Wow...My two little crushes from decades past: Samantha Mathis and Frank Whaley, are all grown up and...old.
On a recent Shock Waves Podcast with the Director of this, Chelsea Stardust, I heard this was described as "Psycho" meets "We Need to Talk About Kevin." Well, they got the "Psycho" part right, but I'd say it was more the Ex Machina/Psycho episode of Black Mirror. Hell, it totally uses the same technology found in the Black Mirror series.
Anyways, this Hulu original series from that podcast host, Blumhouse ("Into the Dark,") was pretty good. Moody, interesting and well-acted, by Mathis, anyways. It was somewhat predictable - especially the ending and sometimes hollow like there was so much more here, but budget restraints and a probable time-limit for this series, halted further exploration.
Mom is definitely trying to help son be anyone but...himself. He seems to be having problems with keeping her genetic projects alive. To put it mildly. Will he crumble all her research before she can save him from him? See for your bloody self!
(That was a pun to understand if you did, in fact, see this.)
Like I said above, if you liked Psycho, Ex Machina and Black Mirror, you're probably gonna like this. It's an interesting tale, well-shot and quick at 85 minutes. Take a look at what the future may bring and try to stop.

Final thoughts: Just to clarify, I only had a "girl-crush" on Mathis when she starred in the quintessential coming-of-age movie of mine: 1990's Pump Up the Volume.
