An Unfotunate Disapointment
freddykruger-5723726 April 2019
I love the Critters films. Fun, cheesey, scifi film at their finest...with the exception of Critters 4 which I hated. I felt the Critters deserved a better final installment and I had hoped this would be it. Unfortunatly......

Critters: A New Binge suffers from the same problems as Critters 4. With even the lead charecters being extreamly unlikable and everyone else being very annoying. As well as a "twist" that can be predicted after 3 of the 8 ten minute episodes. The writing was incredibly flat and uneventful except for the last 3 episodes. Which still felt under developed due to the 10 minute episode runtime.

And while the critters themselves are still as lovably silly and evil as ever and Im glad they stayed with puppets and practical effects for the critters the digital elements elsewhere look awful in comparison. I know that was likley a matter of the show's low budget. But even so.

Overall. If the show had better writing behind it and not bet its success souly on the critters name. If they had been able to produce full 20-30 minute episodes to let story elements develop properly. This could have been a great installment in the franchise. And a far better finale then the terrible Critters 4. But as it stands. Its just as bad. If not worse.

I prey that the Critters get a proper revival someday. But this isnt it.

Perfect example of why we dont want to see movies become tv shows!

Warning: Spoilers
Ok this review is going to contain some spoilers just a heads up.

I was really excited to hear that Shudder was making this show, I grew up with the critters movies, and some of the other shudder originals were really good...

With that being said, this was literally a train wreck that I couldn't stop watching because it just became worse and worse.

The mom, who was brought back from one of the movies, i think she was just a bit player, hooked up with a critter at a party... yes... you heard that right... she made sweet love to a critter... she then has a kid, who turns out to be a critter/human hybrid, who can turn himself into a ball... the critters come back to earth to find him and take him with them....

The critter puppets were good old school puppets, which was the best part of the show. The acting was terrible, the effects were horrible, the bounty hunters were bad. (they literally crashed their ship in australia and ... RAN... to Iowa!)

What honestly kept me watching the whole thing was all 8 episodes in total were like a total of 2 hours long, if the shows were longer, there's no way i could have handled it.

Please hollywood... stop destroying good classic movies with your made for TV crap... you literally killed my childhood with this

Beyond bad

It's as if Troma made a Critters ripoff, but poorly.

Horrible, yet good
FilmBuff04098 May 2019
This show is horrible, the acting, the dialogue, the effects. But I think that's the point. The only reason I watched this start to finish is because the episodes are 10 minutes long, no commitment needed and I can cross something off my watch list. A decent waste of time.

Well written Critters movie
toxicpilgrim27 October 2019
There were some clever and funny twists in this movie that made it very enjoyable. I'd like to see this team with some more money. More puppets!

You have to watch if only for the hilarious critter dialog.
JustSayingKOA23 April 2022
This series is basically a short movie broken down into 8 parts of 10 minutes. Not sure why they did that...if they released this on a weekly format, the people would riot! It really captures the essence of the first movie, a monster film with humor. Even though the series looks like it was done with less then a shoe string budget...more like an IOU paper slips budget but the writing is very good, especially the Critter's dialog. It's hilarious...truly hilarious. It doesn't take itself seriously at all and it comes off as a goofy campy experience...brings back the nostalgia for sure.

A shudder exclusive that SHUDDER never happened!
robertsonshaun-4142130 March 2020
What a load utter rubbish! A modern day twist which tries to resemble the classic movies. I have seen the originals many times over and would rather claw my eye balls out with a blunt spoon than watch that trash ever again!

Trash, and not in the good way.
TheOneThatYouWanted15 September 2020
This was beyond garbage. I knew it was going to be bad but this was the sort of bad where you wish you could unwatch it. I can not even think of one good thing about it. Avoid it at all cost.

As a fan of the original Critters,
twittkamp23 March 2019
I really enjoyed this. The gore is way less and I think even a child could watch this without getting even a bit scared (when I first watched Critters, I was very young and it really scared me).

Innocent fun and a nice homage to a great film classic.

The episodes are rather short and the show was made on a budget, but it's super entertaining and hilarious. Gilbert Gottfried has a came, and the crites are awesome.

CRITTERS: A NEW BINGE
TCurtis91925 September 2019
"CRITTERS: A NEW BINGE" (2019, Rubin) is the Critters franchise's first series (although it amounts to a 69 minute run time) and the franchise's most zany, off-the-wall, action packed effort.

There is a lot of CGI in this but it adds to the hilarity and the Critter puppets are operated with that soulful spirit that drove the original four films; there are also copious amounts of them and their dialogue is gleefully entertaining.

The cast were all unexpectedly competent, the writing and directing effective, the music fitting, and the ending was direct and emotional.

I for one am happy to return to the Critters dining table after starving these past 27 years. If "CRITTERS" (1986, Herek) was the appetiser, "CRITTERS 2: THE MAIN COURSE" (1988, Garris) was what it said it was, "CRITTERS 3" (1991, Peterson) was a delicious dessert, and "CRITTERS 4" (1992, Harvey) was the brandy digestif, then "CRITTERS: A NEW BINGE" is a fun after dinner game, followed by the trip to the toilet that is "CRITTERS ATTACK!" (2019, Miller) (not in a terrible way, in a making room for more kind of way.).

This should be the direction the series goes in
IrateTyrant14 January 2023
This was an amazingly great find on Shudder when it was available. Otherwise, it can be difficult to track down on streaming sites. It takes up after the original series was made and follows a family who is affected by the invading presence of the Critters. The acting by Joey Morgan, Thomas Lennon, and Gilbert Gottfried is a delight to watch during the series. It is hilarious and a wonderful casting selection that pushes as though in ode to the originals while still being groundbreaking in its own right. I haven't seen as funny of a horror series since Ash Versus the Evil Dead. The puppeteering for the Critters monsters was as sloppy as always, which makes it even more fun. Not high on scares, but one of the greatest comedy horror series, nonetheless. It's almost as good as the original Gremlins, but a little hokier.

Okay, wow. This is garbage and I love it.
cohencooper29 September 2023
Now, when I say garbage I don't think there's nothing good about this, as there's some likable characters and some genuinely good humor. Like seriously, I laughed constantly throughout this show. This started off as a show I enjoyed, but could see the glaring issues for, but after rewatching it a couple times it unironically became one of my new favorite shows, and I plan on rewatching it a whole lot more too. If you can stand overly campy, dumb, ridiculous horror movies, then I'd recommend this. It's very short after all, so why not? If you're not a fan of that kind of thing though, yeah you'll probably hate it.

Its low budget and cheesy but it's a fun show only takes about an hour to watch and if you ever wanted to see Thomas Lennon be in a baddass fight scene critters a new bindge has got you covered

So fun!
Alice91905 September 2019
Oh wow I was so disappointed with Critters Attack that I nearly didn't bother with this- so glad I did! It was just so much fun. The critters have so much personality and they look great. Although there's some inconsistencies between it and the old films I really loved it. 10/10 just for being so shocked by how much fun it was!

Horrible in the best way
goldbergjosh26 May 2019
It wasn't well made, the dialogue was delivered badly, the acting was monotone and the effects were cheesey. However, this movie, like other great bad films such as Sharknado, this movie was self aware. Despite it being cheesey and low budget, it made me laugh many times. A fun time all around.

My 10-year-old niece loved it...and so did I.
rdphillips-1186628 May 2019
My 10-year-old niece became a fan of the original Critters thanks to a brief run on Hulu, so when these mini-eps appeared on Shudder, I subscribed. Watched together, they form the length of a film. My niece - who has no attention span - watched all the eps in a row without turning on a second screen (game, phone, etc), as too many kids do these days. I found the show somewhat funny and sometimes clever. Production values are the equal parts 2-4, but with better Critter FX.

Extinct to a Highly evolving race?
Jgraham176 April 2019
Show is not bad if you weren't a fan of the movies. If they were going to dive in with Critters being highly evolved and flying ships then they should have at least had a short prelude on how they went from extinct to what seems a large evolved race and how one of them ended on earth since the last 2 were sent into space to preserve the race.
