George Lucas’s Endorsement of Obi-Wan Kenobi Series The Disney-era of Star Wars has certainly brought us a myriad of stories and characters, but few have received the level of endorsement from the original creator himself, George Lucas, as the Obi-wan Kenobi series has. A standout in the constellation of Disney’s Star Wars universe, this series has been praised by Lucas, elevating it to one of his favorite things since the franchise’s acquisition by Disney. Understanding why George Lucas particularly enjoys this series involves a deep dive into what the show represents and revisits within the Star Wars saga. Rooted in

On May 4th, as part of the 2024 Podathan charity streaming event benefiting the Make-a-Wish Foundation, members of Lucasfilm's "Star Wars" story team Pablo Hidalgo and Matt Martin spoke to the hosts of the Full of Sith podcast. The show has been producing almost weekly episodes since 2013 and has covered plenty of "Star Wars" news, and Hidalgo and Martin, among others, have been frequent guests on the podcast over the years.
Hidalgo spoke to my co-host Holly Frey ("Stuff You Missed in History Class") in a wide-ranging interview about his work with Lucasfilm and on "Star Wars". As someone who is intimately involved with the storytelling process at Lucasfilm, Hidalgo elaborated on how that works and what he really does. He's been working at Lucasfilm for over 20 years and was on set for most of the prequels and was even in charge of the revolutionary web-cam that was on set for "Attack of the Clones.

George Lucas Gives Obi-Wan Kenobi Series His Seal of Approval - Main Image
George Lucas may have handed the reins of Star Wars to Disney, but the creator of one of the biggest science-fiction franchises in existence has apparently still been keeping up with what's happening in a galaxy far, far away.
In fact, the Lucasfilm founder is a huge fan of a recent Star Wars series that didn't exactly achieve the same level of success as some of Disney's streaming offerings like The Mandalorian and Ahsoka.

There will be spoilers for "Star Wars: Tales of the Empire," so beware.
First introduced in the limited "Obi-Wan Kenobi" TV series that debuted in 2002 on Disney+, the Fourth Sister was an early member of the Inquisitorius and helped hunt down Jedi for many years during the Dark Times. Little is known about her past, other than that she was once a Jedi who turned to the dark side and the safety of the Empire after the events of Order 66. A humanoid with greenish skin and head tails, the Fourth Sister remains largely a mystery. Thanks to the new "Star Wars: Tales of the Empire" animated shorts, we have some more details about her and her past -- and also many hints about her future.
The other "villain" that features in these stories is Barriss Offee, the young Mirialan Padawan who framed Ahsoka Tano for murder in "Star Wars: The Clone Wars.

Hulu’s “We Were the Lucky Ones” is primed for a big night at this year’s Emmys. Adapted from the Georgia Hunter‘s 2017 book of the same name, the limited series follows the Kurcs, a Polish Jewish family who were split apart during World War II: some members go into hiding and others are forced into concentration camps. The series, brutal and dark, follows the family’s attempts to reunite after the war ends. It’s a tough watch but a vital one and the series, created by Erica Lipez, is intelligent in its portrayal of such hard subject matter, as noted by critics.
Aramide Tinubu (Variety) stated: “Devastating, and profoundly moving, ‘We Were the Lucky Ones’ illustrates the scope of World War II, the inhumanity of others and the anguish of disconnection and loss.”
Matthew Gilbert (Boston Globe) observed: “Yes, the miniseries is challenging, and steeped in heartbreak,...

Out of the many "Star Wars" shows that have come out of the Disney era, "Obi-Wan Kenobi" is arguably the weirdest. Like "The Book of Boba Fett," it is a show about one of the most beloved characters in the entire franchise, which brings back beloved actors, and promises to answer some questions fans had wondered about for years in regards to Kenobi's actions and whereabouts before meeting Luke Skywalker. Our own Ethan Anderton called this an unnecessary prequel in his review, but acknowledged that it's also "a thrilling new adventure that adds enticing emotional layers to the Jedi Master's story."
The show depicts Obi-Wan Kenobi hiding from his guilt over what happened to Anakin, from the ghosts of all his dead friends, and from the dangers of the Empire. Before Kenobi reclaimed his connection to the Force, he was just a sad hermit living in the desert. But we...

“The Curse” has become one of the most talked-about shows this year with its idiosyncratic mix of cringe comedy, weird horror, marital drama, and sentiment proving to be a recipe for brilliance. The acclaimed Showtime drama series follows Nathan Fielder and Oscar winner Emma Stone as a newly married couple who host an HGTV show. They try to conceive a child as they navigate the effects of a curse.
Fielder and Stone’s performances propel the show to greatness and they are ably supported by Benny Safdie, who co-created the show with Fielder. He plays a desperate producer and while the role is scenery-chewing enough, it’s also a great role for filmmaker Safdie to once again show his acting chops, as noted by critics.
Nick Schager (The Daily Beast) proclaimed: “Safdie makes him a behind-the-scenes sorta-psycho who’s as compelling as his on-air compatriots, inhabiting Dougie with a brand...

Upon their release, the prequel trilogy was seen as a major step down from the original, which changed the sci-fi landscape in the ’70s. But following the rise of social media, the Ewan McGregor-led Star Wars flicks saw an upsurge in popularity, with fans showcasing their fondness for McGregor’s portrayal of Obi-Wan Kenobi.
This would eventually push him to reprise the character in the 2022 Disney Plus show. But initially, after Revenge of the Sith, McGregor did not intend to return to the role following his experience with the critics.

“Lessons in Chemistry” is Apple TV’s shiny new limited series and it looks like the streaming service has another major Emmy player. Oscar winner Brie Larson is Elizabeth Zott, a lab technician in the 1960s who takes up a gig as the host of a cooking show and uses her position to educate women about scientific topics. “The Office” writer and director and “Jury Duty” creator Lee Eisenberg adapted Bonnie Garmus‘ book of the same name. Critics were effusive in their praise of the show.
Peter Travers (ABC News) wrote: “This fierce, funny and vital series tackles a mid-century battle for women’s rights through the eyes of a chemist—an Emmy-bound Brie Larson—who uses a local TV cooking show to lead the charge.”
Cristina Escobar (Roger Ebert) noted: “Lee Eisenberg crafts an aspirational fairytale, building a positively lovely universe and central heroine to spend eight episodes with.

For years, Ewan McGregor was forced to play coy or straight-up lie about a return to the “Star Wars” universe as the Jedi knight Obi-Wan Kenobi. But once the 2022 “Obi-Wan Kenobi” series on Disney+ aired, the actor seemingly couldn’t help but talk about it. In fact, despite Obi-Wan getting his due and finally getting to face-off against arch nemesis Darth Vader—seemingly what fans had wanted all along—McGregor still thinks there could be more appearances for the character, even though he’s meant to quietly protect and oversee Luke Skywalker for 18 years on Tattooine as part of the “Star Wars” mythos.

Star Wars has quite a list of projects in the works currently, from Mangold’s new Star Wars film that takes place thousands of years in the past to Waititi’s undisclosed project that he claimed “will piss off the fans.’ There’s also a new movie focusing on Rey’s restoration of the Jedi order 15 years in the future, which won’t, according to the rumors, lead to a new trilogy but will rather be a standalone movie. No one ever really leaves the galaxy far, far away. Liam Neeson’s Qui-Gon Jinn was the first character (chronologically) to master the art of a spiritual return from the grave (a spectacle known to fans as becoming a “Force ghost”) and the estate of Peter Cushing was the first to allow his character, Grand Moff Tarkin, to reappear thanks to creepy computer imaging in “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.” So, between the two, you can rest assured that as long as there will never be star peace, we’ll see Ewen McGregor back as Obi-Wan Kenobi is some kind of “Star Wars” project.

“No one’s ever really gone,” Luke Skywalker famously said in 2017’s “Star Wars – Episode VIII – The Last Jedi.” A poignant line about memory and those we keep dear in our hearts, the line arguably had the double ironic meaning of how no one ever actually ever dies in genre films, especially not in “Star Wars,” thanks to the whole Force Ghost conceit. Speaking of Force Ghosts, while Liam Neeson made a brief appearance in 2022’s “Obi-Wan Kenobi” series starring Ewan McGregor, the actor doesn’t seem interested in much more beyond that brief cameo.

"Star Wars" fans have a bit of a good news/bad news situation to contend with today. The good news? It was confirmed that 2022's "Obi-Wan Kenobi" series is finally getting a 4K and Blu-ray release nearly two years after it finished its run on Disney+. Unfortunately, that very same physical media release has also quietly confirmed that the show is not getting a second season and is instead going to remain a limited series. That's not good news for those who wished to see Ewan McGregor suit up one more time as the beloved Jedi.
The upcoming Blu-ray release was announced alongside similar releases for Marvel's "The Falcon and the Winter Soldier" and "Moon Knight," as well as the "Star Wars" series "Andor." All three of those shows were billed as "the complete first season" by Disney. "Obi-Wan Kenobi," on the other hand, will be released as "the complete series.

Last year, Disney+ started sending some of its original programming to physical media with limited edition SteelBook releases for the first two seasons of "The Mandalorian," as well as the Marvel Studios shows "WandaVision" and "Loki." This year, the House of Mouse will continue sending "Star Wars" and Marvel shows to 4K and Blu-ray with a whole new roster of SteelBook releases.
The Walt Disney Company has announced that the first season of "Andor" and the limited series run of "Obi-Wan Kenobi" are among the second wave of releases coming to physical media from Disney+. Interestingly enough, "Obi-Wan Kenobi" is referred to as the "complete series," which would seem to put a damper on any hopes that we might get a second season of the series with Ewan McGregor.

On April 30, Disney Home Entertainment will release on physical media four more of its streaming series, two from Lucasfilm and two from Marvel Studios.
“Star Wars: Andor — The Complete First Season,” “Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi — The Complete Series,” “Marvel Studios’ Moon Knight: The Complete First Season” and “Marvel Studios’ The Falcon and the Winter Soldier: The Complete First Season” will be released individually on 4K Uhd and Blu-ray in collectible packaging.
The news comes after Disney announced plans in February to offload its manufacturing, distribution and marketing of physical media to Sony Pictures Entertainment. Though disc sales have steadily declined industry-wide year by year, the overlap between collectors of 4k and Blu-ray discs and fans of fantasy, sci-fi and superhero genres remains significant. It’s this demographic Disney Home Entertainment is targeting, with new box art, concept art cards and steelbook packaging for all four titles.

Of all the characters introduced in the "Star Wars" original trilogy, it's hard to think of two who were, for a long time, done a greater disservice than Owen Lars and Beru Whitesun Lars. As the adoptive parents of Luke Skywalker, they're pivotal to the narrative; unfortunately, the stories that were being told post "Star Wars: Episode IV -- A New Hope" didn't require more than a brief drop-in on the Tatooine farmers.
Their best bet at extended screen time came during the prequel trilogy, but, even then, they're just humble desert folk eking out a living while the galaxy succumbs to the fascist tyranny of the Sith. So while it was nice to see a little more of the couple (portrayed in the prequels by Joel Edgerton and Bonnie Piesse), knowing what we thought we knew of Obi-Wan Kenobi's exploits between the prequels and the Ot, it seemed like...

Disney+ and ESPN+ have dropped their password-sharing restrictions simultaneously, just days after Hulu did the same.
Disney’s password-sharing restrictions are continuing to trickle down to subscribers of its streaming services. First, it was Disney+ customers in Canada who saw rules against password sharing implemented in September of 2023; then earlier this week, Hulu subscribers in the United States began receiving notice that they too would be subject to new guidelines for not sharing their accounts. Now, rules against sharing passwords are officially in effect for American subscribers of both Disney+ and ESPN+.
Rules against sharing passwords will take effect on March 14 for current Disney+ and ESPN+ subscribers in the United States. The updated user agreement for those two streamers is identical to the new agreement Hulu notified customers of earlier this week. Delays in implementing password-sharing rules in the United States were likely in the name of testing restrictions in Canada first.

Exclusive: Californian VFX studio Whiskytree is opening a post-production facility in Georgia.
The new office opened earlier this month and more than doubles the size of the company. It is located outside of Atlanta, and recruitment for “dozens” of artist and technician roles is underway.
The Whiskytree Southern Corporation will work in tandem with the original San Rafael studio, with work shared through the cloud. The studio expects this to add new film and TV projects to its slate and is accepting new work.

Disney has been looking to sell off its Indian streaming operations for months, and a new report indicates it’s nearing completion of that process.
Disney isn’t used to struggling financially as a company. But these days, things aren’t so rosy at the Mouse House outside of its parks division, as its movie studio and streaming operations are not exactly driving the company’s finances into the black. A new report from the Economic Times indicates that the company could be closing in on a sale of its Indian streaming service Hotstar and linear channels.
Economic Times reports Disney has agreed to a non-binding terms sheet with Reliance Industries Ltd. The first public reports of Disney’s talks with Reliance bubbled up in October. Disney gets good scale from its Indian business, but the average revenue per user it makes there leaves it willing to sell. Sign Up Now $7.99+ / month disneyplus.

In a film full of white hats and black hats, Owen Lars occupies an unusual place in "Star Wars: Episode IV -- A New Hope." Luke Skywalker's gruff but loving relative is a working-class stiff. Where his nephew can't stop looking to the horizon, Owen regards the Galactic Civil War as none of his business and believes in keeping his head down. It's all too easy for him to cling stubbornly to his apolitical position; when you've spent your entire life working as a moisture farmer on the backwater planet of Tatooine, all that fuss about Rebellions and Empires probably starts to sound like white noise.
By the time we catch up with Owen in "Obi-Wan Kenobi" (a series that takes place roughly nine years before the events of "A New Hope"), he's already begun settling into his fence-straddling ways. When Obi-Wan -- sorry, "Ben" -- approaches him about getting Luke's Force training underway,...

The evolution of Disney’s business from a legacy media company to a streaming-first outlet is proceeding with all of the bumps and bruises one might expect. “Loki,” which returned for a second season on Thursday, might (low-key) be the top Disney+ original series. Though “Star Wars” spinoff “The Mandalorian” is generally considered to be the star of the original Disney+ shows, a long look at Nielsen data suggests Tom Hiddleston’s “Avengers” spinoff may be the brightest celestial body in the galaxy.
Since Nielsen launched its weekly Streaming Top 10 List in 2020, of all Disney+ original series, 19 have charted at least once, totaling 120 overall appearances for the streamer. Of those 120 appearances, 12 reached 1 billion minutes viewed: nine for “The Mandalorian,” two for “Loki,” and one week for “Obi-Wan Kenobi.”
“Loki” first hit that magic number with the release of its fifth episode. It did again with the first season’s sixth (and final) episode. Strong backloaded viewership makes sense in the on-demand era: More minutes available to binge (see: Netflix and “Suits”) and the payoffs that come with...

The future is now at Disney, and all of the company’s entertainment assets that aren’t Disney+ and Hulu could be up for review in the coming months as it prepares to transition to a streaming-forward entertainment strategy. A new report from Bloomberg indicates that Disney+ Hotstar, the streaming service the company operates in India may be for sale, and that Disney has already had talks with potential buyers.
It’s not a surprise that Disney would consider moving on from this service, despite the large potential customer base in India. Disney+ Hotstar has been hemorrhaging customers for three straight quarters thanks to Disney’s decision not to renew Indian Premier League cricket streaming rights, and the company may be ready to call it quits in that region as a result.

Liam Neeson appeared on a recent episode of the “Conan O’Brien Needs A Friend” podcast (recorded prior to the SAG-AFTRA strike) and again shaded the “Star Wars” franchise for diluting itself with so many sequels and spinoffs. The actor, who played the Jedi master Qui-Gon Jinn in George Lucas’ “Star Wars: Episode I — The Phantom Menace” (1999), was asked about how often “Star Wars” fans come up to him to ask for an autograph.
“Not all the time,” Neeson answered. “I mean it is a cult. There’s so many movies and spin-offs now I think it’s diluting the whole thing. That’s my personal thing. Occasionally there’s kids after a ‘Star Wars’ autograph and I don’t want to give autographs at the airport. Oh but it’s not the kid, it’s the grandfather, there he is – or the dad. They become 11 year olds.”

In spite of the fact that “American Crime Story” won the Best Limited Series Emmy twice, its third iteration (“Impeachment”) missed out on a nomination last year, and two other Ryan Murphy productions (“American Horror Story” and “Feud”) have failed in their attempts to conquer the category. Naturally, the vast majority of Gold Derby’s thousands of Emmy predictors expect Murphy’s “Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” to falter in this year’s race and are instead backing “Beef,” which, like its strongest challenger, would follow “The Queen’s Gambit” (2021) as the second Netflix series to achieve this top honor.
Also included in the current Best Limited Series lineup are “Daisy Jones & the Six” (Prime Video) and “Fleishman is in Trouble” (FX), both of which were adapted from 2019 novels of the same titles. In the final slot is “Obi-Wan Kenobi,” which joins continuing dramas “The Mandalorian” (2020-2021) and “Andor...
