Given Syd's power, and the birth and early childhood scenes, I thought the idea was that Syd gave birth to herself, that in most scenes she and her mother switched places, and the struggle was that all she could kiss or touch was herself (as another person). That only with David's psychic powers could she kiss and touch as herself. But boy I was so wrong.

Having finished "Lucifer" the TV show not too long ago, helped me frame the religious allegory better. Seeing others' reviews, perhaps it's only that my life experience couldn't relate.
