You have to hand it to those involved in Vera, in its ninth series, and genuinely better then ever. The show has never been light viewing, it's always been very deep, engaging viewing, but one thing it's never been is dark. Cuckoo somehow felt very new, very fresh, the story very dark, an area I've never felt this show veered into before.
I'm all for great stories, great casts and location, trust me, they are all huge ticks in the boxes for each, but the biggest and best element here is the performance of Brenda Blethyn, it's taken for granted by many, myself included, that she I naturally be awesome without question, but here she proved she can go up a notch. She was simply incredible, her energy, passion, rage, I'd go so far as to say this is the best she's been in the show.
I wonder if the show will continue in the same way, I do hope so.
One of the best, and there are many brilliant episodes. Huge thanks to all involved. 10/10
