She’ll bring the fun to each episode with trademark takes and conversations with celebrity guests. And it wouldn’t be QVC without personalized retail recommendations and shoppable finds. For Philipps, it’s another chance to bring a female voice to a male-dominated space within the entertainment space. The actress plans to tackle topics important to women, and in some cases, may not otherwise get discussed elsewhere. Here Philipps tells us what to expect...

Four years ago, Jenny Yang reached a plateau in her career. She’d achieved many of her goals — she was a successful stand-up comedian, she’d launched her own comedy festival focused on platforming Asian American talent, she’d worked as a staff writer on Busy Tonight — so she sat down to chart something new. Yang decided that what she really wanted to do was become an action comedy star. She trained for a half-marathon and took up kickboxing training. But then a casting director for a new Netflix show about a Taiwanese crime family was scouring the internet during a late-in-the-game search and came across one of her viral stand-up videos. “All they told me was that it was a gang drama and I wouldn’t have to do any accents,” Yang says. “And then they gave me the role and were like, ‘By the way, you will be...

While accepting her Paley Honors Award in recognition of her groundbreaking achievements in television comedy, Carol Burnett took time to look back and share an anecdote with the audience about how she made it to this point in her storied career.
“It was television that gave me my opportunities, but as a woman in this business, it wasn’t always easy to do what the naysayers said couldn’t be done,” Burnett said. “When I exercised a clause in a contract that I had with CBS way back in 1967 that would allow me to do an hour comedy variety show, I was told by the network executives that comedy variety was a man’s game: Sid Caesar, Jackie Gleason, Milton Berle, Dean Martin. They said, and I quote, ‘It’s not for you gals.'”

Samantha Bee is now the only female host in late night, and that’s a stat she’s not happy about. “It’s a bit unsettling,” Bee recently told Variety. “It’s been a bad year to be a woman in this space. It’s not really a badge that I want to wear.”
Shows that have been canceled over the past year include E!’s “Busy Tonight,” hosted by Busy Philipps; Hulu’s Sarah Silverman series “I Love You, America”; Michelle Wolf’s Netflix show “The Break”; and Bet’s “The Rundown” with Robin Thede. Before that, Chelsea Handler’s Netflix talk show was also axed after two years.
“I don’t feel good being the last woman standing in this space currently,” Bee said. “It doesn’t fill my heart with gladness that Busy was canceled, Michelle Wolf’s show is gone, Sarah Silverman’s show is gone.

Seth Meyers became host of “Late Night” — the franchise that had, in previous iterations, been home to David Letterman, then Conan O’Brien, then Jimmy Fallon — in 2014. The first conversation he had with anyone about taking over the show was on the phone with executive producer Lorne Michaels, who called Meyers while the comic was touring on the road.
“When you talk to Lorne Michaels, oftentimes it seems like follow-up call to a conversation you haven’t had,” Meyers told Variety‘s “TV Take” podcast. “So he picks it up as if you’ve already talked about the possibility of you hosting a late-night talk show.” When the call ended, “I hung up the phone and I thought, ‘Wait, did Lorne just tell me that I’m going to host “Late Night”?’ But that is how a lot of news from Lorne comes — as if through a fog.”

“I think in so many ways the show is insanely successful and achieved that in a really short period of time,” declares Busy Phillips about her late-night talk show “Busy Tonight.” Despite the show’s cancellation after a single season, Phillips is unabashedly proud of the series, which earned her a nomination for Best Host at the inaugural Critics Choice Real TV Awards. Watch our exclusive video interview above.
Phillips describes wanting the show to be a mix of Mr. Rogers, Graham Norton and Oprah Winfrey, with a dash of a “Pee-Wee’s Playhouse” vibe. “I knew that I wanted to build a show for late night that doesn’t exist anywhere else,” Phillips admits, “and I wanted it to be imbued with a sense of fun and lightness, and at the same time, I always wanted us to have an undertone of a kind of subversive feminist messaging.”

Across the country on Saturday, movie theaters sold over $12 million in tickets to “Avengers: Endgame,” helping it amass $771 million in the U.S. since its release in April.
On the same day, in a stunning urban greenhouse complex in Dtla, the film’s supporting star Gwyneth Paltrow counted tickets of her own — pricey, perk-loaded passes to the third annual Los Angeles In Goop Health Summit.
Paltrow’s 11-year-old lifestyle and wellness empire is her sole full time job, the Oscar winner confirmed to Variety in February, as she’s resigned her Marvel Universe gig as Iron Man’s better half Pepper Potts.
Instead of giving sound bites about getting red carpet ready or reflecting on Marvel’s remarkable 22-film run, Paltrow sipped a collagen-infused punch and nibbled a quinoa breakfast porridge before hundreds of pristine Goop devotees. This was just before a healing sound bath came ahead of opening remarks,...

Throw on your Mr. Nightgown and pour out a margarita, because it's time to celebrate Busy Tonight's finale. With over 100 episodes under her belt, we had a feeling Busy Philipps and her late night team would pull out all the stops for the last episode. Ahead of Thursday's taping, it was teased that several "surprise guests" would be joining Busy—and we were blown away by the turn out. Yet, Busy had quite the message for those who missed out on the last six months of Busy Tonight. "Here's the thing, guys. One of the greatest things you can do in life is show up," Busy relayed in her monologue. "In the last six months, you know this is just a tv show, but so many people have...

Busy Philipps bid adieu to her short-lived E! late-night show on Thursday with a little help from a few friends: Michelle Williams, Linda Cardellini, Jennifer Carpenter, Christa Miller and Whitney Cummings, the latter of whom threw some shade on E! for cancelling the show.
"You had a talk show for a minute, would you ever do it again?" Philipps asked Cummings after she arrived on set, minutes into the Busy Tonight finale.
"Not on E!" Cummings replied.
"Now that's what friends are for," Williams joked.

Leslie Mann never told Brendan Fraser about her late '90s crush. But the cat's out of the bag in this clip from Wednesday's Busy Tonight, which sees Leslie waxing nostalgic about early mornings on set with her George of the Jungle co-star, who apparently used to greet her with a casual lip-kiss before getting into costume. "Every morning before work we were in the hair and makeup trailer getting ready. And he would come in and kiss me on the lips," she tells host Busy Philipps with an ear-to-ear grin. "Just like, 'Good morning!' And kiss. You know, like he's European or something." Leslie got used to those morning smooches—earlier in the clip, the actor...

On the third-to-last episode of E!'s Busy Tonight, host Philipps welcomed guest Chelsea Handler for a chat about her new book, a memoir titled Life Will be the Death of Me.

The women of Wine Country have been making great content for decades. So it's pretty bizarre that some journalists still start interviews with Maya Rudolph and say, "Well, it's an exciting time to be a woman in comedy!" Yawn. The superstar comedian laments comments like those in this clip from Monday's Busy Tonight, which sees her responding to a series of eye-roll-inducing hypothetical statements drawn up by host Busy Philipps. (The hypothetical reporter round is promptly followed by another scenario in which a relative calls to say "that dress you wore to the award show is tacky.") Just days after announcing that the show had been canceled, Busy Philipps opened up to her “Busy Tonight” audience about her decision to have an abortion and a Georgia law challenging the ability of women to make that same choice. The moment went viral, and the response has, she said, been largely positive.
“I’ve been overwhelmed by the response in the last 24 hours, and certainly online, by the support, because I was ready for all the other stuff,” Philipps said. “And certainly, there have been some people that have, whatever, called me names on Instagram. On Tuesday, Brian Kemp, the governor of Georgia, signed a law that effectively bans abortion after six weeks of pregnancy according to the New York Times. It was only fitting that late night host Busy Philipps announced the imminent cancellation of her E! talk show “Busy Tonight” on her Instagram account, posting a heartfelt, multi-video story late Sunday night that shared the news with her many social media-savvy fans. Busy Philipps’ talk show Busy Tonight has been cancelled by E! and will air its last episode on the cable network on May 16.
Philipps revealed the news in a late-night Instagram video. She said that she was very proud of the show and that she was in talks with other potential homes for the series, which runs four nights a week.
The series, which is produced by Tina Fey’s Little Stranger banner and Wilshire Studios, moved from its original 10pm home to 11pm when it returned on January 7, a move that Philipps previously called a “vote of confidence”.
The actress added it was “lame” that there would “just be one woman in late night at a time”. The series will run four episodes this week and four episodes next week before its end.
