After holding a year-long bake-off among various celebrities to find the next host of its signature “The Daily Show,” Comedy Central is going to try a new recipe.
When the program returns from a hiatus, it is expected to rely heavily on a team of correspondents to lead each night, according to three people familiar with the matter, though it is not clear if the network has struck upon its final assemblage of talent. “Daily Show” could also rely on guest appearances by some of the celebrities who have hosted the program since Trevor Noah, the last permanent presence behind the desk, quit abruptly in late 2022.
Those looking for an immediate successor for Noah won’t find one — at least, not yet.

CBS debuted its newest late-night show last night and the numbers are.
After Midnight, hosted by Taylor Tomlinson, was watched by an average of 686,000 viewers in the 12:37am hour, per Nielsen’s live+same day fast national data.
This compares to The Late Late Show with James Corden’s live+same day average of 806,000 for its final season.
Some caveats, the data does not yet include viewing from out-of-home, which will be available on Friday, most of the networks only really pay attention to the live+3 numbers, and it was After Midnight’s debut show. It will be interesting to see whether the game show format gets a bigger jump in delayed viewing than a traditional late-night show, which is slightly more topical.
After Midnight was up 31% across all viewers compared to the time period over the season, where Comics Unleashed has often aired while CBS waited to debut The Late Late Show replacement.

A celebration of “The Daily Show” took place earlier this week — but not on the network that airs it.
The program won an Emmy award for “Outstanding Variety Series” and its former host, Trevor Noah, and one of its former top contributors, Roy Wood, Jr., were on hand to take part. Veteran behind-the-scenes executives like Jen Flanz, who runs the program, and Daniel Radosh, a writer who has been with the series since the days of Jon Stewart, were easily viewed.
Despite the hoopla, there has not been a new episode of “The Daily Show” broadcast on its home, Paramount Global’s Comedy Central, since Kal Penn served as a guest on host on Thursday, December 14. There has not been a regular host of the series since Noah, who took over for Jon Stewart in 2015, left unexpectedly in December of 2022. You can’t blame the network for the whole thing.

It’s gonna be fun, right? Comedians, you’ll be competing for the grand prize of my father’s approval. It is rare but winnable.” Unlike...

CBS gave its new late night series “After Midnight” a bit of a soft launch on Tuesday night, premiering the show with minimal fanfare in its 12:37 a.m. timeslot behind “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.” Comedian Taylor Tomlinson hosts the series, which tapes on the Paramount lot in Hollywood.
The decision to keep the “After Midnight” premiere lowkey is by design: Allow the new show to find its voice over the next few weeks, prior to the Super Bowl and return of first-run scripted series in February, when more eyeballs will be back at the broadcast networks.

Last Week Tonight with John Oliver beat Saturday Night Live and A Black Lady Sketch Show to win the first ever Emmy for Outstanding Scripted Variety Series.
John Oliver’s HBO show continued its Emmy win streak, winning its eighth straight Emmy, having won seven years in a row in the Outstanding Variety Talk Series category.
The TV Academy shook up the categories last year, launching Outstanding Scripted Variety Series, alongside Outstanding Talk Series and moved Oliver into the former, going head to head with SNL, which had won the award for Outstanding Variety Sketch Series six years in a row starting in 2017.
Oliver, who was handed the award by Stephen Colbert, his Strike Force 5 co-host, and After Midnight host Taylor Tomlinson, started by thanking his staff, although pointed out that some of them were still in New York “burning down a bar there”.

CBS is ringing in the new year with the debut of the new late-night show that’s taking the place of The Late Late Show with James Corden. The network has announced that the @midnight-inspired late-night series, After Midnight with Taylor Tomlinson, will premiere on Tuesday, January 16 on CBS. After Midnight With Taylor Tomlinson will air at 12:37 a.m. Et/Pt, right after The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. New episodes will air Monday-Friday each week with comedian Taylor Tomlinson (pictured above) serving as host. Stephen Colbert executive produces the series, and @midnight‘s co-creator and showrunner, Jack Martin and Eric Pierce, are co-showrunners and executive producers on this new series. After Midnight is inspired by Comedy Central’s Emmy Award-winning series @midnight and is being billed as “the smartest show on television about the dumbest things on the internet.” “With celebrated comedian Taylor Tomlinson at the helm and...

CBS is making good on its promise to bring After Midnight to its late night lineup in early 2024.
The network will debut the show, hosted by comedian Taylor Tomlinson and based on Comedy Central’s @midnight, on Jan. 16 — or technically Jan. 17, as it debuts at 12:37 a.m. Et/Pt, but at the tail end of the Jan. 16 broadcast day.
The show will feature a panel of comics, actors and other celebrities (guest lineups will be announced later) discussing the internet buzz of the day in a game-show format. After Midnight’s mission statement is to be “the smartest show on television about the dumbest things on the internet.”
After Midnight will air in the post-Late Show With Stephen Colbert spot previously occupied by The Late Late Show, which ran for 28 years under four different hosts. James Corden ended his eight-year tenure as host in April 2023. For the past several months,...

CBS kicks off a new era in late-night on Tuesday, January 16, when it launches “After Midnight” at 12:37 a.m. hosted by comic Taylor Tomlinson.
The series, which will rely on a rotating series of panelists to discuss the latest trends and memes in the digi-sphere, will follow an original hour of CBS’ “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.”
“After Midnight,” based on the premise of “@midnight,” a program that ran on Comedy Central between 2013 and 2017,” breaks late-night tradition at CBS, which has long depended on a more typical program after 12:30 a.m. But network executives, realizing that the business of wee-hours TV is in flux, canceled “The Late Late Show” that has run for decades in that slot, hosted by people such as Tom Snyder, Craig Kilborn, Craig Ferguson and James Corden. “After Midnight” is said to cost significantly less to produce — a boon in an era when...

Nearly nine months after James Corden said goodbye to The Late Late Show, CBS has finally dated his replacement.
After Midnight, a reboot of the old Comedy Central game show @midnight, starring rising comedian Taylor Tomlinson, will premiere on Tuesday, January 16.
The show will, of course, air in The Late Late Show’s former spot at 12:37am, following The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.
It comes almost a year after Deadline revealed that a reboot of @midnight, which ran for 600 episodes on the sibling Paramount-owned network, would replace Corden.
Tomlinson, who has recorded a number of Netflix specials, won the hosting job at the end of last year, beating X Mayo and Ricky Velez for the gig.
Jack Martin, who was the showrunner of all four seasons of @midnight, will serve as co-showrunner alongside Eric Pierce, who has exec produced series including CBS’ The Challenge: USA and The Wheel.

The entertainment industry is wrapping up one of the most chaotic and costly years in its history. From striking writers and actors to swooning stock prices, 2023 didn’t lack for drama.
But even as Hollywood looks to put all that in the rearview mirror and get back to business as usual, the landscape remains treacherous. Wall Street has big concerns about how media companies are handling the shift from cable to streaming. The box office hasn’t recaptured its pre-pandemic stride. Once the epitome of coolness, late-night TV is suffering from a full-blown identity crisis. Elected leaders are eager to crack down on the excesses of Ticketmaster and its ilk. All this upheaval is expected to lead to more consolidation in a space that’s seen century-old companies vanish or get absorbed into larger businesses, displacing thousands of workers and creating unprecedented disruption.

It’s been a strange year for late-night and things are only going to get weirder.
All of the late-night shows were dark between May and October as as a result of the writers strike and the genre lost one of its longer-running shows as The Late Late Show, which has run for over 5,000 episodes since 1995, is to be replaced by an old Comedy Central game show.
The change hasn’t been quite as significant as last year when James Corden and Trevor Noah revealed they’d be stepping down, Warner Bros. Discovery’s new regime killed Samantha Bee’s Full Frontal and Desus & Mero, who, for some, were the duo to reinvigorate the field, broke up.
Late-night, it seems, is just ticking along.

As the fall draws to a close, and the late night talk shows still adjust to their post-strike rhythm (and one host in particular navigates some unexpected health crises), there appears to now be a steady ratings story to be told in live+same day numbers. In adults 18-49, ABC’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live” is emerging as the No. 1 talk show in that key demo, while CBS’ “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” is tops in total viewers.
Boosted this season by the return of NFL Monday Night Football to ABC’s full time lineup, “Jimmy Kimmel Live” is so far up 13 percent in total viewers and has pulled off its most-watched fall since 2020, according to ABC. Among adults 18-49 in live+same day, “Jimmy Kimmel Live” is first in the demo with originals, averaging a 0.20, followed by “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” (0.18) and “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert...

The Late Show with Stephen Colbert continues to bring in the numbers, helped last week by David Letterman’s first return to the show since he stepped down.
Last week, the CBS late-night show also posted its best week of ratings since the first week out of the writers strike and, on Monday, Letterman’s appearance helped the show post its largest number of the season.
While it’s a far cry from the classic days of the late-night wars when Letterman and Jay Leno were battling it out for supremacy, the attention being paid to linear ratings in the late-night space comes at an interesting time.

Ahead of their upcoming co-headlining “Summer Odyssey Tour,” Beck and Phoenix have shared a collaborative new single appropriately titled “Odyssey.” Check it out below.
“Odyssey” is a bubbly, über-electric track, where bass, synthesizers, and marimba combine for a vibrant summer theme song. Written and produced by Beck and Phoenix and mixed by Serban Ghenea, the track sees Beck and Thomas Mars trade verses before joining together for the chorus: “Somewhere/ We’ll fall into the ocean/ I’ll be there/ On an odyssey in the sun.”
The “Summer Odyssey Tour” begins August 1st and features support from Jenny Lewis, Sir Chloe, Japanese Breakfast, and Weyes Blood on select dates. Tickets are on sale here.
Phoenix’s last album was 2022’s Alpha Zulu, while earlier this year they shared a remix of the album cut “After Midnight” featuring Clairo. Back in February, Beck followed his 2019 album Hyperspace with the single “Thinking About You.

Clairo unveiled the new charity single “For Now” via Bandcamp, with proceeds benefiting the non-profits For The Gworls, which supports Black, transgender people to cover rent, gender-affirming surgeries, and more, as well as Everytown, the coalition set on ending gun violence in the United States.
The self-described demo, which the Boston singer-songwriter announced via Twitter on April Fools’ Day, offers few tricks but instead delivers a tender vocal take that embodies the fleeting bliss of a new romance. Backed by spare instrumentation aside from the keys-based bedrock and some light woodwind accompaniment, Clairo lets the devastation of her love’s limited run linger in the chorus as she sings, “I’m loving you for now/ Until it all breaks down.” Stream “For Now” below.
Despite her complete lack of Bandcamp activity since 2016, the singer’s decision to return to the platform was likely due to the charitable intent of the demo’s release.

Clairo released a new demo called “For Now” on Bandcamp. Proceeds from the song will benefit For the Gworls, which raises funds to help Black transgender people with financial aid for rent, medical and travel financial assistance; and Everytown for Gun Safety, which seeks to prevent gun violence by advocating for evidence-based solutions.
On the nimble, keys-led ballad, Claire Cottrill quietly professes her devotion to a person. The lyrics find her eschewing diving too deeply into the thoughts behind what’s happening in favor of enjoying being swept away by the feelings of the moment.

Phoenix have shared their second-ever formal collaboration today, recruiting Clairo for a remix of “After Midnight,” a standout track from the band’s recent album Alpha Zulu.
Though the two artists are longtime fans of each other, it took a few connections before they finally crossed paths: Phoenix met Clairo through Rostam Batmanglij, who produced the indie pop star’s debut album Immunity and whose former Vampire Weekend bandmate Ezra Koenig contributed vocals to the Alpha Zulu single “Tonight” (which we named Song of the Week).
“We’ve loved Claire since day one!” Phoenix share in a press release. “What a treat it is to have her sing with us! We hope you’ll enjoy it as much as we do.” Clairo adds: “I’ve been a massive fan of Phoenix for as long as I can remember, and I’m very grateful that they asked me to sing on this remix.

I didn’t enjoy Terrifier 2 very much, but I was very impressed by the performance delivered by heroine Lauren Lavera, who came off as a star on the rise – and who seemed like such a badass in her confrontation with Art the Clown, I could see her becoming a major force in the action genre, if that’s a path she’s interested in taking. As she continues on her way to stardom, Lavera has signed on to star in a supernatural thriller called The Well – and our friends at Bloody Disgusting were able to dig up some exclusive details on the project.
Federico Zampaglione (Tulpa: Demon of Desire) will be directing The Well and has also written the screenplay with producer Stefano Masi. The film will see Lavera taking on the role of Lisa Gray, a budding art restorer, who travels to a small Italian village to...

For horror fans, Halloween isn’t just a holiday – it’s a state of mind. While most studios, networks and streaming platforms are fine with dropping most of their new horror content in the month of October, that’s just not enough to satisfy our jones for new tales of terror. I recently listed some of the new and upcoming horror movies to keep watch for – both this month and the weeks and months to follow – and it’s about time we did the same for TV series as well.
October brought us some excellent new and returning horror shows to networks and streamers, from a new season of Chucky to some chilling premieres like Interview with the Vampire, and there are still plenty more rolling out in the coming weeks. But right now, I’m going to focus on six new horror series that are coming your way soon...
