Manny Perez is set to return as the justice-seeking hitman in Vengeance: A La Soga Story, with Ana Lapointe and Felix German also boarding the mostly Latino cast list.
Clay Epstein’s Film Mode Entertainment has started shopping the crime-focused action thriller, now in post-production, to foreign buyers in Cannes, with Perez set to play La Soga, the Dominican Republic’s most dangerous hitman who returns home to fight corruption, only to be targeted by assassins.
Driven by a relentless pursuit of revenge and family, La Soga is determined to reveal the truth and fight for justice.
“It’s a pleasure and an honor to be working with Clay and his team at Film Mode Entertainment. It’s been a long journey, carrying this story through, but I am thrilled and excited for its outcome. I know my film is in good hands,” Perez said in a statement.

You ever notice how HBO’s releases tend to do the heavy lifting in HBO Max’s content library? That makes plenty of sense given that HBO has a track record of producing hits well before the streaming era even began. Well, a similar concept is now playing out over on Hulu. Like many monthly releases before it, Hulu’s list of new releases for August 2022 is highlighted by a whole bunch of FX TV shows.
The initiative once known as “FX on Hulu” is no more but that’s not stopping the cable network-turned quality TV brand from churning out some intriguing titles for the streaming world this month. It all starts early on with season 2 of the delightful comedy Reservation Dogs on Aug. 3. That is followed up by the docuseries Children of the Underground on Aug. 13, Little Demon on Aug. 26, and The Patient of Aug. 30. The most interesting of the bunch,...

‘Jump, Darling’ Review: Drag Performer Ascends, Grandma Exits in One of Cloris Leachman’s Last Turns
Not even the final feature for recently-deceased Cloris Leachman (she put two more in the can before passing this January at age 94), “Jump, Darling” nonetheless is primarily of interest for that veteran performer’s participation. Otherwise, writer-director Phil Connell’s debut feature treads ground similar to last year’s “Stage Mother,” whose somewhat retro emphasis on lip-synching drag performance as a vehicle for self-realization likewise recalled a much earlier dramedy from Canada, “Outrageous!”
If that theme was groundbreaking 44 years ago, it seems rather quaint now, and “Jump” doesn’t help its case by centering on a troubled young protagonist whose issues are as murky as their apparent solution is simplistic. However, playing his senile yet still tart-tongued grandmother, Leachman lends the film a certain unforced gravitas that provides compensational rewards. Those looking for familiar seriocomic beats in a modest but polished LGBTQ-targeted indie will find this pleasant enough. Currently playing gay festivals,...

Sales slate includes on As Sick As They Made Us, Dig.
Clay Epstein’s Los Angeles-based sales agency Film Mode Entertainment (Fme), in talks with buyers at the virtual Cannes market on As Sick As They Made Us and Dig, has set up a consultancy business.
Fme Consulting will help filmmakers navigate all stages of the filmmaking process from development to financing, production, and distribution.
The division will run separately from the sales business, so Film Mode will not necessarily handle sales on films from consultancy clients unless it suits both parties. Similarly sales clents will only access consultancy services if they request it.

There are good movies, there are bad movies, and then there is “Good Joe Bell,” a uniquely terrible treatment of an important topic — broadly described as “inclusivity” and “tolerance” by the film’s wild-eyed protagonist (Mark Wahlberg) — whose hubristic title is the first clue that it’s not playing fair. Joe Bell was a man like any other, who attempted to turn tragedy into a teaching moment. The movie has little to add to a story that got some local and national media attention and that, frankly, lends itself better to a 90-second TV news brief than a feature-length film.
“I mean, everybody’s against bullying, aren’t they?” Joe Bell asks his weary wife (Connie Britton) before setting off on a cross-country campaign for “change.” If they were, Bell wouldn’t need to make this trek, America wouldn’t have elected a bully as president, and his first lady...

Once Upon a Time, There Was Light in My Life: Fitzgerald Soars with Bittersweet Melodrama
A testament for the continual importance of narratives which explore the fractured and compromised trajectories of LGBTQ+ themes and characters arrives in the form of Stage Mother, the latest film from director Thom Fitzgerald. On paper, it sounds like something you’ve seen before, especially if you’re a consumer of indie queer cinema in the US—and to be fair, it’s quite reminiscent of the kinds of characters and stories which flourished in the late 1990s and early 2000s, where films and television weren’t always entirely focused on coming out stories and high school trauma but a wide range of phases and scenarios.…...

Giving a leading role to Jacki Weaver is something any filmmaker should be commended for. The veteran actress is a welcome presence anywhere, no matter the topic. Casting her as the lead in a fish out of water type dramedy? Well, that should be the main ingredient to a delicious cinematic dish. Unfortunately, Stage Mother ends up more like a fast food dish when you were hoping for fine dining. Does it mostly get the job done? Sure, but it also doesn’t particularly satisfy you. The premise, along with Weaver’s talents, ultimately keep this from being something that leaves an impression on you. Opening this week, it’s a missed opportunity for something wonderful. The movie is a dramedy, focused on a southern woman evolution in the Bay Area. When Maybelline (Weaver), a conservative, Texas church-choir director finds out that her son Rickey (Eldon Thiele) has passed away from a drug overdose,...

Road-rage thriller “Unhinged,” starring Russell Crowe, topped the U.K. and Ireland box office over the weekend collecting £175,263, according to final numbers released by Comscore.
The film, released by Altitude Film Distribution, played at 243 locations, marking a cautious return by audiences to cinemas, despite the territory being in the middle of a heat wave.
“Over the past few months we have shared the well-publicized concern about the state and future of cinema and the arts. Whilst this remains unclear as we all learn to cope with Covid-19, we’re encouraged by the support ‘Unhinged’ received from cinemas and audiences in its opening weekend,” said Altitude, which last month released killer croc thriller “Black Water: Abyss” and Jacki Weaver and Lucy Liu comedy “Stage Mother.” In the coming weeks, the distributor is set to release Ladj Ly’s “Les Miserables.”

Russell Crowe thriller Unhinged became the most high-profile UK cinema release in the pandemic era this week, taking a provisional $230K from 250 sites, an average of around $920, with venues still to report.
That number may look fairly minor on first glance but in the current context it offers reason for optimism. Two weeks ago, the entire UK box office totaled $253K with just 15% of cinemas operational (roughly 130). Now, we are at 323 sites open, representing 36% of the total real estate (919 sites). Slowly but surely, the industry is restarting.
The country’s two largest exhibitors, Odeon and Cineworld, are in the process of phased re-openings. Cineworld opened its first venues on Friday (July 31) while Odeon has been taking a slow and steady approach for a few weeks, but numerous major sites including key London venues remain shuttered. The UK’s third largest exhibitor Vue has delayed its re-opening until August 7, when it...

Katie Holmes sees her life transformed by a mysterious stranger in a featherweight adaptation of the bestselling self-help book
The key tenet of Rhonda Byrne’s mystical self-help blockbuster The Secret is that if one desires and then really thinks about something hard enough then it will ultimately appear. If this tracks then somewhere, deep in America, one of the book’s many superfans has been close to bursting a blood vessel visualising a $20 rental of a once theatrically aimed movie adaptation, mood-boarding a costly night in with a middle-of-the-road sub-Nicholas Sparks pile of soap bubbles. It’s a frothy, forgettable translation of the hit book that takes its central belief system and uses it as the basis for a vaguely magical romantic drama for moms.

Thanks to the ever-growing popularity of RuPaul’s reality game-show, drag has become increasingly present in the public eye. Once an underground LGBT culture, drag is now in most households, in our music, and also in our cinema.
Of course, drag has been in films since the creation of cinema with popular movies such as Priscilla, Queen of the Desert and To Wong Foo, With Love Julie Newmar becoming cult classics. Now it is part of the mainstream, we can expect more and more movies about drag culture, such as this charming new release.
Directed by Thorn Fitzgerald and starring Jackie Weaver, Stage Mother revolves around conservative mother Maybelline who has been estranged from her son after he came out as gay. As cinemas begin to reopen again in many territories, Screen is tracking which films are being released in key territories each week.
UK and Ireland, opening Friday July 24
Without major studio tentpoles driving audiences to cinemas, takings in the UK and Ireland remain low compared to pre-lockdown and were up just 1.8% last weekend despite a 27% increase in reopened sites.
But a raft of independent features and the re-release of a fantasy blockbuster may translate into a stronger weekend, as exhibitors hope to see audience confidence grow in returning to cinemas.

The number of drive-in cinemas across the U.K. has exploded from three to 40 during the coronavirus pandemic, according to new data from media measurement firm Comscore seen by Variety.
Prior to the spread of the virus, the country had just three drive-in cinemas: two Cinestock sites at Haywards Heath, as well as The Star and Mouse Picture Show, which operates as an outdoor cinema at some sites and as a drive-in at others.
From July through September, however, at least 40 additional sites are offering socially distanced cinema experiences to audiences in their vehicle bubbles, with several venues even featuring roller-blading, masked service staff delivering pre-ordered snacks. Many of these cinemas are not in grim car parks, but in the spacious grounds of stately homes, museums or vast parks, making for a unique experience. Tickets generally range from £27-£35 ($34-$45) per car.

The late Richard Benner’s 1977 “Outrageous!” blazed trails as both a hit Canadian export and positive screen depiction of gay life, two relative rarities at the time. Even then, some gay viewers found the funny-sad friendship between a hairdresser/professional drag queen and a young schizophrenic woman a bit old-fashioned. But everybody was won over by Craig Russell’s stage impersonations of Hollywood stars — schmaltz and camp being a reliable combination for gay cinema with crossover ambitions.
That formula has scarcely altered 43 years later for “Stage Mother.” It’s the latest from Thom Fitzgerald, whose 1997 “The Hanging Garden” was also shot in Nova Scotia, and helped herald a new, perhaps more politically bold and artistically adventuresome generation of gay Canadian filmmakers. His more recent work has fitted into a time-tested mould of sentimental seriocomedy, however. This tale of a small-town Texas matron who inherits her estranged son’s San Francisco drag bar offers up smiles,...

Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Thom Fitzgerald's Stage Mother, direct from YouTube: When conservative,...
