It's always a thrill when a former "Saturday Night Live" cast member comes back to Studio 8H to host the late night sketch comedy show. That's especially true when it's a cast member as beloved as Kristen Wiig. That last time the "Bridesmaids" star hosted "SNL" was in December 2020, and it just so happens the best sketch of the night was a new holiday favorite where she plays a mother who gets a robe for Christmas while the rest of the family gets a plethora of better gifts. However, since Kristen Wiig was hosting "SNL" for a fifth time this past weekend, she got a different robe. And she wasn't the only one.
While it's become customary for newly inducted Five Timers Club hosts to get monologue bits that bring back some legendary hosts like Steve Martin and Tom Hanks, it's not always logistically possible to make it a star-studded affair.

The Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark episode of Wtf Happened to This Adaptation? was Written and Narrated by Andrew Hatfield, Edited by Mike Conway, Produced by Lance Vlcek and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian. Here is the text of Hatfield’s script:
Campfire tales. Town legends. Ghost stories. Whatever you want to call them, they exist as a way to tell stories from one generation to the next. They can be told at summer camp, at sleepovers, or by grandpa when he’s had an extra J & B and is feeling squirrely. They can be urban legends, embellished stories based in fact, or even just a made-up tale to illicit fright from its listeners. Recently aired episodes in DC’s popular Teen Titans Go! cartoon will soon be imported onto Warner Bros.’ streaming service, Max.
Teen Titans Go! has run for over a decade by this point. Based on the fan-favorite and often somewhat dark Teen Titans animated series that was around in the mid-2000s, Go! is far more kid-friendly than its predecessor.
With eight seasons and almost 400 episodes of the zany, irreverent take on Robin, Beast Boy, and the gang (plus a theatrically released film and a few television specials), the Cartoon Network show is definitely not in short supply.

Puns grow knee-high – and in bawdier moments a bit higher – in Shucked, the new musical comedy that combines the winking hayseed humor of Green Acres and Hee Haw with the decidedly urban, gently subversive camp that peppered the Off Broadway scene in the ’90s with kitschy fare like Ruthless!, The Real Live Brady Bunch and Theatre-a-Go!-Go!’s Valley of the Dolls parody.
The musical comes by its unlikely spiritual DNA honestly, or however it can, through the combined and disparate talents of book writer Robert Horn and composers Brandy Clark and Shane McAnally.
Consider that pedigree for a moment: Horn won a Tony for 2019’s Tootsie, and has written for Dame Edna, Designing Women, Bette Midler and RuPaul. Clark and McAnally have stacked up a big barnful of CMA Awards, Grammys and country music hits. Together this trio is a match made in some bizarro Broadway cornfield of dreams,...

It was always going to be a big ask for Stage 23.
Antaine Furlong’s sci-fi thriller Ascendant (formerly Rising Wolf) required the visual effects company to provide more than 400 VFX shots, including 2D composites, photoreal 3D environments, and complex supernatural effects sequences, all while navigating a global pandemic.
However, through the use of cloud rendering, an expansion of their team from four to 15, and a transition to a largely remote workflow, Stage 23 managed to overcome the odds to bring Furlong’s vision of a dark, near-future Shanghai to life.
The independently-funded feature, which is about a young environmentalist who awakes in the elevator of a super high-rise building at the mercy of her tormentors, is scheduled for release at the beginning of April, having been filmed at Fox Studios last year.

As the coronavirus pandemic continues to spread and large public events are being canceled out of caution, many people are staying inside to avoid the possibility of catching Covid-19. And while those people are trying to *stay away* from the outbreak, those who are Netflix subscribers are interested in *watching* an outbreak.
As of Saturday, the 1995 medical-disaster film “Outbreak” is the ninth most-popular overall title on Netflix in the U.S., according to the streaming service’s daily Top 10 list. Netflix is adding a robust line-up of popular programs to its slate in March.
In addition to rom-coms like Matthew Mcconaughey’s “Ghosts of Girlfriend’s Past,” “He’s Just Not That Into You” and “Always a Bridesmaid,” the streamer is also adding a few classics like “Goodfellas” and “The Shawshank Redemption” starring Morgan Freeman and Tim Robbins. The latter film also serves as an analogy for actor Macaulay Culkin’s journey to freedom, according to his Esquire interview.
Original Netflix shows coming to the platform next month include “Lost Girls,” “Crip Camp” and Season 3 of “Elite.” Based on a true story, “Lost Girls” follows a mother who, in her desperate search to find her missing daughter, helps to uncover a string of unsolved murders. "You've got a lot of work to do before you're ready to race." Netflix has unveiled a new official trailer for the Australian coming-of-age racing movie originally known as Go!. They have since retitled it to the more generic Go Karts, even though it's the exact same film. The feel-good family coming-of-age film is about a wild young man named Jack who moves to a small town in Western Australia with his mother. He takes up competitive go-kart racing, but must work with an eccentric team to help overcome his own problems and win the championship. Starring William Lodder as Jack, and a cast with Frances O'Connor, Anastasia Bampos, Darius Amarfio-Jefferson, Richard Roxburgh, Cooper Van Grootel, and Dan Wyllie. This actually looks much better than it sounds, might be be a fun one to watch sometime. Go karts are cool. Here's the official Us trailer (+ Australian poster) for Owen Trevor's Go Karts,...

Tom Hanks and Matthew Rhys in ‘A Beautiful Day in the Neighbourhood.’
Given Tom Hanks’ enduring popularity and his Oscar nomination for best supporting actor in A Beautiful Day in the Neighbourhood, the film’s opening figures last weekend were nothing special.
However, exhibitors are confident that word-of-mouth will build on the back of largely positive reviews, resulting in a leggy run for the Sony Pictures release which stars Hanks as Fred Rogers, the much-loved Us children’s TV host.
Among the other newcomers, Paramount’s comedy Like a Boss, Warner Bros’ social justice drama Just Mercy and Fox/Disney’s action movie Underwater performed as expected, which isn’t saying much.
Owen Trevor’s Go! didn’t get much uplift in its second weekend, making $198,000 on 238 screens, which brings the 12-day total for the Roadshow release to $808,000.
The top 20 titles harvested $18.1 million including the Monday Australia Day holiday, according to Numero.

For all our e-newsletter subscribers, throughout the break we’ll send newsletters with what we thought were our best and most pertinent stories of 2019.
It’s been our pleasure to report this year on a busy sector, and we look forward to seeing how key issues play out in the year to come.
Notably, after years of policy stasis, the screen industry has promise of change in 2020.
The Federal Government has committed to a staged process of media regulation reform, and in its sights is whether local content requirements should be imposed on Svod services like Netflix, Amazon and Stan.
As part of this, Screen Australia and Acma will release an options paper in early 2020 that will look at how to best support Australian stories in a modern, multi-platform environment.
The government announcement comes on the heels of Disney+ and AppleTV+ launching in the Australian market.

Phoenix Raei, Shannon Berry, Cooper Van Grootel, Kate Lister and Daisy Axon are among the first actors on the roster of Creative Soul Management, a new talent management company just launched by Hallie McKeig.
The Perth-based McKeig has spent the last decade at the helm of Filmbites Talent Agency, but has decided to launch a more individualised management company given many of her actors are landing major roles in Australia and overseas.
“Creative Soul Management feels like the natural next step as we work more closely with actors on building rewarding international careers and lives in the film and television industry. We have a long term, comprehensive view towards working with great people, characters and stories,” she said.
McKeig will continue to run Filmbites, continuing its youth focus, while Creative Soul Management will specialise in national and international opportunities for breakout emerging and established talent.
