In the modern video game industry, almost every developer and publisher has their eyes on starting a franchise from day one of development. Features get cut that would fit better in a sequel. Plot points are set up for a future game. If you can franchise something, you can make a lot more money.
But sometimes, those plans don’t quite work out. A game sells well, a sequel gets greenlit, and for whatever reason, it barely makes a dent in the gaming consciousness, or maybe it never even makes its way to the West. Some of these sequels were stumbling blocks in bigger franchises, or offshoots that got stuck on platforms with small userbases. And a few seemed poised for bigger things but never quite caught on. Regardless of the how or why, these are some of the most notable video game sequels you probably forgot existed.

Yeoman Janice Rand, the character played by Grace Lee Whitney in the original "Star Trek," only appeared in eight episodes of the show, but she left an impression. By Whitney's own description, Janice Rand was a "girl next door" type, adding a relatable element to the wild sci-fi setting of a series set in the 23rd century. While Captain Kirk (William Shatner) conversed and analyzed with Spock (Leonard Nimoy), Rand was busy doing petty jobs, filing paperwork, and distributing refreshments. I can't speak for other Trekkies, but when imagining myself getting a job on the U.S.S. Enterprise, I imagine being a yeoman is all I'd be qualified for.
Whitney has said in her autobiography "The Longest Trek: My Tour of the Galaxy," that Rand was written out of "Star Trek" because she had too much chemistry with Kirk. The relationship between Janice and Jim could easily have developed into something romantic,...

In William Shatner's film "Star Trek V: The Final Frontier," the U.S.S. Enterprise is hijacked by a hippie Vulcan cult leader named Sybok (Laurence Luckinbill) and flown to the very center of the Milky Way. In reality, the galaxy's center is the site of a supermassive black hole called Sagittarius A*. In "Frontier," Sybok believes it's where God lives. Not a spiritual conduit to God, mind you, but the actual physical body of God Himself. Kirk (Shatner) and Spock (Leonard Nimoy) think Sybok is mad, but are dragged along in his mad scheme.
When the Enterprise arrives at its destination, however, it seems for a few moments that Sybok is right. He and the Enterprise crew encounter and land on a mysterious planet, and God Himself (George Murdock) appears. Everyone is awestruck ... except for Kirk. When God asks the mortal characters for a starship to spread His Word,...

Stuntman-turned-director Derek Barnes has expanded his 2016 short Walking Supply into a feature, which made its world premiere at this year’s Blood in the Snow film festival.
Walking Supply opens with a bang as the Russian offices of an international corporation are raided by armed men of unknown origin who kidnap several of the staff. The men end up in a labour camp, and the women probably have an even worse fate. They’re told if their company pays for their release, they’ll be freed. Until then, work until you drop if you don’t want to starve.

Taylor Swift's "Reputation," released in 2017, is kind of two albums put together. On one half of the album, she takes swipes at people who betrayed her and proves, as she sings on "Look What You Made Me Do," that the "old Taylor" is "dead." On the other half, Swift sings about her early days of love with then-boyfriend Joe Alwyn (the pair split earlier in 2023). One of the songs in the second, romantic half is titled "Dress," and it's one of Swift's most sensual tracks. She sings on the chorus, "Say my name and everything just stops. / I don't want you like a best friend. / Only bought this dress so you could take it off."
Back when the song was released, and in part because of the "best friend" reference, some fans originally thought the song was about Swift's friend Ed Sheeran, but he clarified that it definitely wasn't...

Netflix is one such platform that doesn’t shy away from any sort of content. Whether it be a feature film from the remotest part of the world or a short film that is well made, just so long as there is a hint of a vision. Two new short films have been dropped on Netflix titled Flashback and Disco Inferno that might interest horror fans. Both short films evoke a strong sense of the supernatural, one even dealing with a bit of a sci-fi time travel scheme. Short films usually work when there is a strong idea at the core or two thoughts or styles are pitted against each other to create a polarity that is engaging for that short amount of time. Flashback, with its idea of changing the past while one is literally dying, is fantastical, but with its naivety, it becomes endearing. Disco Inferno pits the...

Jed Shepherd, the writer of Shudder sensation Host as well as Rob Savage’s follow-up Dashcam, sat in the director’s chair for Flashback, a new horror short coming to Netflix.
“I’m very excited to announce Flashback, which I wrote/directed for Netflix,” Shepherd tweets this week. “It stars some of the loveliest people I know and is out This Friday, October 20.”
Shepherd has also shared a teaser trailer for Flashback, which stars Jemma Moore (Host) as a yoga teacher. Set in South London, the short features “time travel and monsters.”
Of particular note, Fangoria brings us the word that mega popular artist Trevor Henderson (Mayfair Watcher’s Society) worked with Shepherd on the short’s monster design!
In Flashback, “a yoga teacher’s life flashes before her eyes during a home invasion. Before time runs out she must use the flashback to race back in time and save the man she loves.

Plenty of haunted, Halloween and holiday options will crop up on Netflix in the month of October. The harvest doesn’t seem too lean despite the almost five-month writers strike that viewers are sure to feel next year, but at least the WGA and AMPTP have reached a deal, and hopefully, SAG-AFTRA is not too far behind. Luckily, Halloween and fall have a classic canon of films and TV shows that stretches back decades, and some of those staple watches will be available through Netflix throughout the month.
Movies include “Casper,” “Scarface” and the first two “The Amazing Spider-Man” films. New arrivals worth the wait include Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune” starring Zendaya and Timotheé Chalamet among other heavy hitters, “Fair Play” with Phoebe Dynevor and Alden Ehrenreich and David Yates’ “Pain Hustlers” starring Emily Blunt and Chris Evans. There are a few standout new releases on Netflix in October, but it’s a rather quiet month on the world’s most popular streaming service otherwise!
Highlights this month include a brand-new series from Spook Master Mike Flanagan. The Fall of the House of Usher is a gothic tale loosely based on the short story of the same name by Edgar Allan Poe, and tells the story of two extremely unpleasant siblings whose family dynasty ends up going to hell in a handbasket. Before you ask: yes, Rahul Kohli is in it. That’s all that a lot of people need to know here (we’re people).
Elsewhere, Netflix is dropping a few interesting-looking docuseries, including one on football legend David Beckham. It promises to be an “intimate portrait” of Beckham, and the filmmakers were apparently granted unprecedented access to the sportsman and his family while making it.

Taylor Swift and Joe Alwyn's split after six years of dating has rocked fans of the Hollywood couple. According to an April 8 Entertainment Tonight report, the breakup happened weeks before it was made public and "was not dramatic." Apparently, "the relationship had just run its course."
Swift and Alwyn's relationship was incredibly sweet and low-key. They made very few official appearances together over the years, but Swift often alluded to their romance in her music, like when she sang about falling head over heels for the British actor in her song "Gorgeous." The lyrics recall her getting lost in his ocean-blue eyes, make fun of his British accent, and indicate she had a boyfriend when they first met (more on that later).
So, just how did the former lovebirds initially come into contact? The timeline is a little bit fuzzy, but it's believed the pair first met at...

This post contains spoilers for season 3, episode 7 of "Star Trek: Picard."
The raison d'être of the third season of "Star Trek: Picard" has been its much-touted reunion of seven members from the "Star Trek: The Next Generation" cast. That the season is on its seventh episode and the fact that the entire cast has yet to be gathered in one room only reveals the showrunners' utmost restraint. Given the events of the last few episodes, however, one can rest assured that the actual reunion is coming soon.
Despite the restraint on display, the new season of "Picard" has nonetheless whetted Trekkies' appetite for cameos, reunions, and other fun in-jokes and nostalgic references. In the timeline of "Picard," multiple notable "Star Trek" characters are still alive and thriving, and some viewers may have their fingers crossed for appearances from some of their favorites. Mexican American pop artist Becky G has spoken frequently about the way she’s elevated her career by collaborating with her female peers, especially those in the Latin-music landscape. She’s also worked with some well-known men who dominate the charts — from Bad Bunny (2017’s “Mayores”) to Maluma (2019’s “La Respuesta”). That sense of community is all over her new album, too. Yet, there comes a time when an artist has to assert their autonomy — and on Esquemas, Becky G takes center stage, even when she’s collaborating. The result is her best music yet.

Photo: ‘Flashback'/Lionsgate Films ‘Flashback’: Connecting Present, Future, And Past Director-writer Christopher MacBride’s second feature film, 'Flashback' follows Fred (Dylan O'Brien) in his 30s with a seemingly normal-bland life that is until he begins experiencing disorientating flashbacks to a time in which he has blatantly forgotten. In the start, these flashbacks show images of unknown people, more specifically the face of Cindy (Maika Monroe) but Fred’s knowledge of why or what is uncertain. Details uncovered within these trips to the past include the disappearance of Cindy, experimentation with a drug called Mercury, and a recurring visit from a man with a scarred face who speaks in broken words. “Flashback” proves it’s possible to create a Christopher Nolan-esque, fantasy-tinged narrative puzzle of interlocking realities without need of a major-studio budget or elaborate CGI. Whether it says much of anything else may depend on your attitude toward such labyrinths — whether you need them to actually go somewhere, or conversely find that surface complexity provides depth and meaning in itself.
Writer-director Christopher MacBride’s second feature (following paranoid found-footage horror “The Conspiracy” by nearly a decade) stars Dylan O’Brien as a young man haplessly trying to navigate a wormhole of comingled memories and visions perhaps belatedly triggered by teenage drug experimentation. Formerly titled (and still being released in some markets as) “The Education of Fredrick Fitzell,” the movie’s pileup of dislocating side-swipes from any tangible here/now is intriguing and well-crafted to a degree many genre fans will find exciting. The cast includes Maika Monroe, Keir Gilchrist, Hannah Gross, Emory Cohen, Amanda Brugel, and Aaron Poole. There's a bunch of strange things going on in here, not only flashbacks and timeline flips, but lots of odd characters around. Worth a look if you dig mysteries. Former Teen Wolf star Dylan O’Brien has been through a transitional and challenging period after a serious accident on the set of the final Maze Runner film left him with injuries that required reconstructive surgery. The actor’s recovery coincided with him reading a script called The Education Of Fredrick Fitzell, a low-budget, mind-bending drama written by Canadian filmmaker Christopher MacBride, whose previous credits include 2012 horror The Conspiracy. The material sparked with O’Brien in an intense way, he tells Deadline in his first interview about the movie, connecting with that period of his life and reflecting some of what he was going through. “I was a mess,” he admits frankly.
