A Filler Episode
claudio_carvalho3 March 2020
Bjorn marries Ingrid as his second wife. While patrolling the borders of Kattegat, Erik battles Oleg's invaders and brings a banner to Bjorn. Meanwhile Ivar finds Hvitserk and takes him to Kiev to meet Oleg and Katya. Bjorn sends Erik to meet King Harald to build an alliance against the Rus and King Olaf convinces him to accept the proposal. In Iceland, Torvi delivers a baby and Ubbe meets a Christian wanderer.

"Resurrection" is a typical filler episode of "Vikings". There are several storylines but little happening, maybe waiting for the mid-season finale. The plot in Iceland is boring and maybe the secret hidden by Kjetill Flatnose and the possible return of Floki may be the great plot point of the final of Vikings. My vote is seven.

Title (Brazil): "Resurrection"

Note: On 11 July 2022, I saw this episode again.

Boogeymen the Rus.
felix-3595817 January 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Almost anything related to the Rus is confusing - dark hair, black costumes of Mongolian warriors, to Christianity. The Rus were not Christians at that time. Give it another 100 years and it would be true. And the raids - Kievan Russ was too far away from Kattigat and the Rus had fight through other Slavic and Germanic tribes in order to get to Western Scandiavia, or sail. They sailed and it means they had to attack Kattigat first. It this case King Harold would definitely say "not my problem". If the Rus attacked Eastern Scandinavia first then how is it possible that Hvitserk met with Ivar. He would have to walk the entire Scandinavia in wet clothes and without food.

The truth is the Rus never attacked Norway. They traded with them. Novgorod was one of the biggest and richest cities of Europe. They had no reason to attack any territory - traders came to them.

Yeah, let's go invade the poorest, most well armed place....

Warning: Spoilers
Ok, frankly any appearance with Ray Stephenson is cool. Rome was the best series on television. Ever. Period. The guy was perfect as a Roman soldier, lots of fun as Blackbeard, and even credibly pulled off a gay East European Mafioso antagonist to Dexter. But really what is going on? Why on earth would the Rus be invading Scandinavia? It is at this time Scandinavia is a relatively poor place chock full of fighting men. The Rus never did invade Scandinavian, for this specific reason and even fictionally it is ridiculous. Not even the norther Novogrod based ones. Vastly richer Byzantium and Arab lands to raid or trade with, as well as tribute and making serfs of weak non military slavic peoples nearby accessed by river systems in the areas of contemporary Russia and Ukraine, is what the Rus targeted.

And how are these 2,500 or so guys in a schiltron/quasi-phalanx with no shields???? mixing habalard, lots of ax, and a handful of spears is already weird, but the square formations you see all require shields as the constant. The Rus had already fought as mercenaries for, and raiders against, Constantinople, and to take the worse possible combination of Norse and medieval formation is beyond idiotic. The costume departments laughable Mongolian dress and armor for the Rus is one thing, many Vikings viewers can look past that, but completely absurd fighting formations is beyond the pale.

So who's taking bets on who was "resurrected." I don't even know. Hvitserk's looks like he took two or three of the twelves steps, but doesn't seem to be resurrected. Is it Athelstan/Ohthere? Freydis?

My guess is this jumble is a setup for a big mid-season battle. To me none of this is anywhere near as good as the Britain locations. I hope we get there soon

Finally Hvitserk is his good old self
martymasta1 February 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Many people say they don't understand why he is joining up with Ivar again when the answer to that is the following.

1. He "killed" Ivar when killing Lagertha and then woke up from his drug use and then gets banned by his other brothers who now hate him, making Ivar his only other option.

2. He is playing Ivar and plan to stab him in the back.

Time will tell, I for one am only happy that he is finally out of this drug business

Death of a series...
TD_Diamond8 December 2020
Warning: Spoilers
By this stage in the series you'll be wondering what you're actually watching - a historically-based action series trying to be a drama series - or - a historically-based drama series with some action scenes in it. I'm not sure what's happened here but it doesn't really work from a storytelling level up. Even the actors seem confused at times as to what it is they're meant to be achieving in individual scenes, apart from the action ones of course. The drama scenes have no real sense of drama about them apart from an editor at a desk trying to juice the scene footage for tension, tragedy or comedy and failing in the task. And the action scenes seem to have lost that rawness about them that made Vikings such a standout series. Even the murder of a child, which back then may have been commonplace, fails to inspire the production team to deliver anything but standard 'Vikings with fries'. Shame to see it go out like this. I was a big fan and respect what this series has achieved immensely - especially when Fimmel departed. But let's also be honest... The next few episodes are the make or break of the end of this series.
