Other Angle has boarded international sales rights on Maria Gabriela Cardenas’ thriller “A Dark Foe” in the run up to the AFM.
The film stars the helmer’s father Oscar Cardenas, Selma Blair, Kenzie Dalton, Graham Greene and Bill Bellamy. It follows a guilt-ridden FBI agent, Tony Cruz, stranded in the painful memory of the abduction of his sister, who has to face-off with the serial killer who took her away. “A Dark Foe” was released by Vertical Entertainment in the U.S. in July.
Cardenas, who co-wrote the film with her father, said, “Tony Cruz’s devoted love and obsession to find his sister and his irrational fear of the dark is what makes ‘A Dark Foe’ a unique story that resonates with every audience.”
“The world of ‘A Dark Foe’ is obscure with noir tones and suspense mixed with horror elements that will make the audience cringe, while,...

Well, it’s official: Thanks to the coronavirus — and the kind of real-world disaster-movie mayhem that even Hollywood couldn’t invent — summer movie season is canceled. Now that “Tenet” and “Mulan” have both scrapped their summer U.S. theatrical release plans, there’s nothing even remotely resembling a blockbuster on the horizon.
The good news — and there is good news — is that we’re deep enough into this pandemic that distributors have figured out how to release their films virtually, and in some cases, to drive-ins and those few hardtop venues safe (or stubborn) enough to remain open. That means moviegoers can see thrillers “The Rental” and “Amulet,” as well as Vinnie Jones starrer “The Big Ugly,” in select theaters this week, while movie-stayers — those living under lockdown, or simply too cautious to return to cinemas — can order the same movies on demand.
Meanwhile, the streaming services continue to thrive.

"Two couples, one baby, and no regrets." Gravitas has unveiled a trailer for an indie romantic comedy titled Babysplitters, which premiered at the Santa Barbara Film Festival last year and it played at the Newport Beach, Vancouver, Raindance, Nashville, and San Diego Film Festivals. Then the sometimes messy business of conception. Then, well... The cast is lead by Danny Pudi, Emily C. Chang, Maiara Walsh, and Eddie Alfano. Described as "combining the DNA of She's Having a Baby and Indecent Proposal", this quirky romantic comedy film tries to redefine the expectations of what parenting is supposed to be. But does it all work out...? You'll have to watch to find out. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Sam Friedlander's Babysplitters,...

Other Angle has picked up international sales rights to “Babysplitters,” a U.S. comedy directed by Sam Friedlander (“Larry Gaye: Renegade Male Flight Attendant”) as part of the French company’s move into English-language movies.
“Babysplitters” is a high-concept comedy about two couples who have mixed feelings about having kids and hatch a plan to share one baby. While it initially seems like the perfect compromise, things spiral out of control.
The movie, which stars Danny Pudi, Emily Chang, Maiara Walsh and Eddie Alfano, has already screened at North American festivals, including Santa Barbara and San Diego, where it won awards. It also played at the Vancouver International Film Festival.
Variety‘s review of “Babysplitters” said “The trials and travails of impending parenthood are captured through Friedlander’s highly comedic filter, giving birth to enough dazzling wit to sustain the gimmick.”
Friedlander said the film was inspired by his own doubts and fears about parenthood.

The 35th Santa Barbara International Film Festival will run from Jan. 15 to Jan. 25, 2020 — a radical shift in dates that will affect Oscar strategies as well as other festivals.
Next year, Academy Award nominations will be announced Jan. 13, two days before the start of the Santa Barbara Festival. The Oscar ceremony will be Feb. 9, which is two weeks earlier than this year’s event. Those changes will continue to have a ripple effect on the dates of other festivals as well as awards planning.
The Santa Barbara Fest has enjoyed a long (but unofficial) Oscar connection. This year, Variety presented its annual Artisan Awards earlier this week to nine behind-the-camera creatives who are all Oscar nominees; other contenders saluted at Sbiff this year include Glenn Close, Viggo Mortensen, Rami Malek, Melissa McCarthy, and Richard E. Grant.
Santa Barbara next year will overlap with Sundance, which will run from Jan. 23 to Feb.

Good friends often split restaurant checks, but can they split child-raising duties? That’s the catchy premise of writer-director Sam Friedlander’s outrageous comedy “Babysplitters,” which earned the Panavision Spirit Award for Independent Cinema at the Santa Barbara film fest. Combining the DNA of “She’s Having a Baby” and “Indecent Proposal,” Friedlander’s audacious hook is sure to spur thought-provoking discussions about its progressive parenting ideas. The trials and travails of impending parenthood are captured through Friedlander’s highly comedic filter, giving birth to enough dazzling wit to sustain the gimmick.
Married couple Sarah (Emily Chang) and Jeff Penaras (Danny Pudi) are having trouble trying to conceive — that is, to conceive of a life as full-time parents. Jeff’s feeling the pressure of being stuck in a dead-end sales job at a startup company, and Sarah is feeling the pressure of being at the mercy of her ticking biological clock.
