Kana’s saga comes to a bizarre, melancholy end. But it all looks really cool!

Flcl Alternative: Episode 6
The conundrum hanging over both Flcl sequel series was what, indeed, could define a Flcl sequel? How do you extend a series characterized by a fleeting and unpredictable uniqueness? What makes Flcl Flcl? Is it about robots coming out of kids’ heads? Is it about Haruko trying to get with a giant bird (it’s not)? Is it more just about a feeling, or a style, or is it, like, a thematic thing… or something?
Progressive and Alternative attempted to solve this conundrum by doing a bit of everything. Haruko was all over each season (a choice I still question for both series) and robots still came out of kids’ heads. However, both also told new stories that veered massively away from the events of FLCLassic.

The action and drama escalate in unison in an extraordinarily good penultimate episode.
Flcl Alternative struggled with a bit of an identity crisis in its early episodes, coming off like a good slice-of-life anime unfortunately muddled by the burden of having to honor the Flcl label. It did a better job of merging its two identities in the fourth episode, bringing Haruko and Medical Mechanica more to the forefront. And now, with “Shake it Off,” Alternative builds on that previous episode and brilliantly forms itself into a cohesive work. Accomplishing a feat I’d honestly given up hoping for, Alternative has transformed into a series with its own identity that also fits into the Flcl universe.
On the Flcl side of things, Medical Mechanica is now fully back to their old tricks of using giant irons to flatten out the planet. As in FLCLassic, this is given as much attention...

Alternative continues to be a compelling slice-of-life anime that also has Haruko in it sometimes.

Flcl Alternative: Episode 3
The original Flcl is my all-time favorite anime. One of my other favorites is Genshiken, a slice-of-life series about an otaku college club. It really couldn’t be any more different than the surreal spectacle that is Flcl.
In one story arc of Genshiken, the characters work together to put together a doujinshi in time for a manga convention. This episode of Flcl Alternative, in which Mossan and Kana work together so Mossan can design a dress in time for a fashion contest, gave me some Genshiken vibes. But seeing as this is Flcl, Haruko also showed up to whack a robot, beat up some policemen, and, uh, perform a rap.
The thing is that, for more of its running time than not, Flcl Alternative is...
