In March 2015, Variety announced that The Leviathan proof of concept teaser from director Ruairi Robinson (The Last Days on Mars) and screenwriter Jim Uhls (Fight Club) racked up over 1.4 million Vimeo views very quickly after it was released. This led to involvement of Neill Blomkamp as executive producer and X-Men: Days of Future Past writer Simon Kinberg, who came onboard to produce a feature film version. Soon after 20th Century Fox picked up the film so a feature of The Leviathan was practically a given. Then Disney bought Fox, which took years to finalize, and the project was put on hold. As of Feb. 2020, no other news has been released.
Ruairi Robinson used Blur Studio's render farm to complete a majority of the render passes he needed to complete the short. He stated in a interview that he crippled their render farm trying to finish everything.
The short film took about a year to complete.
