U.S. Although this day marks just the beginning of an ongoing battle for equality, Juneteenth represents an opportunity to celebrate the joy of the Black experience as much as the hardship. And TheWrap’s got a great list of films to get that celebration started.
Once you’ve checked out some of the more educational Juneteenth-related fare, like “13th” or “I Am Not Your Negro,” consider adding some of these flicks to your streaming list.
“Soul” (Disney+)
“Soul,” Pixar’s first film to feature an African-American protagonist, follows Joe Gardener, a middle school music teacher with dreams of becoming a jazz star. When Joe dies prematurely before receiving his big break, he gets a second chance at his fantasy when accidentally enters the Great Before — a place that prepares unborn souls for real life. Andy Samberg and Jean Smart have teamed up for a unique May-December romantic comedy titled 42.6 Years, which is in development at Amazon Studios.
Craig Gillespie, the filmmaker behind Cruella and I, Tonya, is on board to direct the feature.
Samberg came up with the original idea and co-wrote the story with Seth Reiss, a writer on Late Night With Seth Meyers who is coming off a WGA Award nomination for The Menu. Reiss then wrote the script, which landed on the 2022 Black List.
The story centers on a young man (Samberg) who, in order to save his life, undergoes an experimental procedure in which he’s cryogenically frozen. When he wakes up 42.6 years later, physically unchanged thanks to being frozen, he finds himself alone in a future with no one to turn to but his ex-girlfriend, who is now much older than him (and played by Smart).

It should come as no surprise that character actor Tim Blake Nelson — who led the western anthology film The Ballad of Buster Scruggs and played the unforgettable Looking Glass in the HBO series Watchmen — has written a novel. After all, he’s always been the bookish one on set. According to Joel and Ethan Coen, who cast Blake in the Homeric comedy O Brother, Where Art Thou?, neither they nor the other leads had ever read the Odyssey, on which the movie was loosely based. But Blake, who majored in classics at Brown University,...

Exclusive: Following a competitive bidding war, Warner Bros TV has landed the Mac Smullen spec pilot Souvenir, Alaska. Carly Wray will exec produce and oversee development, while Lee Toland Krieger will exec produce and direct the pilot. Wbtv, where both have overall deals, had no comment on the project.
Sources say four other networks were chasing the pilot before Wbtv put in the winning bid. While plot details are being kept under wraps, sources close to the pilot describe it as a cross between a Stephen King and Michael Crichton story.
Wray has become one of the more seasoned producers in television working on such shows as Westworld, The Leftovers and Watchmen, for which she won an Emmy. She is repped by WME and Grandview.

This post contains spoilers for the first four episodes of "The Last of Us."
In today's arts and entertainment landscape, it seems that all bets are off when it comes to defining a work and its intentions: the terms "remake," "adaptation," "reboot," "reimagining," "rebootquel" and more are tossed around willy-nilly, with new descriptors being Frankensteined together every year. It's a reaction to the rampant increase of stories being told, retold, and revisited as Hollywood and its ilk seek to minimize risk by exploiting material they believe to be pre-sold. It's a real catch-22, to make something old seem new again.
HBO's "The Last of Us" series is being touted as an adaptation, and on the face of it this appears to be the correct term, given that the story first appeared in one medium (video games) and is now moving to another (live-action television). Yet, in execution, it's not so cut and dried.

Future Of DC Universe and Upcoming Slate From DC Studios Reveals First Chapter – ‘Gods and Monsters’
DC Fans received big news on Tuesday when James Gunn announced plans for DC Studios.
James Gunn and Peter Safran have unveiled the first ten interconnected DC Studios projects—five movies and five HBO Max TV series. All ten of them are set within the same shared universe and will frequently share characters. However, while not included below, there will be films set outside the shared continuity—like the already announced Joker: Folie à Deux from director Todd Phillips and Matt Reeves’ upcoming The Batman sequel.
“The Dcu’s a multiverse, but we’re going to be focusing on one universe from that multiverse,” explains Safran. “And if something isn’t Dcu, we’re going to make that very clear. So, strictly adult fare like Todd Phillips’ Joker, or kids animation like Teen Titans Go!, we’re going to make it very clear that those are DC Elseworlds, just the...

James Mangold may be bringing one of DC’s creepiest heroes to life. The “Logan” and “Ford v. Ferrari” director is reportedly in early talks to tackle “Swamp Thing,” one of the upcoming films from DC Studio’s first chapter of movies under James Gunn and Peter Safran’s command, THR first reported Wednesday.
It’s unclear whether Mangold would both write and direct the film or his exact involvement. Mangold did however seem to confirm his interest on his Twitter, via a post with a panel from the character’s comic series, drawn by co-creator Bernie Wrightson. The post was also retweeted by Gunn.

Representatives from Warner Bros. Discovery. Sources told IndieWire that Mangold is a longtime “Swamp Thing” fan who approached the new regime at DC with his idea for the film, and that he will both direct and write should the project go forward.

The highly-anticipated second season of “Peacemaker” has been delayed, DC co-ceo James Gunn revealed during a presentation on the upcoming Dcu slate that TheWrap attended along with a small group of reporters.
Gunn said that he’s been too busy writing a new “Superman” movie and the upcoming animated DC series “Creature Commandos” and, as a result, “Peacemaker” Season 2 got pushed. But not to worry — a previously announced spinoff based on Viola Davis’ Amanda Waller will help kick off a new era of Dcu storytelling.
“Viola is still playing Waller and she has Team Peacemaker in this,” Gunn noted. “This is really a continuation from Peacemaker.”
“Waller” will be written by Christal Henry (“Watchmen”) and Jeremy Carver (“Doom Patrol”) and executive produced by Gunn and Safran.

The future is finally here for DC fans. After years of false starts from a parade of creatives, and months of teases, DC Studios heads James Gunn and Peter Safran finally shared their vision for DC movies and TV series going forward, christened, simply enough as the Dcu. The pair outlined what they called “the first part of the first chapter” of the Dcu, with that first chapter known as “Gods and Monsters.” It’s a combination of five films and five HBO Max series which will have story elements that weave between each other, and ultimately lay the foundation for a new, cohesive DC Universe.
Of course, it’s not as simple as that (it never is). There are still the four DC movies coming out this year, which Gunn and Safran are playing coy about, including who will stick around as their current characters. However, Gunn said that...

After weeks of chatter and rumor, DC Studios heads James Gunn and Peter Safran have finally unveiled 10 different projects that compose the first chapter of a long-term, interconnected universe of movies and shows based on the DC comics characters. Among them: new Superman, Batman, Supergirl, and Swamp Thing feature films, as well as new series built around the Green Lantern, the origins of Wonder Woman’s birthplace, and one centered around Viola Davis’ Amanda Waller character.
These new projects, formally unveiled on Tuesday after a Monday press conference and presentation, form part of the DC Universe (Dcu). Each film and series is currently in various states of development and will either be theatrically released features via Warner Bros. or HBO Max series, set to roll out over a span of two to three years. I spent a decade of my life happily working in a comic shop, so I got used to people asking for my recommendations. Most of the time, customers were happy to try out the books I suggested. However, my toughest sell was always one of the comics I was most passionate about: Swamp Thing.
Alan Moore's seminal run on the book — more on that later — was something I discovered very early on in my own reading journey due to the writer's undeniable impact on Neil Gaiman, who served as my introduction to comics via "The Sandman." Once I had finished every Gaiman book I could find, I got started on the work of Alan Moore, whom he had cited as a major influence.
Of course, I loved "Watchmen" and "V For Vendetta," both undisputed classics, but it was Moore's work on "Swamp Thing" that truly blew my teenage mind.

It’s impressive to see the sheer volume and quality of genre projects with which actor Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (“Trial of The Chicago 7”) has been involved in such a short period. Some of them include Nia DaCosta’s “Candyman” soft-reboot, Michael Bay’s heist thriller “Ambulance,” playing a new incarnation of Morpheus in Lana Wachowski’s “The Matrix Resurrections,” a major villain in the two “Aquaman” movies from director James Wan, and earning an Emmy award for his performance on the HBO series “Watchmen.” Well, the rising star has nabbed another significant role in a comic book project.

Marvel Studios has its Wonder Man.
Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is set to join the Disney+ series “Wonder Man” as Simon Williams, who transforms into the titular superhero. It will be Abdul-Mateen’s third major comic book character, after playing the villain Black Manta in 2018’s “Aquaman” and Dr. Manhattan in HBO’s 2019 series “Watchmen,” for which he won an Emmy. He’s already set to reprise Black Manta in “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom,” currently scheduled for Christmas 2023.
Filmmaker Destin Daniel Cretton, who directed Marvel’s 2021 feature “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” is developing “Wonder Man” with head writer Andrew Guest, as part of Cretton’s overall deal with Marvel Studios and Onyx Collective. Cretton may direct as well, though he’s got a crowded plate: He’s already set to direct 2025’s “Avengers: The Kang Dynasty” and he’s expected to helm the prospective (though unannounced) “Shang-Chi” sequel.

The largely autobiographical film "Armageddon Time" (read our review here) from director James Gray starring Jeremy Strong, Anne Hathaway, and Anthony Hopkins arrives in theaters this weekend. Gray isn't wasting any time getting his next project off the ground, with Deadline reporting that MadRiver Pictures has hired Gray to direct a biopic about John F. Kennedy that will focus on the former president's military career. The as-yet-untitled project plans to follow a young JFK who longs to distinguish himself and prove his worth to his powerful father. The story will chronicle JFK's harrowing true adventures in WWII when a Japanese destroyer sank his patrol boat and left Kennedy and his men shipwrecked.
Gray, who just received a Gotham Awards nomination for Best Screenplay, will rewrite a script from Samuel Franco and Evan Kilgore. Pre-production on Gray's next film, "I Am Pilgrim," is currently underway, so production on the biopic will begin sometime next year.

Captain Ahab: The Story of Dave Stieb. Some old classification anxieties up front: what is cinema? Is it just a cultural object that moves twice, first in narrative operation and then as technology, a montage of the photographic or pixelated? Is it the truth at 24 frames/franchises per second, or is there a cinematic something that differentiates “film” from its cousin, “new media”? And (how) does that matter anyway? Maybe the idea of “film” is related to what’s loggable on Letterboxd: movies, sure, but also some TV shows. No to music videos, yes to (some) porn. Yes to lots of Taylor Swift live shows; John Berger’s 1972 series of video essays, Ways of Seeing; and the boring-delirious, 28-minute film made for closed-circuit Vegas televisions, Caesar’s Guide to Gaming With Orson Welles. Sporting events aren't included, but there are sports documentaries and documentations, lots of sports “content”—like something...

Alan Moore is not impressed by any of his adaptations. The co-creator of “Lost” and Emmy-winning executive producer of “Watchmen” is developing a new “Star Wars” movie for Lucasfilm — and the top-secret project has already a director warming up their hyper-drive: Oscar-winner and “Ms. Marvel” helmer Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy is in talks to direct. Lindelof will co-write the new movie, with his writing partner revealed to be emerging talent Justin Britt-Gibson (“Counterpart”).
Should the project get a greenlight, it would be Lindelof’s fourth foray into revitalizing a major sci-fi franchise. Along with his re-imaginative continuation of “Watchmen” for HBO in 2019 — for which he won Emmys for writing and limited series — Lindelof produced 2009’s “Star Trek” and produced and co-wrote 2013’s “Star Trek Into Darkness,” and he co-wrote the 2012 “Alien” prequel “Prometheus.”

Despite the egregious snubbing of David Lowery's "The Green Knight" during last year's Academy Awards ceremony, real ones know that the film was one of the very best of 2021. The epic medieval fantasy film from A24 based on the 14th-century poem "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight," saw Dev Patel as King Arthur's nephew Gawain, who sets out on the ultimate journey to test his bravery and come face-to-face with the titular Green Knight.
The film is about to receive a special Blu-ray collector's edition (not to be confused with the 2021 Blu-ray release) next month, and according to our friends over at Collider, one of the included special features will be a 20-minute companion short film from Lowery called "The Oak Thorn & The Old Rose of Love." The short film will loosely connect to "The Green Knight," focusing on two characters that share knowledge in "unconventional ways."

Damon Lindelof is heading to a galaxy far, far away. The acclaimed “Lost” and “The Leftovers” creator is developing a new “Star Wars” film and reportedly just selected “Ms. Marvel” director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy to direct the project.
As originally reported by Deadline, Lindelof is writing the new project, which will be the first film he’s worked on since 2020’s “The Hunt.” The producer and screenwriter is well known for his work in the science fiction realm, with franchises including “Star Trek,” “Alien,” and DC Comics’ “Watchmen,” which he developed an acclaimed TV sequel for in 2019.
IndieWire has reached out to Lucasfilm for comment.
No plot details or if any previously existing characters will be featured have been revealed. The news arrives during an extended absence of “Star Wars” in theaters, with the franchise releasing most of its installments on Disney+ in the form of series like “The Mandalorian,” “The Book of Boba Fett,...

You've heard of "Secret Wars;" now, prepare to have your mind blown by a Secret Star War, waged by none other than Damon Lindelof. Back in March, reports circulated that Lindelof, the co-creator and/or showrunner of "Lost," "The Leftovers," and HBO's "Watchmen," was working on a hush-hush "Star Wars" movie. It appears those rumors are true, as Deadline now reports, based on info from multiple sources, that Lindelof is indeed co-writing a new "Star Wars" film and that Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy — who most recently helmed two episodes of the Disney+ series "Ms. Marvel" — is attached to direct.
For moviegoers, this is big news, as there hasn't been a new "Star Wars" film since the 2019 release of "The Rise of Skywalker," directed by Lindelof's old "Lost" and "Star Trek" buddy, J.J. Abrams. That movie left a sour taste in the mouths of many, and since then, "Star Wars" has pivoted...
