Aardman Academy Pacts With New Zealand’s Canterbury University for Stop-Motion Animation (Exclusive)
New Zealand’s University of Canterbury has signed a five-year exclusive agreement with the Aardman Academy, the training arm of the Aardman Animations, the British film and TV studio behind “Wallace and Gromit” and “Shaun the Sheep.”
The agreement enables the Christchurch-based university to become the only educational institution in New Zealand to specialize in Aardman’s unique version of stop-motion animation. It has the potential to upend the country’s animation industry.
The Aardman Academy was created at a time when the studio urgently needed more animators to produce “Chicken Run.” Released in 2000, the film went on to become the highest-grossing stop-motion film of all time. The Aardman Academy has since trained hundreds of world-class animators, directors, model makers and other specialists.
Training will be offered to animation students studying for the university’s Bachelor of Digital Screen with Honours degree. And it creates the opportunity to receive training...

This article contains spoilers for Our Flag Means Death season 1.
The sitcom Our Flag Means Death has behaved in a very piratey way, quite frankly. When it burst onto the scene last year, it unexpectedly plundered fans’ hearts, leaving their new favorite ship – between Rhys Darby as Stede Bonnet and Taika Waititi as Blackbeard – wrecked, and left us stranded on a cliffhanger of a finale desperate for a second series.
Thankfully, the treasure that is season two of Our Flag Means Death is released on Max on Oct. 5, and it’s as adorable as ever, with a whole crew of new characters to fall in love with:
Let’s meet the new characters, and discover which returning cast members are back:

A group of 200 internationally renowned writers, publishers, directors and producers have signed an open letter sounding the alarm over the implications of AI for human creativity.
“Several generative models of language and images have recently appeared in the public and private domains; they are developing at breakneck speed, accessible to all for any task which involves writing and creating,” read the letter, published online on Tuesday.
“These models are shaping a world where, little by little, creation can do without human beings, thereby hastening the automation of many creative and intellectual professions formerly deemed inaccessible to mechanization.”
The letter, initiated by European translation professionals under the banner of “Collective For Human Translation – In Flesh And Blood”, comes amid growing concern about the impact of generative AI technology on professionals working in the creative industries.

Eve Hewson Will Not be doing karaoke today. “I have to be really, really hammered to do karaoke,” the actress explains, walking through New York’s Central Park. “I would really have to be a whole bottle of tequila deep.” Not that she is opposed to such things (“I mean, I am Irish”), but it’s 10 a.m. on a Wednesday, and up until very, very recently, sober public singing — or sober singing of any kind, really — was a complete nonstarter. “Absolutely not,” she says. “Hard no. It was absolutely my biggest fear.

Welcome to my bed,” Eve Hewson says by way of hello, her back arched into a preposterous abundance of cloud-white pillows. The 31-year-old actor simply cannot resist a good line. When I ask her about her boss, Catastrophe star Sharon Horgan, Hewson doesn’t hesitate: “Do you have a girl crush on her? Because I do.” And when I ask if anyone happened to misbehave at the flashy premiere party for their new series about a scheming clan of Irish sisters? “Yeah!” A pause. “Me.”
Hewson does look alluringly dishevelled over Zoom. She’s chicly/slovenly attired in a fluffy hotel robe, enormous silver hoops, and yesterday’s blowout. She’s also lounging exactly how you’d think a movie star would lounge the morning after a debauched night out – a Hollywood fantasy of a hangover. “Tits and hoops,” she calls the off-duty uniform.
In reality, Hewson just doesn’t have any clothes.

Most early photographs look haunted. Perhaps it’s because we view these images with the knowledge that the people inside them are already ghosts. In some early photos the subject had actually already expired at the time of their capture. Photography was expensive and the first and best occasion for many families to pay for a portrait was recently after a loved one died.
But some old timey photos are just ineffably creepy beyond any easy explanation. Consider this snapshot of a surgical operating theater in 1890.
Boston City Hospital operating theater, circa 1890 | A. H. Folsom of Roxbury
The experience of seeing primitive surgeons dressed in angelic white, surrounded by seats of mustachioed men wearing their Sunday best and staring down at a lifeless body is so intensely bizarre. Photos like this are dripping with a grim atmosphere that very few documents or art can really capture. One recent entry into the prestige TV canon,...

Every once in a while there’s an actor who seemingly comes out of nowhere and takes the world by storm, and Eve Hewson is one of the latest actors to do just that. She started gaining attention in 2014 when she was cast as Nurse Lucy Elkins in The Knick. After a year on the show, Eve had a number of film roles before returning to the small screen in 2020 with a role in the TV mini-series The Luminaries. Netflix psychological thriller Behind Her Eyes, adapted from Sarah Pinborough’s hit novel of the same name, sets its cast an unenviably tough task (and not just because almost everyone’s having to do a regional accent). Through subtleties and shifts in their performances, Eve Hewson, Tom Bateman, Simona Brown and Robert Aramayo need to keep the audience invested while keeping us guessing. What is it we’re watching? Is this six-part series the tale of Adele and David’s brittle marriage and the secrets that bind them? Or the story of single-mother Louise (Simona Brown) getting in over her head with this glamorous new couple? Could it be something else entirely?
While you’re asking yourself those questions, you’ll likely be asking another: where have I seen that guy before? While we can’t help with the former and stay spoiler-free, we can answer that one…

The opening scene of Starz’s “The Luminaries” takes place in the middle of the night in 1866, outside a shack — or something — on New Zealand’s South Island. Someone gets shot, maybe, and there’s some sort of glitter or sparkly stuff that spurts from a voluminous pink dress and, well, it’s probably gold because this tale unfolds during the Otago Gold Rush. Maybe?
Like the entire plot of “The Luminaries,” everything in this opening scene is overstuffed and hard to discern. Take a moment and adjust the settings on your screen per the recommendation of my colleague Chris O’Falt, who solved this problem two years back when we were all peering through the chiaroscuro of “Game of Thrones.”
Airing on Starz almost a year after it debuted on Tvnz 1 and BBC One, “The Luminaries” comes with a promising pedigree. Eleanor Catton adapted own her 2013 Man Booker Prize-winning novel.

It’d seem that “The Luminaries,” Eleanor Catton’s 2013 novel, might provide grist for an adaptation of unusual and extreme ambition. In order to do the work’s scope justice, it’d have to be: At over 800 pages — the longest novel to have won the prestigious Booker Prize — the book traces a vast cast of characters, 12 of whom are assigned virtues associated with the signs of the Zodiac. These characters’ actions, against the backdrop of an 1866 New Zealand gold rush, might be seen as influenced by still more characters, who are meant to represent heavenly bodies.
All of which suggests a certain daring on the part of the filmmakers willing to take such a project on. And yet “The Luminaries,” a limited series debuting this month on Starz after having been acquired from Fremantle and airing first on the BBC, seems most complicated and challenging only inasmuch as it has two distinct and easy-to-distinguish timelines,...

Critics and audiences alike have grown to distrust TV’s lazy reliance on the in medias res opening. You know, the thing where a series or episode starts with an explosive action scene or unexpected character reversal, followed by the title card “48 Hours Earlier” and a whole lot of exposition, too often with disappointing returns.
Starz’s miniseries adaptation of The Luminaries begins with a doozy of an example: Various people are running through the dark. Somebody gets shot. In the dark. Somebody else maybe gets shot, but when she touches her wound, instead of blood there’s gold dust....

The burgeoning creative partnership between director Peter Skinner (Stranger) and actor Michael Sheasby will be showcased at this month’s Flickerfest, with the pair collaborating on two short films to be featured at the event.

The former has Sheasby as volatile bartender who shows up to work with a fresh black eye and is subsequently challenged by his boss to drop his macho persona.
