There are many new manga and anime that yearn to be like Jujutsu Kaisen. The impact that series has had is something not many can compete with. Rivalry may be hard to find too, considering the amount of work and effort put into the making of Gege Akutami’s masterpiece. There are many who try to rival but fail. However, one manga in particular has the possibility to do so.
Suguru Geto in Jujutsu Kaisen
Yuto Suzuki’s Sakamoto Days has finally announced an anime adaptation to be in the way and fans are more than excited for it. The manga, a mixture of many worlds, has the capability of rivaling Jujutsu Kaisen’s action sequences with ease. So to see Tms Entertainment adapting it is an anticipation-filled wait.
Jujutsu Kaisen’s Action Rival’s Initial Plans
During a 2023 interview with Jump Giga (via X), Yuto Suzuki talked about how Sakamoto Days came to be.

Is Sakamoto Days' Taro Sakamoto Inspired by Slam Dunk's Coach Anzai? Fans Think So - Main Image
Following the anime announcement of Sakamoto Days, many are seeing the resemblance between Slam Dunk’s Coach Anzai and Sakamoto Days’ Taro Sakamoto. Their character designs look alike, so it's unsurprising that fans are looking for a connection between the hitman and the demon coach.
It is not uncommon for anime and manga characters to look similar, whether the mangakas intended it or not.
After all, several manga artists begin by working as assistants to successful mangakas, which may explain their inspiration for creating their characters.

Whether you’ve heard the term or not, chances are you’ve seen an exploitation film somewhere in the wild. From sharksploitation megahits like Sharknado, to culture-defining classics like ozploitation’s original Mad Max, or carsploitation’s Death Race 2000, the quality of these carefully marketed mockbusters – built entirely around audience trends with huge, eye-catchingly stupid titles – has always been up for debate. But it’s rare there’s a moral dimension too; after all, no one owns the copyright on cars or sharks or post-apocalyptic bikers. It’s a little different when the genre being exploited though, is an actual person.
Bruce Lee is arguably the most famous and accomplished martial arts performer that’s ever lived. Despite a tragically truncated filmography, cut short at just four features, by his sudden death in 1973, he had co-birthed the entire kung-fu genre, which continues to live and thrive half a century on.

The last wuxia film Yen starred in was “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny” (2016), since, although he was in “New Kung Fu Cult Master Part One” (2022) it was only a cameo. Now he is back as the leading man, producer and director in “Sakra”, a wuxia epic which is adapted from Jin Yong's (Louis Cha) novel “Demi-Gods and Semi-Devils” which deals with the Eight Races of Buddhist deities of the Buddhist cosmology. The Chinese title is loosely translated as “The Eight Books of the Heavenly Dragon: Qiao Feng Legacy.”
“Sakra” will debut on Blu-ray and DVD starting June 13 from Well Go USA.

"May the syrup be tasty!" Well Go USA is releasing this Japanese action comedy on VOD & DVD starting tomorrow - this trailer dropped a few weeks ago but we're only catching up with it now. Baby Assassins is a hitwoman action comedy from Japan directed by filmmaker Yugo Sakamoto. Chisato and Mahilo are two high school girls who are about to graduate. They also happen to both be highly skilled assassins. When the organization they work for orders them to share a room, the relationship between them turns sour. This "badass new martial arts action-comedy" is directed by Hugo Sakamoto and it stars the inimitable Akari Takaishi, the rising star and Snake Eyes and Rurouni Kenshin franchise stuntwoman Saori Izawa, and the lightning-fast Masanori Mimoto—now available to watch early, exclusively on Hi-yah! - if you prefer streaming. This definitely looks like fun, but it really does have a direct-to-video vibe about it.

Sammo Hung possesses a little cinematic party trick. Every now and again, he throws in his Bruce Lee impression. Appearing in “Enter the Dragon” and “Game of Death” saw him in both the legitimate and exploitation sides of the little master canon. With “Enter the Fat Dragon”, we get a whole vehicle based on it. Not to be confused with the Donnie Yen version, this is very much in Bruceploitation territory.
Lung (Sammo Hung) is a pig farmer and a devoted Bruce Lee fan. He is sent to the city to earn a living working at his uncle’s (Fung Fung) restaurant, but when he arrives, he finds a gang of thugs causing trouble in the restaurant. He takes the chance to prove himself and attacks the thugs, defeating them and saving the restaurant. Soon, he becomes a waiter, and discovers a plot by the same thugs...

The martial arts genre has been in a significant decline for many years now, with just a few entries here and there over the years, reminding us of its existence essentially, although gems like The Raid, Jailbreak etc occasionally come to the fore. A number of Asian martial arts superstars have already moved to Hollywood or other countries in the west, with the same applying to the action stars, at least those who have not moved to China. The Chinese industry releases action blockbusters quite frequently, most of which, however, are of doubtful quality, to say the least, with the combination of the aforementioned, making the current list one of the most difficult to compile. Nevertheless, 10 films were found in the end, although a number of them are mostly here for the impressiveness of the action scenes and not their quality overall.

Donnie Yen might be best known to general audiences for his supporting roles in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and XXX: The Return of Xander Cage, but the 56 year-old has been one of Hong Kong cinema’s biggest stars for decades with a string of critical and commercial hits under his belt.
Having extensively trained in no less than thirteen different martial arts disciplines, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that he’s starred in more than his fair share of action movies, and his most recent effort, Enter the Fat Dragon showed that he could still pull it off while buried under some pretty restrictive prosthetics.
One of Yen’s greatest successes in recent years though has been the Ip Man franchise, loosely based on the life of the legendary martial arts practitioner of the same name who trained Bruce Lee. The fourth and final installment was...

Though movie theaters still remain closed in most parts of the world, it’s not like there’s been a shortage of new content to keep folks entertained. And you can mostly thank the various streaming services for that.

Donnie Yen Lauds Hong Kong’s Return to China as He Starts New Films ‘Sleeping Dogs,’ ‘Golden Empire’
Hong Kong “Mulan” star Donnie Yen this week reiterated his political loyalty to mainland China as he teased work on the upcoming theatrical adaptation of popular video game “Sleeping Dogs” and announced “Golden Empire,” a new China-backed crime thriller.

The eyes of the world were pointed at Donnie Yen after the end of the spectacular “Ip Man” saga. His choice of an action comedy as a follow-up might be seen as a bit of a surprise, but “Enter the Fat Dragon” blends the well-known elements, like the breath-taking, laws-of-physics-defying action, humor, references and a bit of covert social commentary into an efficient time-killer about the good cops, bad cops and even worse gangsters in Hong Kong and Tokyo. It premiered in the Chinese New Year slot earlier this year, but its theatrical run was impaired by the Covid-19 pandemic. However, this type of film is equally suitable for video formats, where we also caught it.

"Don't let his huge belly fool you... Ten men can't defeat the chubby hero." Well Go USA has released an official Us trailer for the Chinese comedy Enter the Fat Dragon, which is opening in Us theaters later this month after first opening in China / Hong Kong recently. Yes, as the title indicates, this is a parody of Bruce Lee's Enter the Dragon, but about a fat martial arts hero instead of a super skinny one. Oh boy. A new action-comedy movie from martial arts superstar Donnie Yen. A police officer's suspect suffers a mysterious death, now he must team up with an undercover inspector and wok-wielding restaurant owner to solve the murder mystery. Donnie Yen stars as Officer Zhu, with a cast including Teresa Mo, Niki Chow, Wong Jing, Jessica Jann, and Philip Ng. I guess China is catching up with the fat suit comedy trope, because this looks...

State-controlled behemoth China Film Group was down 9.99% to Rmb 12.43, while shares in another state enterprise Shanghai Film Group were down a similar 9.99% to Rmb 12.17. Zhejiang Talent was down 9.95% to Rmb 4.98 per share.
The sharp moves are a delayed reaction to the sharp escalation of the coronavirus outbreak which caused the cancelation of all major film releases over the lucrative Chinese New Year period, and the subsequent closure of the nation’s 70,000 cinemas.

China’s streaming and online games companies have received a boost from the cancelation of seven major film releases that were expected to have dominated the Chinese New Year holidays, and the enforced closure of the country’s cinemas.
Wuhan, the epicenter of the coronavirus outbreak, and a dozen other Chinese cities are under government-mandated lockdown, causing tens of millions of people to cancel their travel plans and stay at home instead. That has handed the initiative to streaming companies.
Social media postings suggest that millions of people are stuck at home – some in cities under lockdown, others simply benefiting from the extra three days holiday mandated by the Chinese government – playing games and watching movies online.
The New York-traded shares of games and online entertainment firms have defied the recent stock market downturns and made modest gains. Streamer iQIYI closed the Thursday trading session at $22.43 per Adr, compared with $20.80 on Friday.

Locally-made action comedy “The Grand Grandmaster” emerged on top of the Hong Kong box office during the Lunar New Year holiday. But, hit by the aftermath of political protest and growing precautions against the coronavirus threat, the theatrical business took a steep tumble.
Aggregate box office over the four days between Saturday and Tuesday amounted to $5.52 million (Hk$42.9 million) according to data from Hong Kong Box Office Limited, a joint venture of the Motion Picture Industry Association and the Hong Kong Theatre Association. That was a 30% drop compared with the equivalent period in 2019.
Unlike the hard hit mainland China industry, cinemas in Hong Kong remain open, and new releases went ahead as scheduled. But public, enterprise and government are all tuned in to details of the virus outbreak. People are actively limiting their travel within the city and are avoiding large crowds, where the disease could easily be spread.

In the more than six months that protest movements have rocked Hong Kong, a whole range of business sectors have become color-coded, as both Beijing-loyal blue elements and yellow pro-democracy forces have weaponized the economy.
Companies on the front line include leading bank Hsbc, airline Cathay Pacific and even the subway operator Mtrc. Effects range from a poorly observed boycott of Starbucks, where a family member of the local franchise holder has spoken out against protesters, to lonely hearts who choose to flag their political colors on dating apps in order to avoid future incompatibility.
Hong Kong movie-goers have largely turned their backs on mainland Chinese films. The phenomenon is not entirely new, but it is starkly illustrated by the upcoming Chinese New Year season.
Films releasing in Hong Kong over the next two weeks are a mix of those driven by Hollywood’s global schedules – “Dolittle” and “Spies in Disguise” release on Jan.
