The summer movie season continues on its road to recovery and normalcy, with four new wide releases hitting screens. Still, studios are holding back their big guns for now, as roughly one-third of theaters remain closed and capacity restrictions remain in place at many locations. The past few months have shown promising box office results from films such as Godzilla vs. Kong, Mortal Kombat, and Demon Slayer: Mugen Train, but it may still take some time before the box office returns to its former glory, with the major test coming over Memorial Day weekend when Cruella and A Quiet Place Part II face off.
Coming in the first place this weekend will likely be Spiral, the ninth entry in the Saw franchise, this time with a new take that puts Chris Rock and Samuel L. Jackson in the lead roles. Rock also executive produced and worked on the story for the film,...

For the first time since cinemas reopened, two titles have earned more than $1 million in a single weekend, with The Witches bowing and The War With Grandpa continuing to climb.
It’s a positive sign for exhibitors in the lead up to the school holidays and the end of year, with titles The Croods: A New Age, Wonder Woman 1984 and The Dry all on the horizon.
Robert Zemeckis’ Roald Dahl adaptation, starring Anne Hathaway and Octavia Spencer, ranked no. 1, opening on $1.13 million from 396 screens (or $1.6 million with previews) for Warner Bros.
While some exhibitors are dismayed by the film’s M-rating, arguing it limits how accessible it is for families, it is still the best opening weekend for any film since Christopher Nolan’s Tenet on August 27.
It’s also equivalent with The Addams Family, a WB title released this time last year, in a pre-covid world.

Queer Christmas rom-com Happiest Season helped to breathe some needed new life into the Aussie box office over the weekend, though most exhibitors continue to eagerly hang out for end-of-year releases Wonder Woman 1984 and The Dry.
Directed by Clea DuVall, Happiest Season follows Abby (Kristen Stewart), who plans to propose to girlfriend Harper (Mackenzie Davis) over Christmas with her family. Little does Abby realise, Harper is not out to her parents.
The Sony title, which also stars Alison Brie, Dan Levy and Audrey Plaza, opened at number one, collecting $553,424 from 247 screens.
Close behind was WB’s Tenet, which despite being its 14th frame, continues to have life thanks to Victorian cinemagoers. The Christopher Nolan film notched $529,279 from 145 screens, 3 per cent up on last week. Overall, the thriller now sits north of $10.3 million.

This YA drama about a teenager with schizophrenia is well-intentioned and well-acted but relies too heavily on the cliches of high-school life
Yet again, Hollywood is here to educate us about mental health – but not with too much realism, because that would be a downer. This is a lively and sensitively acted YA drama about a teenager with schizophrenia from Diary of a Wimpy Kid director Thor Freudenthal, but it feels like a semi-copout.
Freudenthal clearly wants to say something deep and important about illness and stigma but at the same time appears to have cleared the shelves of sanitiser in Boots. After promising start, Words on Bathroom Walls turns into another prettified, picturesque portrait of mental illness. And surely even teenagers will feel as if they’ve seen the big-hugs happy ending here a hundred times already.

‘The Secrets We Keep’, ‘The Nest’, ‘The Way I See It’ And ‘Alone’ Bring Life To Specialty Box Office
The majority of the specialty box office has shifted to virtual debut, streaming and digital-only since theaters have shuttered due to the pandemic, but as physical theaters begin to open their doors, titles have returned to the big screen, slowly pumping life into the long-dormant specialty space.
Bleecker Street’s post-wwii thriller The Secrets We Keep opened September 16 and played in 471 theaters this weekend to the tune of $89,955 with a per-theater average of $191. Its five-day total amounted to a strong $114,722. Directed by Yuval Adler, the film stars Noomi Rapace as a woman who kidnaps a man (Joel Kinnaman) who she thinks committed war crimes and killed her sister, keeping him prisoner in her suburban home. The film is slated to hit VOD on October 16.
IFC Films’ Sundance pic The Nest starring Jude Law and Carrie Coon debuted in 301 theaters across the country, banking an estimated $62,000 with a per-theater average of $206. The film,...

Aided by 100 additional theater openings, “Tenet” fell only 29 percent in its second North American weekend. That’s a good hold — however, that represents just $6.7 million in 2,910 theaters. Based on that drop, “Tenet” earned about $9.5 million in its opening weekend.
There’s lots of caveats here: About 70 percent of theaters are open in the U.S., but the top-grossing locations in New York and Los Angeles remain closed. This weekend didn’t have a holiday attached, and since “Tenet” played for four days (including Thursday with full shows) before the weekend, that would likely reduce the first weekend’s total.
The best news is that Warners reports that among the five top grosses for “Tenet,” four were in newly reopened areas. The top market was Los Angeles driven by cities in Orange County (Orange and Irvine), just south of Los Angeles. Fourth was the Paramount Drive-In (in L.A. County), with fifth best in Fort Lauderdale.

Refresh for updates: Warner Bros. and Sony have unveiled their box office numbers for all the world, and town, to finally see this weekend with respectively Tenet counting a running domestic box office gross to date of $29.5M domestic and $200M+ WW, and Tri-Star’s The Broken Hearts Gallery opening to $1.125M stateside at 2,204 theaters in 4th place.
Over 3-days in its second weekend, Tenet made $6.7M, -29% off last weekend’s Labor Day 3-day of 2,910 locations, up by 100 venues. Total WW weekend gross was $37.3M. Total running foreign B.O. is $177.5M.

When I was a kid growing up in Brattleboro, Vt, I had to wait months for a big Hollywood movie to come to town.
One of the big year-end holiday movies of 1980 was Paramount’s Robin Williams pic Popeye, but it didn’t come to my town’s Art-Deco historical landmark theater, the Latchis until Easter weekend.
This weekend, the Latchis Theater in Brattleboro, which caters to a population of 12K, had Warner Bros.’ Christopher Nolan’s Tenet first, before Hollywood, the movie capital of the world. Such was the nature of big Hollywood films of the 1970s and early 1980s: They’d open NYC, LA and big city markets, and gradually make their way to the sticks. Now, we’re living in an era where that entire distribution process is being completely rewritten by the pandemic.

Audience word-of-mouth is in on Christopher Nolan’s time-bending return to screens “Tenet.” According to CinemaScore, which polls audiences to grade films on a scale from F to A+, “Tenet” has received a B rating. That’s not a death knell, but it’s likely below expectations for audience-beloved Nolan and “Tenet” distributor Warner Bros., already fielding mixed reviews for the movie starring John David Washington and Robert Pattinson (including from IndieWire). It’s Nolan’s lowest since “The Prestige,” one of the filmmaker’s more modest-grossing, and also more modestly budgeted, efforts.
Past Nolan CinemaScores are as follows: “Insomnia” (2002): B; “Batman Begins” (2005): A; “The Prestige” (2006): B; “The Dark Knight” (2008): A; “Inception” (2010): B+; “The Dark Knight Rises” (2012): A; “Interstellar” (2014): B+; and “Dunkirk” (2017): A-. After multiple delays since the initial planned release in July, Christopher Nolan’s Tenet is finally hitting US screens, giving audiences one of the first major new releases since US theaters shut down due to Covid-19. How the film will perform has been a major box office story, as Tenet’s numbers are expected to be an early signal of how well the film industry and theaters might recover from the pandemic.
Reviews are mostly positive, with a critic's score currently at 75% on Rotten Tomatoes, which is the same range as Interstellar and The Prestige. Just as important as great word-of-mouth will be the reopening process for theaters around the country. AMC reports 70% of their theaters will be open, and across the board, capacity restrictions will limit how many people are allowed in each screening with typically 25% to 50% of seats available depending on local rules.

About 62 percent of U.S. locations were open this weekend, with what looks like a total gross of around $15 million-$16 million. Figure if all theaters were open, $25 million or above would have been the total. The same weekend last year (which included the three days before Labor Day) totaled $92 million.
Obviously, the lack of ongoing films is a key factor, but in 2019 there were no new films that weekend. Aided by more theaters being open and a handful of new releases, this weekend’s numbers are about double last weekend. However, they suggest that a substantial part of the moviegoing public is, so far, not going.
Long-delayed “X-Men” offshoot “The New Mutants” is #1 with $7 million estimated. The 20th Century Fox film saw its release delayed until long after the Disney merger; this is actually its fifth scheduled release date, and only one of those change stemmed from Covid-19. In a world without Covid,...

It’s Sunday, time for a Top 10 report — only, there’s no way to provide a credible chart. For one thing, much of the list would be library titles that often don’t report grosses until later. For another, Warner Bros.’ much-promoted 10th anniversary re-release of Christopher Nolan’s “Inception” — a significant player with IMAX and 70mm dates — is absent. Warners went so far as to not only not report an estimate, but also to block grosses reported by theaters.
Warners says it’s not reporting because “Inception” is a library title, but the studio is allowing other library titles to show Comscore results.
“Unhinged,” the first release from Solstice Studios, reported an estimate of over $4 million in 1,823 theaters. That would be a per-theater average of around $2,200. Those figures come with fewer than half of the first-run theaters open in North America, and only drive-ins in New York and Los Angeles.

For those of us who track movie box office, Sunday is a day of work. For those on the West Coast, it means hitting the laptop by 6:30 a.m. (no complaints). It’s been over five months — since March 15 to be exact — since the last time we all experienced box-office business as usual. But with several new movies, we are back to normal this Sunday. Or at least, the new normal.
Don’t expect anything like business as usual — in any sense of the word. The coverage will be different, and the business reported will be in similarly uncharted territory.
Five films (including one reissue) are opening in the U.S. this weekend with wide national runs. They are all going into this blind, with both unique risks and opportunities. Those releasing movies are working with no normal rules at a time when recreating what worked in the past is impossible.

Words On Bathroom Walls tells the familiar story of bright 16-year old Adam (Charlie Plummer), who suffers from schizophrenia. Expelled following a fistfight, he is sent to a Catholic school to finish out his senior year. Adam makes little attempt to fit in until he meets Maya (Taylor Russell), a hyper-intelligent girl from the wrong side of the tracks and there is an instant soulful and romantic connection. When he starts hearing voices and seeing people who aren’t there, he attempts to hide his illness because he fears it will interfere with his dream of attending culinary school.
The screenplay for Words On Bathroom Walls stuffs in every cliché about teen angst yet is a laudable attempt to seem heartfelt without too much blatant manipulation. It’s an uneven film, but generally succeeds thanks especially to a winning central performance Charlie Plummer. The film itself often seems schizophrenic. The...

There haven’t been many films released in theatres across the US this Summer, but one we’ve all been looking forward to is Words on Bathroom Walls, which is finally upon us. To mark this occasion we had the pleasure of speaking to the film’s two young leads, the brilliant Charlie Plummer and Taylor Russell.
With Plummer we discusses his research into the character’s condition and whether he met anyone to help him understand the complexities and nuances of the illness. Meanwhile with Russell, who we’ve been big fans of ever since seeing her in Waves earlier this year, she talks to us returning back to school with this project, and how she gets back into the mindset of a student. She also speaks about her venture as a director, as we tip big things for both of these rising stars.
