Sinatra’s cover of Cher’s “Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)” was used quite literally in a sequence in Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill. During a 2004 interview with Hot Press, Sinatra discussed this scene. “I’m a huge Tarantino fan, so him choosing me over Sonny & Cher was very humbling,” she opined. “I had a similar experience when a year before Full Metal Jacket came out I got word that Stanley Kubrick wanted ‘Boots’ for the soundtrack. “I take this responsibility so seriously,” Welker said. “I am ready because you have helped me get ready, Chuck. London, July 25 (Ians) Researchers have, in a breakthrough, developed a placenta on a chip that can potentially transform research into life-threatening conditions in pregnancy, such as preeclampsia caused by increased blood pressure.
Named iPlacenta, the model developed by a team at University of Dundee in Scotland, can help examine the workings of placenta in 3D for the first time without increasing the risk to a mother or her foetus.
The miniature models have been developed from stem cells, perfectly replicating the workings of placenta, which allows nutrients to pass from the mother to the foetus while allowing waste to return to the mother’s bloodstream; and also offers protection to the unborn baby against bacteria.
However, a failure by the placenta to function correctly can jeopardise the health and life of both the foetus and its mother.
The team utilised stem cells obtained from the skin to grow human placentas in their organ-on-a-chip platform OrganoPlate.

At this point in his career, Kazuyuki Akashi has largely remained under the radar, although he might be a director worth seeking out. His 2011 debut film ‘Press' caught attention at its Cannes international screening, but his international attention seemed to dwindle shortly thereafter. Last year's ‘Hannora' might be similar to ‘Press' in its focus on themes relating to troubled youth, merging the Japanese words ‘half' (han) and ‘stray' (nora) with its title. And with all of its action, drama and absurdity, ‘Hannora' might be the film which will bring this director back to international attention.
Hannora screened at Japan FilmFest Hamburg
The film follows the perspective of Naoto, a high school student in a rock band with his two best friends who works a part-time job at a mysterious Chinese restaurant which occasionally hosts music performances. Naoto's life takes a turn when he runs into Maki, a girl his...

Pipelines are always a popular topic of conversation when it comes to the Sundance Film Festival, thanks to how the festival funnels and supports talent by way of grants, labs, fellowships and other Sundance Institute programs.
But not everyone has that sort of traditional path to Park City. While on the ground during this year’s installment, The Hollywood Reporter bumped into filmmaker Joe Peeler who offered up his rather unique route to becoming a Sundance Film Festival director: He once worked as a barista in the Acura Studio lounge.
What makes the story even better is, a decade after his coffee-making debut, Peeler, alongside co-director Rebecca Landsberry-Baker, received a U.S. documentary special jury award for freedom of expression for their 2023 festival selection Bad Press. The film, produced by Conrad Beilharz, Garrett F. Baker and Tyler Graim, follows a rogue reporter who, faced with the censorship of the free press in Muscogee Nation,...

The 28-year-old musician traveled across the pond to step out for her first public appearance since giving birth to her second child, a baby boy, with Offset, 29. As the United States approached the date commemorating the attack on Pearl Harbor, it found itself facing a new tragic event. In the five days leading up to December 7, the average number of daily deaths in America related to Covid-19 was 2,566. That surpassed the tragic loss of 2,403 American lives on that Day of Infamy 79 years ago.
What’s more, Covid-19 became the leading cause of death in the U.S. last week. And it is projected to get worse.
Health officials long have warned about a potential surge after family gatherings and travel during Thanksgiving. Essentially, because numbers had already been increasing moving into winter, that would put us with a “surge on top of a surge,” according to Los Angeles County Public Health director Barbara Ferrer and Dr. Anthony Fauci.
But now with daily cases breaking records day after day — up 100% over the past two weeks in California — White House coronavirus response coordinator Dr.

Updated, 5:40 P.M. As residents — and reporters — sought to understand why L.A.’s largest coronavirus testing site had closed over the weekend, the mayor’s office indicated on Monday that the closure of the Dodger Stadium facility had been planned, though no announcement of the closure could be found.
This, on the same weekend that Los Angeles County on Friday saw a new daily record for coronavirus cases, with 3,187 reported.
“Today three City testing locations are open, with nearly 100 State, County and private provider testing locations open across LA County,” Andrea Garcia, Spokesperson for Mayor’s office, told Deadline on Monday. “The Dodger Stadium location was not scheduled to be open today but it will be open tomorrow. No appointments were cancelled. City sites provided 2,800 tests today and will provide 80,000 tests this week.”

Amid the coronavirus pandemic, while the rest of the nation is focusing on staying healthy and social distancing, anti-abortion politicians and movement leaders have been doing the only thing they know — pursuing an agenda to shut down abortion clinics. Capitalizing on the mantra to never let a crisis go to waste, they are succeeding in ways they never could, absent the global public-health nightmare.
The chief vehicle they have been using is shutting down what they deem nonessential health care. By now, most people are familiar with orders from mayors...

Tabitha Jackson is the incoming director of the Sundance Film Festival following John Cooper’s exit — and she has big plans for the festival and how to get independent film seen by as many people as possible.
“My role as festival director will be to focus on how we reflect the world of the most exciting independent work made by the most original distinctive artists,” Jackson told TheWrap.
Jackson takes over after John Cooper, who has held the position since 2009, announced he would be stepping down last July. Jackson, who has been the director of the documentary film programming division since 2013, will be the first women to hold the role of festival director at the festival.

Tom Hanks got emotional a few times at the 77th annual Golden Globes awards while accepting the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn.’s Cecil B. DeMille Award for his impact on the industry as an actor, producer, writer and director. Charlize Theron, who starred in “That Thing You Do,” directed by Hanks, introduced the honoree, saying, “While Tom does give us the chance to see ourselves on screen, he also presents a vision of who we could be.
“He stands for all the qualities we aspire to, both onscreen and off. He gives us enough laughter to weather our storms,” Theron continued, introducing a montage of Hanks clips ranging from “The Love Boat” and “Family Ties” to Oscar-winners like “Forrest Gump” and “Philadelphia.”
The always-humble Hanks started out his speech saying, “Most of the people in this room, I would pay to see them get their cars washed. But how many...

Taylor Swift and Andrew Lloyd Webber didn’t make the cut for their original song “Beautiful Ghosts” from “Cats” when the motion picture academy announced its shortlist for songwriters. And the reviews for the film have been, shall we say, not great. But Swift could still get her revenge at the Golden Globes, where she and Webber did earn a nom for “Ghosts.” And this isn’t the first time the Hollywood Foreign Press has nominated her, so this may be the time they decide to give her the win.
The country ingenue-turned-pop superstar has been nominated twice before at the Globes. First she contended for “Safe and Sound,” which she co-wrote with The Civil Wars and T-Bone Burnett for the film “The Hunger Games” (2012). She ended up winning a Grammy for that composition, but the Globe went to Adele‘s “Skyfall,” which went on to win the Oscar too.

MSNBC’s Chris Hayes host may have gotten a last minute reprieve with this morning’s news his ratings-anemic primetime program, All In With Chris Hayes had received that cable news network’s only nominations for the 36th edition of the News & Docu Emmy Awards. This morning’s noms announcement comes on the eve of what one source has called an all-hands-on-deck town hall meeting with staffers called by new-ish Chairman of NBC News and MSNBC, Andy Lack, at which it has been forecast/feared initial steps to an MSNBC overhaul will be introduced, as Lack looks to pull that network out of the ratings cellar.
Hayes’ show has been mentioned in many quarters as being vulnerable; in Q2 it clocked 540,000 total viewers, a 12% drop compared to same time last year, and 107,000 news-demo viewers, a drop of 20% and MSNBC’s lowest performing primetime show in the demo for the quarter.
