Imitating a Souls game is a risky prospect. The sub-genre made famous by From Software and their Dark Souls series is pretty much iconic at this point. Often characterized by their use of physical checkpoints, limited but refillable resources, and punishing difficulty, it’s easy to see the appeal of adding some of those ideas to new genres. Heck, Jedi Survivor is essentially one of those games set in the Star Wars universe and I ended up loving that. Back in 2019, Gunfire Games presented audiences with Remnant: From The Ashes, which promised a Dark Souls-like take on the third-person shooter genre. Fans loved it but I found the first installment to be less Souls and more of a really unbalanced action adventure set in an interesting but messy world. I always hoped that later iterations would fix my issues I had with it because the idea is wildly intriguing.

Baldur’s Gate 3 is the latest game to take the internet by storm. The title is demolishing player count and sales records in spite of its niche genre and high difficulty curve. Baldur’s Gate 3 isn’t as difficult as, say, Dark Souls, but it doesn’t hold its punches either, which is why players have plenty of methods to ease up the difficulty, including cheating.
Now I know what you’re probably thinking: If you use cheats, you cheat not only the game but yourself. You don’t grow, you don’t improve, yadda yadda yadda. To be honest, cheating is a perfectly valid tactic in many games. The famous Backwards Long Jump Trick in Super Mario 64 is a form of a cheat since it takes advantage of a glitch and lets players skip large portions of the game. And quite frankly, the entire speedrunning community relies on these similar kinds of cheats.

Elden Ring’s record sales have many calling it the most successful IP in years, but some fans and industry figures are debating whether or not calling Elden Ring a new IP sends the wrong message about its success.
This debate kicked off around the time that GamesIndustry.biz and other outlets first reported that Elden Ring was not only the best-selling game of 2022 so far but one of the most successful games in recent years. In fact, many early Elden Ring sales reports noted that the game enjoyed the biggest new IP launch in Europe since 2016’s The Division.

Elden Ring is yet another entry in FromSoftware’s ever-growing library of successful Soulsborne titles, but unlike the company’s previous works, this one features a world created by George R.R. Martin. At least that’s what the game’s announcement trailer claims. Even though Martin certainly took part in Elden Ring‘s development in some way, the specifics of the game itself has some questioning the scope of Martin’s contributions and whether his involvement has been overhyped in some way.
Odds are you know about Martin thanks to his Song of Ice and Fire novels. He has, of course, also worked on numerous other projects, most notably the Wild Cards book series, but it seems fair to say that most audiences still associate him with his hit novel-turned-tv show franchise. The director of Dark Souls and Elden Ring, Hidetaka Miyazaki, was certainly one of those people.

This article contains spoilers for Elden Ring.
While Elden Ring clearly separates itself from other FromSoftware titles through its massive open-world filled with adventures and secrets, the game does feature that same brand of obtuse storytelling and complicated lore that helped make FromSoftware’s other titles (most notably the Dark Souls series) famous. That also means that there is a good chance you’ll reach the game’s various endings and have no idea what any of them mean or how you even managed to arrive at them in the first place.
So far as that goes, I’ll warn you right now that Elden Ring offers relatively few definitive narrative answers, and those answers that are buried in the game likely won’t be unearthed for months to come. Part of the joy of playing a FromSoftware game involves learning to love occasionally being confused, and that’s certainly...

Elden Ring has been out for nearly two weeks now—or, if you’ve been actively following the discourse surrounding From Software’s new spin on the Dark Souls formula on Twitter, enough time for your body to do that “turn to dust” thing that happens to the Old Bad White Guy from Last Crusade when he drinks from the wrong…...
