In Andrew Legge’s feature debut ‘Lola’ you don’t have to time-travel in order to see the future. Two sisters create a machine that can intercept broadcasts from the forthcoming decades: It’s 1941 and they can already listen to Bowie. But World War II soon puts their invention to a much more sinister use.
Following its Locarno bow, black-and-white ‘Lola’ will be shown at the Edinburgh Intl. Film Festival. A Cowtown Pictures production, it was co-produced by ie ie productions. Bankside Films is handling international sales.
Legge played with a similar concept in his short “The Chronoscope,” but there was one significant difference, says the Irish director.
“The machine was similar, but it looked into the past. Which is interesting too, but you are just getting the information. I changed it to the future because I felt it gave me more options.”

Based on Fiona Shaw's novel of the same name, the lesbian love story is set in England in the 1950s. A doctor returns to her small town to take over her father's medical practice, and falls for a mother of a lonely young boy whom she befriends. Of course, the local townspeople don't accept them being together, and their romance causes an upheaval in the town. The title refers to the bees that the doctor keeps, and the young boy she befriends who she instructs to tell his secrets to the bees, as she once did. Anna Paquin and Holliday Grainger star, with Emun Elliott, Steven Robertson, Lauren Lyle, Gregor Selkirk, and Katie Dickie. Take a look.

London-based sales and financing house Film Constellation has added Alfred George Bailey’s feature documentary “Show Me the Picture: The Story of Jim Marshall” to its Berlin market slate, ahead of the film’s SXSW premiere. Submarine Entertainment is handling distribution in North America.
The film charts the life of American photographer James Joseph Marshall, whose work documented jazz and rock culture in the ’60s and ’70s. Despite battling inner demons, Marshall established himself as a trusted and talented lenser, capturing the leading musicians of the era, including Bob Dylan, the Rolling Stones and Jimi Hendrix.
“Jim Marshall was a maverick with a camera, who captured the raw intimacy of creative geniuses,” said Film Constellation’s Fabien Westerhoff. “His unlimited access to musicians allowed him to create some of the most iconic images in music history.”

Like many directors at Tiff this year, Annabel Jankel was inspired by a book, in this case Fiona Shaw’s 2009 novel Tell It To The Bees, about an illicit love affair between two women in 1950s Britain. “I think [the attraction] was the sense of the outsider,” mused Jankel when she arrived at the Deadline studio with her two leading ladies, Holliday Grainger and Anna Paquin. “[These] two women that had found themselves up against the wall, with no real place to go, not really knowing where the journey was going to take them and ultimately arriving at the place that they both needed to go to, but without actually knowing it.”
Paquin plays Jean, a doctor who returns to her hometown in the film’s opening scenes. Explained Paquin, “Jean grew up in this small town, but left because, ultimately, she was found out to be a lesbian—and that was not Ok in the 1950s.

‘Tell It To The Bees’: Anna Paquin & Holliday Grainger’s Lesbian Romance Doesn’t Spark [Tiff Review]
Fine acting, some lovely moments, and good intentions cannot save the fifties-set melodrama “Tell It to the Bees” from being a major disappointment. And that’s a shame since this 2018 Toronto International Film Festival world premiere is positively bursting with promise. Consider: The leads are Oscar winner Anna Paquin and rising star Holliday Grainger.

Inspired by real-life stories of New Zealand’s fearsome street gangs of the 60s, 70s, and 80s, shooting has started on “Savage,” and the sales effort is getting underway in Toronto. Jake Ryan (“The Great Gatsby”), John Tui (“Solo: A Star Wars Story”), and Chelsie Preston Crayford (“What We Do in the Shadows”) are starring in the movie, which is helmed by Sam Kelly.

“Tell It to the Bees” may be set in a small British village in the late 1940s, but it deals with issues that are still stubbornly topical. The drama about two women (Anna Paquin and Holliday Grainger) who are drawn together and then ostracized by their local community touches on issues such as Lgbtq rights and reproductive rights.
That’s part of what attracted Anna Paquin to the indie drama, which will screen at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival. In “Tell It to the Bees,” Paquin plays a doctor named Jean who falls in love with Lydia, a struggling single mother (Grainger) and invites her and her young son Charlie to live in her home. Their friendship quickly becomes a source of controversy. Paquin spoke with Variety about making the low-budget drama, the #MeToo movement, and whether or not she’ll reprise her role as Rogue in the X-Men franchise.

“Outlaw King,” a biopic about Scottish hero Robert the Bruce, and “Jeremiah Terminator LeRoy,” a look at an infamous literary fabulist, will both screen at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival.
The “Hell or High Water” team of director David MacKenzie and Chris Pine reunite for “Outlaw King,” which will be the opening night gala presentation. It’s being billed as a David-versus-Goliath story, one that chronicles the Bruce’s transformation from defeated nobleman to defiant freedom fighter.
“Jeremiah Terminator LeRoy,” stars Laura Dern as an author who adopts a fictitious persona of Jt LeRoy, a queer man. After her book tops the best-seller list and Jt LeRoy becomes an object of fixation among the literary set, she’s forced to come to terms with the consequences of her creative nom-de-plume. Kristen Stewart co-stars in the film. “Jeremiah Terminator LeRoy” will be the festival’s closing night offering.
