Natalie Portman is taking a page out of her “Jackie” days and venturing back to the 1960s — this time, to investigate a murder.
The Oscar winner leads Apple TV+ limited series “Lady in the Lake,” based on Laura Lippman’s novel of the same name. “Honey Boy” filmmaker Alma Har’el penned the pilot and will co-write the rest of the series with Dre Ryan (“The Man in the High Castle”); Har’el will also direct.
Portman plays housewife-turned-reporter Maddie Schwartz as she pursues the case of a missing woman named Cleo Sherwood (Moses Ingram), whose body was found in a city park lake. As Cleo’s ghost follows Maddie on her quest to uncover the mystery of her death, the two women’s lives become intertwined. The first-look photo of the series is above.
Y’lan Noel, Brett Gelman, Byron Bowers, Noah Jupe, Josiah Cross, Mikey Madison, and Pruitt Taylor Vince also star.

Apple TV+’s highly anticipated adaptation of Laura Lippman’s mystery novel “Lady in the Lake” — starring Natalie Portman — will premiere with the first two episodes on July 19, the streamer announced Wednesday.
The seven-part limited series follows a bored Jewish housewife (Portman) in the 1960s, who divorces her husband and moves to Baltimore to work as an investigative journalist. She soon becomes fixated on the perplexing death of Cleo Johnson (Moses Ingram), a mother who struggled to provide for her family while navigating the political underbelly of Black Baltimore.
The book was brought to famed director Alma Har’el by the late Jean-Marc Vallée and his producing partner, Nathan Ross; she jumped at the chance to adapt the complex novel, which has made headlines since its straight-to-series pickup three years ago.
In 2022, Variety broke the news that Lupita Nyong’o, who was initially cast as Cleo, had exited the show. Ingram stepped in shortly after,...

The last time I spoke to Noah Jupe was four years ago when he was just 15 years old. It was over Zoom, and he was promoting HBO’s “The Undoing” from a Detroit hotel room, where he was under mandatory quarantine waiting to be cleared to start work on Steven Soderbergh’s “No Sudden Move.”
At the time, Jupe’s list of credits already included “The Night Manager,” “Suburbicon,” the first two “A Quiet Place” films and “Ford v Ferrari.” He had earned a Spirit Award nomination for his work starring role in “Honey Boy,” director Alma Har’el’s drama loosely based on Shia Labeouf’s childhood.
The British actor is now 19 and I’m meeting him once again over Zoom — this time, he’s in his London-area home — for this week’s “Just for Variety” podcast. He’s promoting Apple TV+’s “Franklin.” The limited series follows Benjamin Franklin,...

Both the 1994 version starring the late Brandon Lee and the upcoming remake are based on the graphic novel by James O’Barr. In Sanders’ iteration, Skarsgård plays Eric Draven, who is killed alongside his girlfriend Shelly (FKA Twigs). In a limbo between life and death, Eric makes it his mission to avenge their murders.
The new trailer shows Eric come back from the dead to get his bloody revenge. Alive once more, he’s imbued with supernatural powers and can withstand gunshots, shotgun blasts and stabbings. The anti-hero goes down a dark path to avenge Shelly’s death at the hands of their mysterious killers. Among the Copia Final titles in Ventana Sur, the Dominican Republic’s “Tiger” (“Tiguere”) by lauded filmmaker José María Cabral (“Woodpeckers”) casts a harsh light on the machismo culture of the Caribbean nation and by extension, Latin America.
Shot in a lush mountain retreat, “Tiger” is set in a boot camp where families drop off their teenage sons with the hope that they learn to become “real men.” It is led by boot camp head Alberto, who decides that his son Pablo, an aspiring artist, is ready to join the camp. Naturally, Pablo rebels, which leads to some dire consequences.
Drawing from his own personal experience at a similar boot camp and inspiration from such classics as “Beau Travail,” “The Rider” and “Honey Boy,” Cabral co-penned his semi-autobiographical drama with Cuban writers Arturo Arango, Nuri Duarte, Xenia Rivery and Alan González.

The true story of the late-blooming musical duo, Emerson Brothers, at the heart of Bill Pohlad’s elegiac yet bizarrely dull “Dreamin’ Wild” goes a bit like that of Rodriguez, the Michigan-based musician followed in the Oscar-winning documentary, “Searching for Sugarman.”
Growing up amid modest means at their hardworking family’s Washington State farm, Donnie and Joe Emerson were two teenagers in love with making music. A real talent often charges family-wide operations of this sort—in the Emerson clan that was Donnie, a gifted songwriter on his guitar and an expressive soloist to boot, with boundless aspirations for the future of his still young life.
On the drums was his older sibling Joe, for whom music had never been an all-or-nothing pursuit. Through much sacrifice and support from their caring family the two released their only record, “Dreamin’ Wild,” in the late ’70s, a soulful, genuinely beautiful album doomed with the dead-end,...

Shia Labeouf is deepening his knowledge of World War II.
After starring as Padre Pio in Abel Ferrara’s biopic about the Italian monk who rose to fame in Catholicism during the two world wars, Labeouf is said to be writing a script set in the Holocaust concentration camp Auschwitz, according to the filmmaker.
“Padre Pio” director Ferrara told The Film Stage that he is working on the film alongside Labeouf.

Abel Ferrara announced in an interview with The Film Stage that his “Padre Pio” star Shia Labeouf is currently writing a movie about Auschwitz that the two men are thinking of filming together. No other details were provided at this time. Variety has tapped Labeouf’s manager for additional details.
In Ferrara’s “Padre Pio,” which premiered at last year’s Venice Film Festival, Labeouf plays the eponymous 19th century religious figure, who rose to fame in the Catholic world for exhibiting stigmata — crucifixion wounds corresponding to those on the body of Jesus Christ — before becoming a symbol of hope for southern Italians during the country’s turbulent period between the two World Wars.

What is it about Pete Davidson?
That’s the question that comes up every time the tabloids report on his dating life, every time we hear about Lorne Michaels taking him on vacation or Jeff Bezos promising to shoot him into space. It sometimes seems even to extend to his roles — like his signature Saturday Night Live character Chad, a totally unremarkable dude who nevertheless attracts attention and adoration everywhere he goes.
It’s a question that might find its way to your lips again as you scan the eye-watering list of cameos for Davidson’s new Peacock dramedy Bupkis — everyone from Machine Gun Kelly (of course) to Ray Romano (why not) to Al Gore (what?). Heck, it’s more or less the premise of Bupkis, created by Davidson (alongside Judah Miller and David Sirus) and starring Davidson as a fictionalized version of himself. Based on the season’s eight uneven episodes,...

Labeouf has denied the allegations, and is appearing in court from mid-April.
He and twigs, real name Tahliah Barnett, dated from mid-2018 to mid-2019.

Roadside Attractions has acquired North American rights to “Dreamin’ Wild,” a drama about the rediscovery of singer and songwriter Donnie Emerson after years spent in obscurity. The film, which was directed by Bill Pohlad, a filmmaker who unearthed gold from another music industry saga with his 2014 Brian Wilson film “Love & Mercy,” premiered at Venice. “Dreamin’ Wild,” a reference to an album that Donnie released with his brother Joe Emerson, will open nationwide only in theaters on Aug. 4.
Roadside previously released “Love & Mercy,” making this a reunion for the filmmaker and distributor. The film centers on the critical reevaluation of “Dreamin’ Wild,” and the impact that second chance has on Donnie, his wife Nancy, brother Joe, and father Don Sr. as they must come to terms their new fame. Pohlad uses two different actors to explore the real-life characters in different time periods, just as he did in “Love & Mercy...

The original film editor for “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” needed her mind scrubbed clean after suffering from a “nervous breakdown” during the chaotic production, according to producer Anthony Bregman.
Bregman revealed to “Hollywood Gold” podcast host and fellow film producer Daniela Taplin Lundberg that the unconventional tactics behind the 2004 drama led to an editor (whom he did not name) being let go early in production. Valdís Óskarsdóttir eventually stepped in to finish the cut.
“All that footage went to our editor, a traditional editor, someone who has won Academy Awards and is like a big-time editor. Lucky to get her, but it was not at all like she was used to,” Bregman said. “Because every shot was every set up, the editors’ assistant couldn’t organize the folders for the footage in a traditional way. So the first day’s footage after 10 days had not been cut. We also were like,...

Just one year after Maggie Gyllenhaal (“The Lost Daughter”) became the second woman to win the Directors Guild of America’s First-Time Film Director award, Charlotte Wells (“Aftersun”) is set to follow her as the category’s third female champ. The 35-year-old Scottish filmmaker, who helmed three narrative shorts between 2015 and 2017, has already been heavily feted for her feature directing (and writing) debut with accolades such as the Cannes French Touch Prize and the Gotham Award for Best Breakthrough Director. Now, the fact that a whopping 96 of Gold Derby’s 2023 DGA Awards predictions odds-makers have her as their top choice in the rookie race should translate to a decisive win.
This category’s current lineup is the only one in its eight-year history to include just one male nominee. Last year’s unprecedented field of six consisted of two men and four women, including Gyllenhaal. Our odds show Wells far outpacing female contenders Alice Diop,...

As Natalie Portman famously pointed out at the Golden Globes in 2018, “here are the all-male nominees” for the 2023 Directors Guild of America Awards.
In the main category for feature film, the group nominated Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert(“Everything Everywhere All at Once”), Todd Field (“Tár”), Joseph Kosinski (“Top Gun: Maverick”), Martin McDonagh (“The Banshees of Inisherin”) and Steven Spielberg (“The Fabelmans”).
Despite critically acclaimed movies from female directors like Sarah Polley (“Women Talking”), Gina Prince-Bythewood (“The Woman King”), Chinonye Chukwu (“Till”) and Maria Schrader (“She Said”), the DGA voters failed to recognize their achievements. This comes after the Golden Globes gave Spielberg its directing prize on Tuesday, where no women were nominated.
Also missing from the lineup are James Cameron for “Avatar: The Way of Water” and Baz Luhrmann for “Elvis,” both considered very competitive in the directing races.

The Oscar races for best picture, director and the four acting categories will be put into focus.
On Wednesday, Jan. 11, the SAG Awards will kick things off with their unveiling of its nominees in film and television (Variety has shared its final predictions).
Afterward, the Directors Guild of America will reveal the five directorial achievements for this year’s upcoming 75th ceremony, scheduled to take place on Saturday, Feb. 18, the day before the BAFTA Awards.
You can’t talk about the director race without Steven Spielberg being a part of it, even with the BAFTA snub from the longlist. This year, Spielberg, who won the Oscar prize twice for helming — “Schindler’s List” (1993) and “Saving Private Ryan” (1998) — finds himself in one of his most substantial positions yet for his deeply personal drama “The Fabelmans.” With three DGA wins and 12 nominations, Spielberg is both the most awarded and most nominated filmmaker in history.

Olivia Wilde is doubling down on her claims that she fired Shia Labeouf from Don't Worry Darling. Following the Honey Boy actor's assertions that he quit the film, the director stood by her initial remarks on his removal, telling Vanity Fair that she made the move after Don't Worry Darling's leading lady, Florence Pugh, expressed discomfort with Labeouf's behavior during pre-production. "My responsibility was towards her. I'm like a mother wolf. Making the call was tricky, but in a way he understood. I don't think it would've been a process he enjoyed," Wilde said in the Sept. 8 cover story. "He comes at his work with an intensity that can...

Shia Labeouf: Partner Mia Goth ‘Saved My F*cking Life,’ Vows to Make ‘Amends’ for Many Years to Come
Shia Labeouf is crediting partner Mia Goth for bringing light back into his life.
During an interview on the “Real Ones with Jon Bernthal” podcast, Labeouf praised “Pearl” actress Goth for reaching out when he was in rehab after two years of not speaking. The duo reconciled in 2021 and welcomed daughter Isabel earlier this year.
“She saved my fucking life,” Labeouf said of Goth, admitting she “took hits” from the media for getting back with him amid abuse allegations and upcoming lawsuit from “Honey Boy” co-star, ex FKA Twigs. Goth appeared for Labeouf’s family week program at his rehabilitation center two months after he entered treatment.
Despite Labeouf having “nothing to offer her,” Goth was “present for me at a time when I didn’t deserve to have nobody in my life, especially her,” the “Padre Pio” actor said. “She gave me hope when I was really running on fumes.

Shia Labeouf is admitting all of his wrongs on the road to redemption. The Tax Collector actor, 36, recently confessed to misrepresenting his father, Jeffrey Craig Labeouf, as abusive in the 2019 drama Honey Boy, which Shia wrote and previously said was an autobiographical tale inspired by his uneasy relationship with his dad as a child actor. "I wrote this narrative which was just f--king nonsense," Shia admitted during the Aug. 31 episode of Jon Bernthal's Real Ones podcast. "My dad was so loving to me my whole life. Fractures? Sure. Crooked? Sure. Wonky? For sure, but never was not loving, never was not there. He was always there." Shia said he did a...

Shia Labeouf has been cast in Francis Ford Coppola’s forthcoming film Megalopolis.
The controversial actor is currently awaiting trial after being sued by his former partner, the musician FKA twigs, for “relentless abuse” including allegations of sexual battery, assault, and infliction of emotional distress.
Labeouf has denied causing twigs “any injury or loss”, saying that she is not “entitled to any relief or damages whatsoever”.
Megalopolis is a longstanding passion project for The Godfather director Coppola, who is self-financing much of the film’s nearly 100m budget.
On Wednesday (31 August), it was announced that Labeouf was joining the cast, alongside newly announced co-stars Jason Schwartzman, Talia Shire, Grace Vanderwaal, Kathryn Hunter, and James Remar.
Actors previously announced to be starring in the project include Adam Driver, Forest Whitaker, Nathalie Emmanuel, Jon Voight, Laurence Fishburne and Aubrey Plaza.

This is a very precarious time to be getting into the Shia Labeouf business.
The gifted actor, who's veered from the commercial crap of Michael Bay's "Transformers" movies to daringly non-mainstream films like Andrea Arnold's "American Honey," was accused in 2020 by ex-girlfriend FKA Twigs of sexual battery, assault, and affliction of emotional distress. Over the last five months, he has both denied these allegations and acknowledged on Jon Bernthal's "Real Ones" podcast that he "hurt that woman." Labeouf also made headlines recently by rebutting, with credible receipts, Olivia Wilde's claim that she fired him from the production of her sophomore directorial effort, "Don't Worry Darling."
Additionally, because he's evidently in an unburdening mood, he disclosed to Bernthal that his autobiographical "Honey Boy" misrepresented his father as an abusive monster. "My dad was so loving to me my whole life," he said.

Shia Labeouf isn’t worried about his comeback.
After parting ways with Olivia Wilde’s “Don’t Worry Darling,” backtracking on the autobiographical status of his “Honey Boy” father-son drama, and speaking out on the abuse allegations and lawsuit filed by ex-partner FKA Twigs, the “Padre Pio” actor has joined Francis Ford Coppola’s massive “Megalopolis” cast.
Labeouf’s casting announcement also included that director Coppola’s sister Talia Shire (“Rocky”) will reunite with the auteur after starring in “The Godfather,” along with nephew Jason Schwartzman. Grace Vanderwaal, Kathryn Hunter, and James Remar also join the ensemble cast.
Previously announced “Megalopolis” mega-stars include Adam Driver, Nathalie Emmanuel, Forest Whitaker, Laurence Fishburne, Jon Voight, and Aubrey Plaza. Updated, August 31, 2:23 p.m. Et: The Baltimore Police Department has now released more information disputing initial extortion reports. Per the Baltimore Banner, the Bpd located the 43-year-old street vendor who said he talked to the “Lady in the Lake” production team at approximately 6 a.m. Et on August 26 to appeal for compensation due to his business being blocked. His official statement does not mention a gun or threat of gun violence.
The location supervisor for “Lady in the Lake” who submitted the initial report has since “retracted his original statement of seeing the gun and advised he did not see a gun but that one of the drivers [had] seen the gun,” but adding that he did witness “a large amount of marijuana” on the street vendor. The vendor was later arrested on a drug charge. The police were called to the set later that afternoon at 4:45 p.m.

Actor Shia Labeouf has been lighting up headlines this week. While he bravely admitted his bout with suicidal thoughts, his battles with director Olivia Wilde on Don’t Worry, Darling have taken the lead. Now, Labeouf is admitting that the so-called autobiographical Honey Boy was anything but. Labeouf fessed up on his friend and The Peanut Butter Falcon co-star Jon Bernthal’s podcast, Real Ones.
In the interview, Labeouf reflected on Honey Boy: “I wrote this narrative, which was just fucking nonsense. My dad was so loving to me my whole life. Fractured, sure. Crooked, sure. Wonky, for sure. But never was not loving, never was not there. He was always there … and I’d done a world press tour about how fucked he was as a man.”
Upon release and on the promotional circuit, Honey Boy–which Shia Labeouf wrote–the actor consistently noted the autobiographical elements and how the...

Shia Labeouf grew up in front of cameras. The actor made his acting debut at age 12 in an episode of "Caroline in the City" before getting a main role in the Disney Channel sitcom "Even Stevens," which lasted for 65 episodes and a movie. Say what you will about his personal life, his stunts, or his career, but he still was the star of an "Indiana Jones" movie, for better and worse. But before he played Indy's son, he was a child actor, with all the problems that come with the territory.
The reality of child stars is a difficult one, as people like Jennette McCurdy ("iCarly") have reminded us in recent times. Abuse by loved ones and by a cold, calculating industry aren't out of the ordinary, unfortunately, and Labeouf used his own experiences as a child actor to write the pseudo-autobiographical Sundance darling "Honey Boy."

Shia Labeouf is finding “Holes” in his own autobiographical film.
The “Padre Pio” actor wrote and starred in 2019 film “Honey Boy” detailing his childhood stardom and fraught relationship with his abusive father, whom Labeouf portrayed in the movie. Noah Jupe and Lucas Hedges play younger versions of Labeouf in the film directed by Alma Har’el (“Lady in the Lake“).
“Disturbia” actor Labeouf penned the screenplay in 2017 after staying in a court-ordered rehab center in Connecticut, where he was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder. Labeouf’s therapist encouraged him to write about the traumatic trigger of his upbringing: living with his ex-convict father in a San Fernando Valley motel.
Now, three years after the film’s release, Labeouf explained during Jon Bernthal’s “Real Ones” podcast that “Honey Boy” took creative liberties with the character of his father and is not an autobiographical account of Labeouf’s childhood.

Shia Labeouf has retracted the way he portrayed his father in his autobiographical film “Honey Boy,” calling it “f—ing nonsense” that “wronged” his father.
The 2019 film, written as a form of therapy when Labeouf was in rehab a few years earlier, centers on a child actor and his difficult relationship with his abusive father, played by Labeouf.
During his recent appearance on Jon Bernthal’s “Real Ones” podcast, the 36 year-old Emmy winner denounced that depiction, according to People.
“Here’s a man who I’ve done vilified on a grand scale,” he said.
