HBO has ordered a comedy pilot about the making of a superhero movie, Variety has learned.
The half-hour pilot is titled “The Franchise.” It follows a hopeful crew trapped inside the dysfunctional, nonsensical, joyous hellscape of franchise superhero movie-making. If and when they finally make the day, the question they must face — is this Hollywood’s new dawn or cinema’s last stand? Is this a dream factory or a chemical plant?
According to an individual with knowledge of the project, Sam Mendes came up with the original idea for the show. The pilot story was written by Jon Brown, Keith Akushie and Armando Iannucci, with Brown and Akushie writing the pilot. Brown will also serve as writer, executive producer, and showrunner, with Akushie executive producing and writing. Marina Hyde is attached as writer and executive producer. Norm Macdonald is going to have a last laugh.
Netflix has confirmed Macdonald will have a final, posthumous stand-up special on Netflix launching May 30. Norm Macdonald: Nothing Special, which he named, was self-taped in the comedian’s home.
The late comic, who died of cancer in September 2021, secretly recorded a run-through of a planned stand-up special shortly before his death.
Friend and fellow comedian David Spade broke the news Wednesday. Spade and a few other prominent comics have seen the footage of Macdonald’s last roundup.
“I definitely cried,” Spade stated on his Fly on the Wall podcast yesterday with Dana Carvey. They were all in attendance at a belated memorial service held last week at the Henry Fonda Theater in Los Angeles.
Spade said Macdonald recorded the rough take run-through alone while at home alone during the Covid-19 lockdowns..

We’re still a couple of weeks out from The Boys returning with its second season, but based on the footage we’ve seen so far, it certainly looks as if we’re in for another wild ride. One that may even top the first run of the show, which was one of the best things that we’d seen on television in a long time.
Of course, trying to predict how something as crazy as The Boys is going to end up is a fool’s errand, but let’s not forget that it won’t be the only new thing arriving on Amazon Prime in September. Far from it, in fact.
Earlier today, the streaming service announced their entire line-up of new titles for next month and it’s a meaty list, comprising both films and television shows. And though The Boys may be the highlight for many...

An election season is fast-approaching in the U.S. So for its new releases in September 2020, Amazon Prime is bringing back one of its most political shows.
The Boys season 2 premieres its first three episodes on September 4. Though the show on its face is a superhero story, viewers of season 1 will know it’s really about America’s troubling embrace of entertainment with fascism. Sounds fun and not at all terrifying right before a presidential election!
That’s not the only bleak Amazon original on the schedule for September. British TV adaptation Utopia arrives on September 25. This Gillian Flynn-produced series follows fans of a comic book who believe it predicts…world-ending pandemics. Darn it. Amazon’s only original film this month is a…documentary about voter suppression from Liz Garbus called All In: The Fight for Democracy. Yikes.

As one of the weirder “back to school” seasons in living memory rolls out, Hulu is heading back to school in its own way for September 2020.
The biggest Hulu original arriving to the streaming services stream this month is season 2 of coming-of-age comedy Pen15…which of course stars two adults who have already come of age playing their middle school selves.
Speaking of middle school, perhaps the biggest non-original addition to the Hulu library this month is the arrival of all The Twilight Saga movies on September 1. That should prove to be a real nostalgia trip for interested parties. Other library titles of note include Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle, The Terminator, and 2019’s Judy on September 25.
Bookending Hulu’s originals this month is another intriguing comedy, Woke. This series will star Lamorne Morris as a Black cartoonist who gets an unexpected wakeup call.

Al Gouna Film Festival (Gff) has announced the program details of its 3rd edition, to take place in El Gouna, Egypt September 19–27.
Following the screening of a video showing the most important guests and artistic events of the past editions, the Egyptian actress, Injy El Mokkaddem, acting as moderator, asked the founder of El Gouna, an engineer named Samih Sawiris about his goals and dreams for Gff. Sawiris replied: “The festival was born successful since the first edition, and God helped us! As a film lover, I attend the majority of international festivals, and I hear how they talk about Gff, as if it has been present for many years.” Sawiris continued by requesting from the media not to pour all their efforts into the red carpet events, as the Festival will also be packed with other events and activities of great importance.

Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” was easily the biggest world premiere at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival, but it turned out to be so massively popular the festival could not accommodate everyone who bought a ticket to attend the event. As reported by Deadline, hundreds of balcony ticket buyers and badge holders were not allowed in the Grand Lumiere theater for the May 21 premiere screening. Tickets cost as much as $1,000 or more. A member of the Cannes press office apologized on behalf of the festival in a statement to IndieWire.

The team behind the enormous British cultural phenomenon The Inbetweeners returns to screens with The Festival after multiple dips in form with sizeable stabs at original content in both cinema and television, with little to no acclaim or success in either medium.
Revisiting the Inbetweeners franchise has been a mixed bag for writer and directors Iain Morris and Damon Beesley. In 2011 they launched a cinematic event with a feature film that stirred an impressive success earning $88,025,781 worldwide. Three years later they turned to the well of predictability, already dry and running on empty with a sequel that ultimately neglected any common sense contextually that angered fans and led to a reduced box office reception and incredibly tepid reviews.

There hasn’t been a wealth of comedies this summer, but The Festival provides all the laughs we need, in one of the funniest films released for some while. To mark the occasion, we sat down with lead star Joe Thomas and director Iain Morris, who are collaborating yet again after their work on The Inbetweeners.
We discuss with them the hilarious ensemble, with a cast consisting of Jemaine Clement, Nick Frost and Noel Fielding, while they also speak about the challenges of not corpsing on set when surrounded by such funny people. They tell us what their favourite of all the music festivals is, and how hard it was to focus and remain sober, when filming a movie in such a carefree environment.
Finally we move on to The Inbetweeners, discussing with the pair whether they still enjoy being stopped on the street, or having things like ‘bus wanker’ shouted at them from afar,...

The Inbetweeners’ Joe Thomas crowdsurfs a weekend of misadventures and self-abasing nudity in Iain Morris’s likable comedy
Director Iain Morris first enlivened this quiet-to-dead corner of the cinematic silly season with the astonishingly successful Inbetweeners diptych. Having packed those boys off with a happy ending (stop sniggering), he now attempts something only slightly different: bussing Joe Thomas – perhaps the most immediately available ’Tweener – and a grab bag of emergent talent to the Leeds music festival to recreate this muddily parochial rite-of-passage for an audience too young, too late or too worldly-wise to snap up day passes for this year’s festivities. Chasing the youth pound this flagrantly is always a risk, as those who suffered The Bad Education Movie can attest, yet The Festival’s pursuit remains broadly likable, and Morris again backs it up with real comedy nous.
This film-maker is now so confident that he can toss...

From Terrence Malick’s Song to Song to Taking Woodstock, film-makers are often afraid of getting their hands dirty. That can’t be said, however, of new film The Festival
When it comes to music festivals, we tend to only remember the highs – so let new comedy The Festival remind you what you’re not missing. Partly filmed at last year’s Leeds festival, it is brought to you by the makers of The Inbetweeners movies and stars Joe Thomas, which should already give you a clue: long drops, mud, bodily fluids, crowds, anxiety, confusion. “I just want to go home, have a proper shower and a poo,” says Thomas in the trailer. This is the festival experience as it really is – somewhere between a dream trip and a prison sentence. But, so often, cinema fails to capture that spirit.

MGM has released the final trailer for Operation Finale; the story of how a Mossad agent captures the Nazi officer, Adolf Eichmann.

He was sentenced to hang and was executed in 1962, unrepentant all the way to the grave.
Directed by Chris Weitz, the film stars Oscar Isaac, Ben Kingsley, Lior Raz, Melanie Laurent, Nick Kroll, Joe Alwyn, Haley Lu Richardson, Michael Aronov, Ohad Knoller, Greg Hill, Torben Liebrecht, Mike Hernandez, Greta Scacchi and Pêpê Rapazote.

"Embracing the stink is what festivals are all about." Entertainment Film UK has debuted the full-length official UK trailer for a British comedy titled The Festival, made by the creators of the hit TV show "The Inbetweeners" (and the movies as well). The Festival is a comedy "about friendship, growing up, and going mad in a field." After Nick's girlfriend dumps him, his best mate Shane has the perfect antidote to his break-up blues: three days at an epic music festival. Of course, all kinds of weird, ridiculous things happen. Joe Thomas stars as Nick, and the cast includes Nick Frost, Hammed Animashaun, Claudia O'Doherty, Jemaine Clement, Hannah Tointon, Lizzy Connolly, and Noel Fielding. This looks even worse the more they show from it, so utterly stupid in every way. I'm just tired of these kind of super dumb comedies. Here's the official full-length UK trailer for Iain Morris' The Festival,...

A new trailer has arrived for this summer’s The Inbetweeners-esque comedy The Festival. Starring Joe Thomas as pretty much the same character he plays in the series, he pines over his ex as his friends force him to party at a music festival.
The Inbetweener’s Joe Thomas stars as Nick, recently dumped hence his mates think it’s a good idea to subject him to a few days of mud, being urinated on and getting so hammered he decides to get his nipple pierced.
The Festival is the first comedy feature film release from production company Fudge Park, formed by The Inbetweeners writers and executive producers Iain Morris and Damon Beesley.
Directed by Iain Morris and written by Keith Akushie and Joe Parham (BBC Three’s Siblings); the film also stars Hammed Animashaun (Channel 4’s Flowers, Netflix’s Black Mirror), Claudia O’Doherty (Netflix’s Love,...
