The report should serve as a wake-up call to streamers who take younger audiences for granted, especially as they continue to add live sports.
Could an avalanche of new sports deals for streaming platforms be coming? The floodgates certainly seem to have opened, as more and more streaming providers like Disney+, Prime Video, and even Netflix are adding live sports content to their on-demand services. But is this what future generations of audiences want? A new report from the Financial Times cites two surveys that indicate that Gen Z viewers aren’t watching live sports at anywhere near the level of older generations, and that means streaming services will have to get more creative to bring in younger customers in a future where sports are increasingly found on digital platforms.
Key Details: One survey shows that only 31% of viewers aged 18-24 watched a live sporting event in 2023. Only 53% of Gen Zers identify as sports fans,...

A total of 36 out of 40 Fever games will be played on nationally-available channels this season, and her May 14 debut is set to become a first in the history of the Disney+ streaming service. ESPN has announced that Clark’s first-ever game with the fever on May 14 will be available live on Disney+, and will also air on ESPN2 as well as ESPN+. Additionally, Tegna has announced that 11 more markets will join the footprint of Wthr, the Tegna-owned Indianapolis NBC station that carries Fever games in that area, ensuring that the maximum number of fans can see Clark’s first season.

The month is a prime time to have Disney+, what with the ongoing and buzzy success of “X-Men 97” and upcoming “Marvel Studios’ Assembled” going behind the scenes of the reboot series. May is of course the month of Star Wars, and the House of Mouse will celebrate with “Star Wars: Tales of the Empire” on May 4. Disney is also home to BBC America’s “Doctor Who,” which returns for a highly-anticipated 14th season with Ncuti Gatwa stepping into the Tardis as the new Doctor (he stepped into the role in December 2023 as part of the series’ beloved Christmas special tradition).

There are several popular social media accounts that graph weekly cable network schedules, and it’s always stunning to see how many schedulers have just given up. Nearly every cable network, large and small, now mostly program marathons of their most popular shows.
You know about “Ridiculousness” on MTV, of course. But did you know how much time Disney Channel runs “Big City Greens,” Nick Jr. airs “Paw Patrol,” Adult Swim telecasts “Bob’s Burgers” and “American Dad,” and Nick at Nite runs “Friends”? A lot.
As basic cable gets zombified, the double-digit declines continue. Live sports, of course, is saving the broadcast networks and some cable networks still in that game. And then there’s the interesting case of the diginets, which have managed to keep their declines small as they program a wider range of nostalgia fare to aging adults. Exclusive: Sony Pictures Animation is in development on a new fantasy-adventure feature from Matt Braly, the creator of Disney’s multiple Emmy-nominated animated series, Amphibia.
Braly comes to the as-yet-untitled project after working for the studio as a storyboard artist on The Mitchells vs the Machines, the Academy Award-nominated feature produced by Lord Miller, which was released on Netflix in 2021.
Drawing on his own cultural background and personal history, the film tells the story of a young boy who goes on an emotional journey to a fantastical world of Thai spirits where he hopes to have his illness cured. Braly will direct from his script written with Rebecca Sugar (Cartoon Network’s Steven Universe).
Chronicling the adventures of the 13-year-old Thai-American Anne Boonchuy (Brenda Song) within a fantasy world full of frogs, toads, and giant insects, Braly’s show Amphibia ran for three seasons on Disney Channel from 2019-2022. A renowned animator,...

When it comes to guest appearances on the new "Frasier" revival, all the talk has been about returning stars from the original series. The 10–episode reboot show has so far seen the return of Frasier's ex-wife, former "Cheers" co-star, and frequent "Frasier" guest star Lilith (Bebe Neuwirth). Soon we'll also see the return of Peri Gilpin, who played the doctor's radio show producer, Roz, in the original series. Alas, we won't be treated to a guest appearance by David Hyde Pierce's Niles after the actor turned down the opportunity to return for the new show.
I would say it's all been exciting stuff, but really it's been vaguely amusing stuff that feels at once comfortable and uncanny — like we're watching an alternate reality version of "Frasier" written by super-fans that's not as good as the original. Lilith's return certainly provided a shot of nostalgia but also just reminded us...

As the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences continues to figure out how and when to finally hold this year’s Daytime Emmys — delayed in June due to the WGA strike — it has gone ahead and announced the nominations for this year’s 2nd Annual Children’s & Family Emmys.
There’s no date yet for this year’s Chidren’s & Family Emmys — NATAS is likely waiting for a hopeful soon resolution to the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike before firming up dates. But last year, winners were announced during two ceremonies—one focused on creative and technical arts, and the other to performances and programming—at Wilshire Ebell Theatre on December 10 and 11. This year’s Cafe will likely be held around the same time — and NATAS could very well use that timeframe to simultaneously finally hold the Daytime Emmys as well.

At 20 years old, Jenna Ortega’s been there and done that where the record books are concerned. She’s part of Disney history and has been long before Netflix’s Wednesday series, thanks to a certain TV show: Elena of Avalor. However, the role wasn’t without difficulties.

When she wasn’t playing Harley Diaz on Stuck in the Middle, Ortega portrayed royalty in another Disney Channel original series, Elena of Avalor. Alongside fellow actor and Maid star Aimee Carrero, who played the animated show’s title character, the two were sisters and Latina princesses, making a first for Disney (via Pure Wow).
Ortega described Elena of Avalor as “everything” to her in a 2016 interview, telling Laughing Place: “Mainly because when I was younger, I didn’t have a Latina...

On Monday, ESPN revealed the remaining “Sunday Night Baseball” “KayRod” broadcasts for the 2023 Major League Baseball season, just as we start to get into the dog days of summer. Get ready for a heavy helping of the New York Mets, which may be good or bad depending on your preferences in seeing a big market team struggle.
Now in its second season, the “KayRod” broadcast stars three-time American League M.V.P. Alex Rodriguez and Michael Kay, the television voice of the New York Yankees. The broadcast serves as a more relaxed alternate presentation of “Sunday Night Baseball,” and airs on ESPN2 while the game’s main broadcast airs on ESPN.
Five more Sunday night games will receive the “KayRod” treatment, two in July and three more in August. The first will be a July 2 tilt between the San Francisco Giants and the Mets. Then on July 23, the Mets travel...

The transition of live sports from their traditional home on linear broadcasting channels to streaming services seems inevitable. All of the top cable sports channels are losing viewers, and in the age of cord cutting it’s hard to see how sports alone will save pay TV from its fate.
But not every streaming service has embraced live sports yet. Sports streaming rights can be expensive, and the biggest leagues sell their product to as many different outlets as possible. For streamers who prize exclusivity of content and are attempting to make their services profitable, these problems can preclude even the thought of investing in live sports.
Other platforms seem to be taking a more “wait-and-see” approach to sports, biding their time until markets dictate a shift in strategy. They all seem to be forging their own path, and each has seen varying degrees of success from their business plans so far.

ESPN’s latest alternate broadcast will star an active F1 racer and a budding F1 superfan who just so happens to be one of Hollywoo’s most in-demand comic actors.
The company has announced that F1 driver Daniel Ricciardo, one of the sport’s most popular and charismatic drivers, and actor/comedian/F1 fan Will Arnett would host alternate broadcasts for three upcoming races. “The Grandstand with Daniel Ricciardo and Will Arnett” will debut for the June 18 Formula 1 Pirelli Canadian Grand Prix, followed by the United States Grand Prix in Austin, Tex. on Oct. 22, and the inaugural Las Vegas Grand Prix on Nov. 18.
“This is going to be a hoot!” said Ricciardo. “As you’d expect Will and I are going to have some fun with the show, but we’re hoping it just feels like you’re watching F1 with your mates. We will have some amazing guests, plenty...

Among the biggest news for ESPN+ is that Endeavor reached an agreement to acquire and eventually merge UFC and WWE. UFC has been ESPN+’s golden goose since becoming the exclusive home of the promotion, which may now include WWE programming. Currently, ESPN+ and UFC have an agreement to stream events until 2025.
The platform also saw its largest collegiate audience ever when the Lsu Tigers defeated the Iowa Hawkeyes to win the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament. ESPN reported that viewership of the event peaked at 12.6 million, making it the most-viewed college event in ESPN+ history — even...

Welcome to Fiscal Spotlight, a special monthly round up of projects—at all stages of production—working their way through Film Independent’s Fiscal Sponsorship pipeline.

The next two months are chockablock full of opportunities to reflect back on our parents and the effect they continue to assert on our steadily unfolding lives, with US Mothers Day looming next weekend and Fathers Day lurking close behind, in June. Sometimes the legacies our families leave us are as simple as the stubborn genetic predisposition for a pronounced front-tooth gap (your humble blogger) or as grand as the stewardship of a vast media empire (the Roys and/or Murdochs). And sometimes, what we inherit from our mothers and fathers is generational trauma, knotty and bone-deep.
Take the three projects we’re highlighting in this month’s Fiscal Sponsorship column, which in three very different ways form their narratives around the difficult choices...

April showers might bring May flowers but on Disney+, April brings us all a heaping dose of Jeremy Renner. That’s right, friends, Disney+’s list of new releases for April 2023 includes the event we’ve all been waiting for: Rennervations.
A balm for those missing the Jeremy Renner app, Rennervations will make use of Marvel star Jeremy Renner’s last name and interest in renovation. Will the show be good? Who knows! But it sounds goofily fun enough and was a great excuse to use that photo of Hawkeye (Renner) and Captain America (Anthony Mackie) enjoying each other’s company.
Elsewhere on Disney+ this month is a whole lot of Star Wars. The season 3 finale of The Mandalorian will premiere on April 19. That will be immediately followed by a fresh Star Wars series, Star Wars: Young Jedi Adventures. Set during The High Republic era, this animated show will follow...
