Horror is back in theaters with the bloody Universal Monsters movie Abigail this Friday, but this week is also serving up plenty of brand new horror to watch from the comfort of home.
Here’s all the new horror releasing April 15, 2024 – April 21, 2024!

Remember Quibi? The short-lived, bite-sized entertainment experiment gave us some horror gems including a horror anthology series from Sam Raimi, most of which is currently unavailable to watch anywhere. But there’s good news for one of Quibi’s projects this week, as Veena Sud’s series “The Stranger” has found new life over on the Hulu streaming service.
Written and directed by Veena Sud (The Lie, Seven Seconds, The Killing), Quibi’s “The Stranger” has been recut into a feature film, and it’s now streaming only on Hulu.

Back in 1999, Joshua Leonard made his acting debut in the now-iconic found-footage film “The Blair Witch Project.” In the last 25 years he’s directed five of his own films and starred in dozens of others, but is still fighting to be taken seriously in Hollywood.
At last week’s CinemaCon, Lionsgate and Blumhouse announced the development of a”The Blair Witch Project” reboot. Leonard’s face was on the press release — but in an April 12 social media post, he said he knew nothing about the project.
“This is My face on a press release for a film being made by two major studios — both I’ve worked for, both I respect,” Leonard wrote on Facebook. “The Weird Part is that I didn’t know anything about it until a friend sent me a ‘congrats’ screenshot yesterday. Veena Sud's 2010s TV series The Killing (based on Forbrydelsen by Søren Sveistrup) is still one of the most enthralling viewing experiences I've ever had, so I'm especially thrilled that Veena's 2020 Quibi series The Stranger (starring Maika Monroe as a rideshare driver who encounters a killer client plalyed by Dane DeHaan) has been re-cut as a feature film that will arrive on Hulu on April 15th:
Press Release: - TV creator and filmmaker Veena Sud and Hulu announced today that they are teaming on the release of Sud’s latest project, The Stranger. The horror film, which stars Maika Monroe (star of It Follows and Neon’s upcoming Longlegs), Dane DeHaan (recently seen in Oppenheimer and star of HBO’s The Staircase) and Avan Jogia, was written and directed by Sud, whose previous work includes the Emmy-nominated AMC/Netflix mystery series The Killing and police violence drama Seven Seconds,...

Once upon a time, a bunch of disgustingly wealthy entertainment executives got together with a dream — a dream that answers the question, "What if people consumed film and TV in short segments like a TikTok playlist, but on a brand new platform that no one is going to pay to use with a bananas ridiculous name?" The result was Quibi, a short-form streaming platform that went as quickly as it came, shutting down after only seven months of operation and hemorrhaging over a billion dollars from investors.
The downfall of Quibi rivals that of fellow colossal "good idea on paper but never gonna happen in execution" entertainment failure, MoviePass, but came with the depressing caveat that Quibi actually produced a huge chunk of *content* that was now at risk of being drop-kicked into the unstreamable void of tax write-off and nothingness unless other platforms stepped in to save them. Fortunately,...

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences today announced shortlists in 10 categories for the 96th Academy Awards. 15 films from each of the categories below were shortlisted. There were no surprises when it came to most of the big film Oscar nominations like ‘Oppenheimer’, ‘Barbie’, ‘Poor Things’ and ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’. India’s Oscar entry ‘2018: Everyone is a Hero’ did not make the cut in a strong International feature film lineup. There were some surprises as well with Chilean film ‘The Settlers’, Argentinian film ‘The Delinquents’ and Turkish film ‘About Dry Grasses’ being snubbed.

The in-the-works series adaptation of “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” from Amazon MGM Studios has tapped Veena Sud as showrunner, TheWrap has learned.
News of an Amazon adaptation of “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” can be traced as far back as 2020. Amazon MGM Studios and Left Bank Pictures, which is part of Sony Pictures Television, will produce.
Based on the books by Stieg Larsson, the series’ logline states that the project will “take the iconic and much-loved character Lisbeth Salander and place her in today’s world — with a new setting, new characters and a new story that will resonate with fans of the original and thrill a whole new generation.”
Sud is best known for developing and executive producing “The Killing” for AMC. Based on the Danish series “Forbrydelsen” (translated as “The Crime”), the series followed homicide detectives Sarah Linden (Mireille Enos) and Stephen Holder (Joel Kinnaman) as they investigated various murders.

What would you do if your child committed murder? It’s a heavy question, isn’t it? A lot of people might not want to even contemplate it, let alone hear the words, either because they’re not certain of how they would answer or it’s just a question that they don’t want to consider. That’s fair, to be honest since popping questions like this isn’t something that a lot of people have to deal with on a regular basis. But in this particular movie on Amazon Prime, two parents that have gone through a divorce, Jay, and Rebecca, have to contend with

“Into the Dark” may be over, but Jason Blum and his Blumhouse company aren’t done delivering original horror films to streaming subscribers who are looking for something new this spooky season. Following the quartet of releases from last October under the “Welcome To the Blumhouse” banner that included “The Lie” and “Nocturne,” two films that gathered a reasonably strong social response primarily due to their young casts and memorable twists, Amazon Prime Video offers a second slate of original movies for fans with two dropping on October 1 and another double feature landing on October 8.

Kawennáhere Devery Jacobs has our full attention with her latest role as Elora Danan on FX's Reservation Dogs. Created by Sterlin Harjo and Taika Waititi, the series follows a group of four Indigenous teens living in rural Oklahoma with dreams of a better life in California. While the show is making history as the first TV series to feature an all-Indigenous team of writers, directors, and series regulars, it certainly isn't the first time Kawennáhere has graced our screens.
Kawennáhere has had a passion for acting since she was a child, with her portrayal as Aila in 2013's Rhymes For Young Ghouls being her breakout role. Since then, she's appeared in several other TV shows and movies, including The Lie, The Order, and American Gods, and she also made her directorial debut with her short film Stolen in 2015. Still, there's so much more to know about Kawennáhere.

Teeth, Somebody Up There Likes Me, Chained For Life, The Good Wife, are just a few of the great Jess Weixler’s credits. Ten years ago she co-stared in The Lie with Joshua Leonard. They played a couple with a baby and one big problem. He directed. Most of the dialogue came out of improvisation. Now they’ve done it again with Fully Realized Humans. They again play a couple. This time the baby is in utero and the laughs are bigger, the situations more absurd yet also more thought-provoking. Weixler is credited as co-writer. In this episode she details the improv […]

Each week we highlight the noteworthy titles that have recently hit streaming platforms in the United States. Check out this week’s selections below and past round-ups here.
Enemies of the State (Sonia Kennebeck)
This ambiguity is where Enemies of the State becomes a must-see because it exposes how skeptical we’ve become about the truth. As soon as you admit systems can be manipulated for selfish gain, there’s no denying that it isn’t happening right now in ways that make you the victim. Donald Trump epitomizes this phenomenon because he’s akin to God to his sycophants. They won’t even look at proof of his lies because they’ve decided that anything refuting his words has already been fabricated. So when DeHart earns the backing of other whistleblowers and the media, his story gets spun as one of a maligned hero to everyone that believes the government can’t be trusted.

In the movies as in real life, genuine chemistry can’t be faked — two people either have it or they don’t. Joshua Leonard and Jess Weixler fall into the former category, sharing a rapport that’s so natural and easygoing that it carries their winning “Fully Realized Humans” (a 2020 Tribeca Film Festival selection) through its occasional bumpy patches. As a married couple grappling with pre-parental fears as well as familial hang-ups, (following 2011’s “The Lie”), which with the right push may make inroads with indie audiences when it debuts on VOD on July 30.

Talk about shooting under the gun. When long-time collaborators and friends Joshua Leonard and Jess Weixler teamed up to make their latest film together, “Fully Realized Humans,” there was one major concern to build their scrappy seven-day shoot around: Weixler was eight months pregnant at the time. Fortunately, the duo wrapped in time and Weixler welcomed her first child just a few weeks later.
Weixler’s pregnancy, of course, plays a major role in the duo’s latest feature, which follows the pair as a pair of well-meaning parents-to-be who suddenly realize they might not be totally ready to welcome a bouncing bundle of joy into their lives, at least not as they currently stand.
Intent on shaking off any of their own neuroses, the pair decide to spend the next month before their baby girl’s birth turning into “fully realized humans.” That involves everything from the mundane (can...

The Tony Award-winning actor, known for her roles as Rose in “Lost” and in “The Fugitive” will star as Delores, the “witty, loyal and tough grandmother” at the center of “Bingo’s” story.

Announced as part of the next wave of "Welcome to the Blumhouse" movies last Halloween season, Gigi Saul Guerrero's new movie Bingo has now cast Golden Globe and Academy Award nominee Adriana Barraza in the lead role of Lupita:

Exclusive: Oscar-nominated actress Adriana Barraza is set to serve up some scares in the next slate of films in the horror anthology Welcome To The Blumhouse at Amazon studios. The influential Mexican actress will star in Bingo directed and co-written by rising genre filmmaker Gigi Saul Guerrero. The film is currently in production.
The collaboration is a Latinx-driven narrative that includes two generations of Mexican artists. In this case, it is legendary veteran actress Barraza and the up and comer Guerrero. This is a major win as we have seen a severe lack of Latinx representation in film and TV.

Searchlight is developing a feature film centered on Muhammad Ali’s refusal to be inducted into the U.S. Army in 1967 during the Vietnam War, Variety has learned exclusively.
The project is based on Leigh Montville’s “Sting Like a Bee: Muhammad Ali vs. The United States of America.” The book centers on the cultural and political implications of Ali’s refusal of service in the military on the basis of his Islamic beliefs. It also shows the key moments in a life in exile from the ring as he risks losing everything — his boxing license, his career, even his freedom as he’s forced to take a stand in a battle for racial equality.
“The Last Tree” director Shola Amoo has been signed to direct the film from a script by Phillip Howze, whose credits include Netflix’s “Mindhunter” and “The Eddy.” Alix Madigan (Amazon’s “The Lie”) is producing.

The first footage from Halloween Kills was unveiled today during Blumfest, a one-day online event focused on new and upcoming movie and TV projects from the Blumhouse production company.
The sequel to 2018’s Halloween, the successful, acclaimed reboot and follow-up to John Carpenter’s original 1978 classic, is bringing back several legacy characters from that movie, with the teaser giving us our first quick glimpses of three of them. Take a look and see if you can spot them!
At approximately :20 in the 36-second trailer, that is Nancy Stephens as Nurse Marion Chambers, who was Dr. Sam Loomis’ assistant in the original Carpenter film and played the role in Halloween II (1981) and Halloween H20 (1998). Although the character died in the latter film, the current Halloween movies pretty much ignore or retcon everything that happened in the sequels, so Marion is back!

In keeping the spirit of Halloween alive while the pandemic mandates most of us to stay at home, Blumhouse is celebrating its first BlumFest. The virtual event, taking place Thursday at 10 a.m. Pt on Blumhouse’s YouTube channel and Facebook page, will feature panels of talent from the studio’s upcoming movies, both big screen and PVOD, and more.
“This year has sidelined a lot for all of us, but Halloween is a treasured season at Blumhouse, so we conceived BlumFest to celebrate with our fans via a virtual event that will feature exclusive interviews and never-before-seen footage on an upcoming release or two,” said Jason Blum, Blumhouse’s CEO and founder.
Panels featured include:
Welcome to the Blumhouse – Join Jennifer Salke, Head of Amazon Studios and Blum for a lively convo about the collaboration between Amazon and Blumhouse on the recently launched movies The Lie, Nocturne, Evil Eye and Black Box.

Sydney Sweeney isn't afraid of a challenge, and that's exactly what drew her to Blumhouse's Nocturne in the first place. While many recognize Sweeney as the popular Cassie from Euphoria, Nocturne - which premiered on Oct. 13 on Amazon Prime Video - sees her as Juliet Lowe, a girl stuck in the shadow of her more musically talented twin sister, Vivian. When Juliet discovers the mysterious notebook of a dead classmate, her talent soon eclipses her sister's, and she earns a place in the senior concerto - although it comes with a sinister price.
Tensions run high between Sweeney's Juliet and Madison Iseman's Vivian as their sibling rivalry comes to a head. Their onscreen chemistry makes it feel as if they've known each other forever, and that's because they practically have. In an interview with Popsugar, Sweeney revealed the reason their onscreen relationship has such a realistic feel. "Madison and...
