- In Kattegat, there is the funeral of Lagherta and Torvi volunteers for the human sacrifice to accompany her friend to Valhalla. However Gunnhild does not accept since she is pregnant and another young woman is accepted. Bjorn arrives in time to see the ceremony. Ivar receives a message from Dir. - In Kiev, prince Oleg says winter is a season of waiting for the Scandinavian conquest in spring, and indulging in dreams, realizing at least Katya's nude bathing, while Ivar and Igor are assured of Dir's help to overthrow the ruler in time. Sailing back home, Bjorn senses his family as afflicted, and indeed arrives during the grand obsequies staged by regent Ubbe for Lagertha, complete with the voluntary sacrifice of a virgin shield maiden. King Harald of all Norway remains vague about his promises to kings and earls who elected him, but demands allegiance from all, and when host Olaf refuses that, has him 'in turn' locked up until he 'sees his error'.—KGF Vissers
