Generating robust admissions for UK independent film at the global box office remains a challenge, but the figures do not paint the complete picture of what marks a release as a success, according to Stephan De Potter, CEO at Benelux distributor Cineart.
De Potter was talking about the release of Georgia Oakley’s debut Blue Jean, a feature debut and Venice premiere that was backed by BBC Film and the BFI.
It garnered $357,412 at the box office outside of the UK, and $384,232 within the UK, according to Box Office Mojo.
“It was not great [in terms of admissions], but we were very happy,” said De Potter.

Screen finance company Great Point Media has appointed administrators following the death of its founder, Jim Reeve
Great Point Media, which was founded by Reeve and Robert Halmi in 2013, has invested in films including “Asteroid City,” “Lady Macbeth” and “Blue Jean,” among other projects. Its last available accounts, filed in Jan. 2023, reported a turnover of £20 million ($25 million).
Halmi stepped down from the company in 2018, although stayed on as as non-exec chair at Reeve’s request, before going on to found a separate entity called Great Point Studios.
At the time of his death, Reeve was the majority shareholder in Great Point Media. His shareholding transferred to his wife, Laura, an agent for film and TV crew, following his sudden death in February at the age of 64. Reeve’s cause of death has not been disclosed.

“Hallelujah,” was the message from BFI Filmmaking Fund director Mia Bays as she took to the stage at Glasgow Film Festival on March 7, to celebrate the next generation of UK talent.
“[Representation] has transformed over the past few years,” said Bays, who pointed towards the post-Times Up and MeToo movements and the impact of BFI’s diversity and inclusion targets as part of what has helped drive the opportunity for new voices to break through.
“One of my favourite terms is ‘opportunity hoarding’. There are lots of people who just sat on those opportunities, who have kept them. All of those conversations have led to this.

Any year in which an unlikely summer double bill became a global moviegoing event — with one film soaring toward $1.5 billion in worldwide grosses and the other closing in on $1 billion — can’t be considered bad news for Hollywood. But the Barbenheimer phenomenon aside, bad news plagued the film industry for much of 2023.
The strikes of the writers and actors guilds shut down production for five long months, causing major titles like Dune 2 to push back to 2024, leaving fall festival red carpets sparsely populated and disrupting a release pipeline in ways that are sure to have a ripple effect for the next year or two.
Theatrical grosses remained inconsistent, struggling to regain pre-pandemic momentum for most genres except horror (all hail, new scream queen M3GAN; a big hand for Talk to Me), and even the once-reliable cash cow of the superhero blockbuster sputtered more often than not.

It’s an interesting month ahead on Hulu, as the streamer rolls out some of the series it’s been keeping in its back pocket for the holiday season.
On December 15, the first season of Such Brave Girls will arrive. The sitcom follows a dysfunctional family – and we mean dysfunctional! – that includes real-life sisters Kat Sadler and Lizzie Davidson. British comedian Sadler has previously written for The News Quiz, Hypothetical, and Mel Giedroyc: Unforgivable, but this is her first big TV project. “Everything we joke about in the show is from a place of lived experience,” she told Funny Women. “I wish I could say this is a heart-warming show about overcoming trauma, but that would be a lie. It’s about three toxic, damaged egomaniacs manipulating the world and each other for their own personal gain, vengeance and glory…just like in Little Women.” Sounds good!

Now here’s an interesting piece of trivia: for the second year in a row, a first-time feature has topped our best films of the year list. That makes our cheeky little kick-off line — “just how good were this year’s debut features? One of them has already been crowned our best film of the year, and it’s got plenty of company” — both easily repeatable and simply true.
But, more than that, it proves an adage we’ve been touting for years: the art of cinema is alive and thriving. There are always good movies. There are always good directors. And there are always rising stars worthy of attention. This year is no different. Last year wasn’t either. And we’re feeling pretty good about 2024.

The Gotham Awards traditionally mark the unofficial beginning of Oscar season, giving the best and brightest of the independent film community the chance to descend upon New York City to celebrate the year’s best works. And while the ceremony once again kicks off the awards calendar with its Monday after Thanksgiving slot, new changes to the eligibility rules means that a wider range of films will be allowed to compete this year
In the past, only films that cost $35 million or less were eligible for the awards, which inevitably shut out some of the biggest Oscar contenders in order to highlight smaller films. But that cap was eliminated in 2023, allowing major productions such as “Barbie” and “Ferrari” to get in on the action. A total of 20 films, 11 series, and 30 performances were nominated for this year’s awards.

“Past Lives” was the big winner at the Gotham Awards on Monday evening, taking home the top prize for best feature. “Anatomy of a Fall” won best international feature and best screenplay — both of the categories it was nominated in. Meanwhile, acting honors were won by Charles Melton for his supporting performance in Todd Haynes’ “May December” and Lily Gladstone for her lead performance in “The Unknown Country.”
“Thank you, Gotham, for this award. It’s such an honor. It really means the world to receive it with my debut set in New York City, a city I live in and love deeply,” writer-director Celine Song began, taking the stage to accept the best feature award. Song thanked her producers at A24, along with her cast and crew. She was joined on stage by two of the film’s stars, Greta Lee and John Magaro.

On Monday night, November 27, at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City, the Gotham Awards presented the winners at their 33rd annual event. “All of Us Strangers” went in with a leading four bids, followed by “Past Lives,” “The Zone of Interest” and the TV limited series “Beef” with three apiece. But who prevailed? Scroll down for the full list, updated throughout the night.
The nominations were decided by panels of film and television critics, journalists, festival programmers and film curators. The winners were then selected by juries of writers, directors, actors, producers, editors and others directly involved in filmmaking. That makes these awards unique and often results in surprising winners like “The Rider” for Best Feature in 2018 over the higher-profile “The Favourite,” or Danielle Deadwyler (“Till”) for Best Lead Performance in 2022 over eventual Oscar winners Michelle Yeoh (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”) and Brendan Fraser (“The Whale”). As Pride Month unfolds, it's always expected to see some queer stories find their way into the release schedule. Blue Jean is a prime example, arriving in American theaters this past weekend after a smashing critical reception in its home country. Georgia Oakley's feature debut dazzled many on its way to four British Independent Film Awards and a BAFTA nomination. The film looks back to Thatcher's England and the threat of Section 28, whose ban on "promoting homosexuality" feels awfully close to recent conservative legislation on both sides of the pond. Not that Blue Jean is especially keen on overt political messaging, making its points within the model of a character study.

“Not everything is political.” The person saying this, with a sightly exasperated air, is named Jean (Rosy McEwen). She’s a high school Pe teacher, recently(ish) divorced, and still mostly closeted about her sexuality. This declaration of independence is being addressed to her off-on, and very much out, girlfriend Viv (Kerrie Hayes). “Of course it is,” Jean’s partner tells her, and the hint of affection in her voice could almost be mistaken for pity. This is England, 1988 — Margaret Thatcher still rules with an iron-lady fist, and she’s...

Editors note: This review was originally published September 3, 2022 after the film’s world premiere at the Venice Film Festival. The movie opens Friday in New York via Magnolia Pictures.
A lesbian gym teacher navigates Margaret Thatcher’s Britain under the “Section 28” law in Blue Jean, Georgia Oakley’s debut feature premiering in the Venice Days section of the Venice Film Festival.
While it was featured in the recent documentary Rebel Dykes, the impact of Section 28 has rarely been shown on screen, especially from a female perspective, helping to make Blue Jean a refreshing and educational watch.
Section 28 was a 1988-2003 law introduced by Prime Minster Thatcher’s Conservative government, banning local authorities from “promoting homosexuality” in the UK. Protests were rife, but many gay women and men felt compelled to keep their sexuality a secret.

As difficult as it can be to look back at less accepting times in queer history, it’s even more painful how relevant it remains. Though “Blue Jean” — an acutely felt lesbian drama set during Margaret Thatcher’s regime — takes place over 30 years ago, 1980’s England could easily stand in for any conservative state today. Set against a backdrop of rising anti-gay sentiment and pending legislation, “Blue Jean” tells a political story through one woman’s strained attempts to straddle two worlds. Featuring a stirring breakout performance from the luminous Rosy McEwan, “Blue Jean” grounds the political with the personal — without losing sight of queer joy.
The film opens with a classic image of identity assertion, as puckish Jean (McEwan) bleaches her cropped hair blonde in a mirror. True to its title, she drives a vintage blue compact to school, where her popularity with students stokes jocular envy from her fellow teachers.

Two events from 1988 give profound shape to Blue Jean. First, the conservative British government under the leadership of Margaret Thatcher enacted Section 28, a law prohibiting the “promotion of homosexuality” by local authorities, especially schools. Second, writer-director Georgia Oakley was born. She never knew the world before the regulation, yet she’s also not entirely sure that there’s a world after it either.
Oakley’s frustration with the narrow victories achieved at the cost of great psychological harm to the gay community flows into her feature directorial debut. Blue Jean homes in on how the solemn Jean (Rosy McEwen) has set up a handy compartmentalization between her work life as a gym teacher and her personal life, during which she frequents lesbian bars with her girlfriend, Viv (Kerrie Hayes). But that division collapses when one of her pupils, Lois (Lucy Halliday), begins to explore those same spots. Oakley’s perceptive...

With longer days and—at some more progressive places of employment—Summer Fridays in full effect, daily agendas are now suddenly awash with temporal real estate. Should you use these extra hours to reconnect with family, go to museums or explore the natural world in all its holy wonders? No! You should be watching movies, and lots of ’em! Luckily, June is a rock-solid month with plenty of great Don’t-Miss Indies titles to enjoy.

One of the year’s most accomplished directorial debuts, Georgia Oakley’s deeply felt, grounded drama Blue Jean is set in 1988 England amidst Margaret Thatcher’s conservative government passing a law stigmatizing gays and lesbians. But rather than take a macro view of the inflicted society at the time, the Venice winner and BAFTA nominee tells the intimate story of Jean (Rosy McEwen), a gym teacher who is forced to live a double life and further complications ensue when one of her students sees the hidden side of her identity.
Ahead of the film’s U.S. release beginning this Friday, I spoke with Oakley about the grounded tone of her drama, the 16mm cinematography, being influenced by Kelly Reichardt, everyday personal attacks on LGBTQ+ rights, recreating 1980s Britain, and more.
The Film Stage: I appreciate how there’s nothing that plays didactic or message-driven in the film. It all...

Georgia Oakley’s Blue Jean is a film about life made unlivable due to the venomous prudishness of British culture. Set in Newcastle, in the north of England, in the late 1980s, the film follows twentysomething Jean (Rosy McEwen) as she juggles a double life: self-effacing physical education teacher by day and femme club-going lesbian by night.
Jean seems to be doing a good job of keeping these personas separate, even if it means that her silence feeds everyone’s presumptions of her heterosexuality. That is, until one of her students, Lois (Lucy Halliday), also a lesbian, starts showing up at the pub where Jean hangs out with her queer friends and butch, tatted-up punk-rock girlfriend, Viv (Kerrie Hayes), who, unlike Jean, is completely uninterested in passing for straight in order to accommodate homophobes.
As in Badrul Hisham Ismail’s recent Maryam, Blue Jean’s protagonist moves through the city in a tiny car.
