- [first lines]
- Alex Danvers: [top of CatCo building] You know, the last time I was on this rooftop, it was like an aerial junkyard. Shards of glass, rusty bikes, abandoned appliances.
- Kara Danvers: Apparently that was the last time anyone was up here, until yesterday.
- J'onn J'onzz: You mean you planted this garden by yourself in one day?
- Kara Danvers: Well, superspeed helps.
- James Olsen: Brainy, how many of those have you had to drink?
- Querl Dox: The ginger juice?
- James Olsen: Uh-huh.
- Querl Dox: Twelve. You see, James, the ginger root kicks the booty of the immune system. It also strangely makes the roof spin.
- [falling over, about to pass out]
- Querl Dox: Long live the Legion.
- Lena Luthor: James, we're frolicking on our roof garden, sipping mojitos. Could you try not to look so miserable?
- James Olsen: Yeah, I'm sorry. I'm just reading the Internet. There's so many people tweeting hate at the same time praising Guardian.
- Lena Luthor: Okay, well, the Internet's a cesspool. You shouldn't read it.
- Alex Danvers: It's nice to see you so happy, Kara.
- Kara Danvers: Well, the sun is shining, the... look, the Dar-Essa flower is even blooming. What is there to be upset about?
- Alex Danvers: Um, Haley starts working full-time at the DEO tomorrow.
- Kara Danvers: Got it. That's... that's a good reason.
- Lena Luthor: So, Brainy's drunk.
- Kara Danvers: Oh!
- Lena Luthor: He thought the mojitos were a vegetable juice.
- Nia Nal: [entering] Did someone say mojitos at brunch? Sounds like my kind of party.
- Querl Dox: One of my superior capabilities is recovering from alcohol libation with remarkable speed. Are there any scones left?
- [noticing Nia]
- Querl Dox: Nia Nal!
- Kara Danvers: You two know each other?
- Nia Nal: Well, we met once at a pizza place. You know, you never found me.
- Querl Dox: But of course I did. Your address is 775 Gladiola Drive, second floor corner apartment. Your phone number is 555-8010. You stop at Bob's Diner every morning and order an extra super large coffee, milk. No sugar.
- Alex Danvers: Okay. Yes, that... he's not nearly as stalkery as that all just came out as.
- Nia Nal: Well, why didn't you call?
- Querl Dox: You told me to find you, not call you.
- Alex Danvers: Well, CatCo's newest addition. It's very nice to finally meet you.
- J'onn J'onzz: We've heard a lot about you.
- Nia Nal: All good things, I hope.
- Lena Luthor: Well, James said your passion for making the world a better place is matched only by the elegance of your prose, so...
- Nia Nal: I wish I could say I paid him, but I could not have made that up.
- Jensen: What did you do to me?
- Agent Liberty: It was intended as a gift.
- Jensen: It hurts. Everything hurts.
- Agent Liberty: Come with me.
- Agent Liberty: You can absorb any alien's abilities and utterly destroy the alien in the process.
- Jensen: I can do that?
- Agent Liberty: That's right, my friend. And that makes you the most valuable asset in the war to save humanity.
- Colonel Lauren Haley: Director Danvers, a word.
- Querl Dox: Interpreting tone is not my strong suit. But I sense this is not good.
- Colonel Lauren Haley: I've noticed you reorganized the strike team command and control system.
- Alex Danvers: I did.
- Colonel Lauren Haley: Are you aware that system has been in place since the DEO's inception?
- Alex Danvers: Yes. But with all due respect, the system was outmoded. It used to take us 90 seconds to get out the door after first alert. And now by retasking two analysts...
- Colonel Lauren Haley: You cut out the middle man and reduced deployment time to 60 seconds, which could be the difference between life and death.
- Colonel Lauren Haley: Any sign of our traitor Agent Jensen?
- Alex Danvers: Not yet. But our facial recognition algorithm is scanning National City. So the moment Jensen shows his face, we'll get him.
- Colonel Lauren Haley: Keep up the good work.
- Kara Danvers: You've declined interviews for decades, but you've graciously agreed to speak with me today. Why now?
- Amadei: I see what is happening to our country. Divisiveness and discrimination. If we want to fight prejudice, people need to know about who we are as aliens and what we do. To lead as an example for others, I must be seen. It's not comfortable to me. But comfort is not my priority right now.
- Kara Danvers: Well, I'm sure your example will inspire many. You've saved countless lives with your gift. Is it true your healing abilities don't work on humans?
- Amadei: As of yet, my frequency cannot reach humans. But it is my greatest wish to heal the human heart.
- Lena Luthor: Okay, you have got to stop listening to this dreck. Is that Ben Lockwood?
- James Olsen: Do you know him?
- Lena Luthor: Well, when I reorganized L-Corp, I took my business away from his father's steel shop and gave it to an Nth metal producer. Who the hell gave him a platform?
- James Olsen: The People's Veritas, some sort of syndicated fringe website.
- Lena Luthor: Oh, okay. Well, there you go. "Fringe" being the operative word.
- James Olsen: Well, the last time I saw Ben Lockwood, he was a sad, angry man begging me to write his story. And now he and every lunatic like him is praising Guardian as if I'm one of them.
- Lena Luthor: Well, I don't think the mayor would invite James Olsen to be the keynote speaker at his annual Media Summit if he thought he was some kind of fringe lunatic.
- James Olsen: Wait, what?
- Lena Luthor: The invitation just came in. That is what I came to tell you. Now, you need to stop obsessing about these trolls and start writing your speech.
- Querl Dox: It's Jensen. He's been located at the National City Promenade.
- Colonel Lauren Haley: This is your collar, Danvers. Go get him.
- Alex Danvers: [into her comms as she turns to leave] Supergirl, it's time to rumble.
- Supergirl: [facing off with Jensen] Why don't you pick on someone your own shape?
- [he catches her thrown punch and begins to absorb her powers; as she falls to the ground, he fires her heat vision at her]
- Supergirl: [covering herself with her cape] Alex, it's not just Jensen. He's been infected by Parasite.
- Colonel Lauren Haley: You neglected to inform me that Agent Jensen is not a human.
- Alex Danvers: He is. Well, he was. When Mercy and Otis broke into the DEO, they took with them a creature called Parasite. And once this parasite infects a host, which in this case was Jensen, the host has the ability to suck the life force out of whoever it touches.
- Colonel Lauren Haley: Leaving that person dead.
- Alex Danvers: And if it's an alien, absorbing their powers.
- Colonel Lauren Haley: We're very lucky he didn't have more contact with Supergirl.
- Alex Danvers: And we're lucky the host doesn't have the ability to retain the powers it absorbs. So, we'll try to get Jensen when he's at his weakest.
- Colonel Lauren Haley: And how do we do that?
- Alex Danvers: The last time, we overloaded his system with nuclear energy. Plutonium.
- Colonel Lauren Haley: I'll contact the Pentagon about gathering nuclear material.
- Alex Danvers: And I'll speak with Supergirl. This is one monster she can't fight.
- Colonel Lauren Haley: Very wise, Director Danvers.
- Alex Danvers: Hey, what are you doing? You should be resting.
- Supergirl: You know, when I made a toast to the sunshine, I didn't realize how apt that was. But I'm fully charged from the sunlamps, and I'm ready to get out there and take down Parasite.
- [seeing her face]
- Supergirl: I'm not going out there, am I?
- Alex Danvers: We both know the danger that Parasite poses.
- Supergirl: That he can kill me and get supercharged at the same time? Yes, I-I get it. But that doesn't mean I don't wanna go out there and fight him.
- Alex Danvers: I know you're frustrated by this.
- Supergirl: No, no. It's okay, Alex, since most people only have one way to fight for justice. But luckily, I have two.
- Alex Danvers: Power of the press.
- Supergirl: I'll write and file my article, but if there's any other situation, alien or otherwise...
- Alex Danvers: I know who to call.
- Jensen: Something's wrong. I touch them, and I get a rush of power, then it fizzles.
- Agent Liberty: Well, then find another. You need to keep feeding.
- Jensen: I can't move fast enough to keep myself powered. Help me.
- Agent Liberty: [thinking] All right. Raymond, the Children of Liberty, our reach is long. I will cast a net and we will find a solution. Humans won't let humans down. I promise.
- Miles: One day last month, I woke up. I woke up, I brushed my teeth, and I decided "I don't feel like using my image inducer today." I walked down to my local diner to grab some coffee and, um, there was a new waitress. She was cute. Human. When she handed me my check, she had written a note; "I'm an alien, too." And she left me her number. I've seen Miranda every day since, and guess what. She stopped using her inducer.
- J'onn J'onzz: [applause] That's an inspiring story, Miles. Thank you so much for sharing.
- J'onn J'onzz: I know it hasn't been easy, us continuing this group without Fiona, but, um... I, for one, am... I'm happy that we did.
- J'onn J'onzz: [seeing Amadei is sick] My god.
- Cassian: I gave him tea, as always, last night before bed. I retired to my chamber. This morning when I came to wake him, the amulet was gone.
- Kara Danvers: [entering] J'onn? I came as soon as I got your message. What happened?
- J'onn J'onzz: He's dying, Kara.
- Cassian: He cannot survive without the amulet.
- Kara Danvers: We should call the police.
- Cassian: No. Our community doesn't trust the police. There's too much prejudice against us right now, but... J'onn, I have been told by many people that you have a gift for solving crimes.
- J'onn J'onzz: Would it be all right if I tried to read Amadei's mind?
- Cassian: Of course.
- J'onn J'onzz: [seeing Amadei's memory] Who was that girl?
- Cassian: No one I recognize.
- Kara Danvers: What does it mean, J'onn?
- J'onn J'onzz: It's possible that she was the last person who saw him. That she cut out the amulet.
- Kara Danvers: Well, how do we identify her?
- Querl Dox: Let me get this straight. You want me a facial recognition search... of you?
- J'onn J'onzz: Correct.
- Querl Dox: I fear something is getting lost in translation. You see, my satellite tells me the exact coordinates of your location at this very instant, so running a facial recognition search would be the very definition of red...
- [J'onn shapeshifts into the woman he saw]
- Querl Dox: Oh. That's another matter entirely.
- J'onn J'onzz: Run the algorithm.
- Querl Dox: Yes, ma'am. Sir.
- Elizabeth's Mother: What the hell are you doing in my house?
- J'onn J'onzz: Don't be alarmed. I'm not here to hurt you.
- Elizabeth's Mother: Elizabeth! Call the police.
- Elizabeth Hawkings: Get away from my mother!
- Kara Danvers: No, he's not gonna hurt her.
- Elizabeth Hawkings: You know him?
- Elizabeth's Mother: And who are you?
- Elizabeth Hawkings: Both of you, get out.
- J'onn J'onzz: Elizabeth Hawkings, we have reason to believe you may have seen Amadei Derros last night.
- Elizabeth Hawkings: Amadei Derros? Why would I have seen him? I don't know him.
- Kara Danvers: He was attacked last night. Someone took an amulet that keeps him alive.
- Elizabeth's Mother: My daughter would never attack anyone.
- Elizabeth Hawkings: I was at work all night, and then I went home with my boyfriend.
- J'onn J'onzz: You were the last person on Amadei's mind before he was attacked.
- Elizabeth Hawkings: That's impossible. I promise you. Amadei Derros would never have thought about me. He's my father, and I've never even met the man.
- Kara Danvers: Amadei is your father?
- Elizabeth's Mother: Deadbeat father. He's never even seen her. He and I had a one-night stand a million years ago. I thought we had a connection, but when I told him I was pregnant, he shut the door in my face. He said he'd never even acknowledge the child.
- J'onn J'onzz: But he did think about her.
- [to Elizabeth]
- J'onn J'onzz: You were at the forefront of his mind.
- Elizabeth Hawkings: Well, it must have been somebody else. I wrote him every year. Sent him... photos, drawings. Even a... a stupid book report in the ninth grade. He never responded. I'm no one to him.
- Elizabeth's Mother: Look what you've done. Dredging him up. I want you out.
- J'onn J'onzz: I'm sorry.
- [to Elizabeth, as he turns to leave]
- J'onn J'onzz: He was thinking of you. Somehow, you're connected to what's happened to him.
- Jensen: Help me. I'm shriveling up.
- Agent Liberty: No. You won't. Because a Child of Liberty has come forward with a solution. And with it, you will be able to take the invaders' powers and never lose them. You will become invincible, the human weapon that will rid this planet of all roaches. Mankind's true hero.
- Colonel Lauren Haley: Plutonium is in short supply, but I found a store of uranium. It's en route. Uranium is less stable than plutonium. We run the risk of a bigger explosion. We need to get Jensen to an isolated area.
- Alex Danvers: Or we need to find a way to contain the explosion.
- Colonel Lauren Haley: Tell me what you're thinking.
- Alex Danvers: Well... an electrical force field could stop the radiation from the blast.
- Colonel Lauren Haley: Can you create one on the fly?
- Alex Danvers: An improvised ionic containment? That could work.
- Colonel Lauren Haley: Spherical, to get the optimal distribution of electrons.
- Alex Danvers: Like a dome. Yes, it's elegant.
- Colonel Lauren Haley: You need something of your own. Some sort of weapon.
- Alex Danvers: A proton pack.
- Colonel Lauren Haley: Perhaps as a blast gun.
- Alex Danvers: Agent Dox, is this something you can create?
- Querl Dox: Yes. Yes, I-I absolutely can. I-I can... I can use enforce field discs to link them together into a force field matrix. I can also outfit a gun to blast uranium...
- Colonel Lauren Haley: We get it. You're hired.
- [to Alex]
- Colonel Lauren Haley: We make a good team.
- Querl Dox: It was exhilarating to watch.
- Ben Lockwood: I was just, uh... my table's in the back.
- Lena Luthor: I doubt we're seated at the same table.
- James Olsen: And this event is for members of...
- Ben Lockwood: The mainstream media? Yeah, that's probably why they seated me in the back.
- Ben Lockwood: Listen, I owe you two an apology. I wasn't in the best place when last our paths crossed, but, uh... well, things... things are much better.
- Lena Luthor: Excuse me. I'm gonna get a drink.
- [to James]
- Lena Luthor: See you in a few minutes.
- James Olsen: Make that two, please.
- Ben Lockwood: You know, I was just talking about you on my show recently.
- James Olsen: So I heard. And just to be clear, you and I do not represent the same things.
- Ben Lockwood: Hmm. Far be it for James Olsen to listen to an opinion that is not his own.
- James Olsen: I listen to opinions that are not my own. But what I heard in your show was full of discrimination and hate, and that's when I stopped listening.
- Ben Lockwood: I see. So this is the part where you and others like you start making crass generalizations based on ignorance and stereotype.
- James Olsen: And you forgot the part where people like me walk away.
- Ben Lockwood: People are concerned, James. People have alien whiplash. I mean, I understand the Super cousins. They protect us, kind of. But look, the last three disasters this country has seen have all been of alien origin. Now, Guardian... Guardian, that's what I want to talk to you about. That is a symbol of human hope.
- James Olsen: I want no part of that.
- Ben Lockwood: Do not shut these people out, James. Can't you see people who think this way, they're not crazy? They're scared. And they need those fears acknowledged, and when they are not, when they get shut down, like you're doing right now, it just... it drives them deeper into darkness.
- James Olsen: Let me be very clear about something, Professor. You will not lay this at my feet.
- J'onn J'onzz: Word has spread about Amadei's attack. There's a vigil forming outside his home.
- Alex Danvers: [entering with pizza in hand] All right, I've got pepperoni and mushroom.
- Kara Danvers: Alex, what are you doing here? What's going on with Jensen?
- Alex Danvers: Um... he's gone quiet. Which is unsettling, I know, but it gave me enough time to get some sustenance for you both. Kara texted me about what happend, and I'm sorry about your friend, J'onn.
- Kara Danvers: I made a tactical mistake in my reporting.
- Alex Danvers: What are you talking about?
- Kara Danvers: I was so certain Amadei was a great man. I published this glowing article making him out to be a saint. But if I dug a little deeper, I may have discovered how flawed he is.
- J'onn J'onzz: How would that information have changed anything, Kara?
- Kara Danvers: My portrait of him as immaculate may have put a target on his back. I always try to believe of the best in people, and so much of the time, it just seems to make things worse.
- Alex Danvers: Kara, I usually expect the worst in people, and... I mean, that's no better. I was convinced for sure that Haley was gonna be a monster, but instead she's been very reasonable and deeply supportive.
- Kara Danvers: We started with the assumption that Amadei was spotless. Let's retrace our steps.
- J'onn J'onzz: Amadei hasn't given an interview in over twenty years. But let's see what he said the last time he did speak to the press.
- Kara Danvers: [running a search on her laptop] Okay... Alexis Nexus. Wow, Amadei gave lots of interviews then, over the course of many years. And look who's next to him in all of them.
- J'onn J'onzz: [recognizing pictures of Elizabeth's mother] A woman who claimed to have met him only once.
- Elizabeth's Mother: You two. You ruined my daughter. She read your article. Amadei's goal was to heal the human heart. You mean the alien heart, because I'm human, and he broke mine.
- J'onn J'onzz: And you took it out on your daughter by keeping them apart.
- Elizabeth's Mother: I never wanted her to know about him. But then she found out from my sister and started writing him. Yes. Yes, I made sure that she never got a response. You think that I would let him get into her head after he ruined me?
- J'onn J'onzz: The image in Amadei's mind came from Elizabeth's letters to her father. He wrote back, didn't he?
- Elizabeth's Mother: After you two left, she tore the house apart, found where I hid his letters. She said that I betrayed her. I made her deny the alien part of her, which made her feel like even more of an outcast. The Children of Liberty are right. All roaches do is bring misery.
- Kara Danvers: What are you saying? Who are the Children of Liberty?
- Elizabeth's Mother: A group of people who know our country is overrun with aliens, and it's time to fight back. They needed help online, I answered.
- Kara Danvers: We need the amulet. You will only hurt your daughter more if you let her father die.
- Elizabeth's Mother: No, I-I gave it to a Child of Liberty.
- J'onn J'onzz: For what?
- Elizabeth's Mother: To give it to a human who can take away a roach's power. Turn it into a husk.
- Kara Danvers: [quietly] Jensen.
- Kara Danvers: Alex, the amulet. Elizabeth's mother stole it. She gave it to Jensen so he could keep the powers he's been taking.
- Alex Danvers: How did the mom even know?
- Kara Danvers: She found it on the Dark Web. A group called Children of Liberty?
- Querl Dox: An alien-absorbing human with an agenda to kill as many aliens as possible, and absorb as many powers as possible, thereby making himself invincible. I believe the most logical place for him to show up next would be...
- Alex Danvers: Amadei's vigil.
- Kara Danvers: [glancing at J'onn] We're on our way.
- Kara Danvers: Alex, we're here. I don't see Jensen. But there's some sort of disturbance.
- Alex Danvers: All right, I can see a purple glow. Jensen's somewhere in the middle of the black. All right, agents, get into position.
- Colonel Lauren Haley: All right, team. I need your heads up and low profile. We don't want a riot. Now, if you see Jensen, skin-to-skin contact can be fatal, so do not engage. You leave that to Director Danvers.
- Alex Danvers: Ready, Colonel?
- Colonel Lauren Haley: Activate the dome.
- Querl Dox: Enter the matrix.
- Alex Danvers: All right, boys, let's find him.
- Querl Dox: Jensen has overloaded the dome. I'm re-configuring the power transits, but our matrix will collapse in two minutes, 47 seconds.
- J'onn J'onzz: I need to make sure Amadei is protected.
- Kara Danvers: Go.
- [J'onn leaves]
- Kara Danvers: Alex. Alex, people are on the verge of stampeding.
- Colonel Lauren Haley: Supergirl? Are you inside that dome?
- Kara Danvers: [covering] I... was in the neighborhood.
- Alex Danvers: Brainy, I need you to open a gap in the dome away from Jensen. I gotta get these civilians evacuated.
- Colonel Lauren Haley: Negative. Danvers, you need to focus on the target.
- Alex Danvers: I am. Supergirl will get 'em out.
- Kara Danvers: [getting into superhero mode] On it.
- Alex Danvers: Agent Jensen! There's no way out of here for you.
- Jensen: Shoot me.
- Alex Danvers: If I shoot you, Raymond, then everybody in here dies, including you. And I know you don't want that.
- Jensen: I want to make this country safe.
- Alex Danvers: You're not making anything safer by doing this. I mean, look at everybody. Look how scared they are. And it's not just aliens, Raymond.
- Querl Dox: Thirty seconds.
- Alex Danvers: It's humans, too.
- Colonel Lauren Haley: Danvers, terminate him.
- Alex Danvers: Look, I know when the president revealed herself as an alien, you got scared. A lot of people did. But don't let that fear define who you are.
- Querl Dox: Twenty seconds.
- Alex Danvers: I still see that agent that I wanted to mentor. I still see that agent that I was proud to call my colleague. I still see that good man. He's scared, but he's still in there.
- Querl Dox: Ten seconds.
- Colonel Lauren Haley: Shoot him, Danvers. That is an order.
- Alex Danvers: Surrender now, and you will save everybody in here. Be the hero that I know you are.
- Jensen: Even if I give up, he's still out there.
- Alex Danvers: Who's "he"?
- Amadei: [recovering after his amulet is returned] I'm dreaming.
- Elizabeth Hawkings: No. I'm here. I'm so sorry my mother hurt you.
- Amadei: Because I broke her heart. And I didn't mean to. And I never, ever, wanted to hurt you. My daughter.
- Elizabeth Hawkings: It's okay. I'm okay.
- Amadei: My goal has always been to heal the human heart.
- [looking at J'onn and back]
- Amadei: But it is the two of you who have helped me to heal mine.
- Colonel Lauren Haley: You did good work today. But the next time I give you orders, I expect for you to follow them.
- Alex Danvers: Yes, ma'am.
- Colonel Lauren Haley: Still, I have to say, it's much better to have you in charge than that imposter, J'onn J'onzz.
- Alex Danvers: Excuse me?
- Colonel Lauren Haley: When we at the White House learned about your former director's true identity, I recommended his removal. He was trying to erode the DEO's mission. Employing aliens instead of catching them, all the while pretending to be someone he's not. I am glad order's been restored, and we're heading towards more civil, honest times.
- Alex Danvers: J'onn J'onzz is the one who recruited me, promoted me, and taught me everything that I know. He's my family. And he is the best director this organization has ever seen.
- Colonel Lauren Haley: J'onzz set a bad precedent. But we will set things right. From now on, we are strictly by-the-book, which means we are going to act according to rank, and let's be clear about yours. Now, you might run this place, but I am your superior officer. You report to me. Understood?
- Alex Danvers: Understood.
- Colonel Lauren Haley: [Alex turns to leave] Director Danvers, when you exit, you salute your ranking officer.
- Alex Danvers: [saluting] Yes, ma'am.
- Colonel Lauren Haley: [returning the salute] We'll work on that. I still believe there's hope for you yet.
- Lena Luthor: You okay?
- James Olsen: Yeah, I'm just thinking about everything we heard at the media summit today.
- Lena Luthor: Yeah. So hateful. I didn't realize how deep it went, or how ugly it was. You were right to want to disavow it.
- James Olsen: I'm not sure disavow is the right move. Something Ben Lockwood said stuck with me.
- Lena Luthor: What?
- James Olsen: Maybe you can't change people's minds by slamming doors in their faces. And as a reporter, I need to get to the bottom of the story to figure out who these people are, find their leader. I mean, you told me yourself, these people are interested in Guardian, so maybe they'll listen to me. That's the way forward.
- Lena Luthor: Sounds dangerous.
- James Olsen: You kidding me? With you as my co-pilot?
- Kara Danvers: Elizabeth said that article I wrote on Amadei made her see him in a different light, understand the sacrifices he made.
- Nia Nal: That's fantastic. You moved her. So?
- Kara Danvers: So, I've decided to do a series of profiles called "Aliens of National City". We'll talk to a different alien every week, but not just the noted ones. They don't have to be saints; aliens are just as flawed as everyone else. But I-I think telling their stories, or all sides of them, can still help heal the divide in this city.
- [a little embarrassed]
- Kara Danvers: That's... actually the first time I've pitched it to anyone. What do you think?
- Nia Nal: I think it's great.
- [last lines]
- James Olsen: Did I catch you at a bad time?
- Ben Lockwood: No, you just caught me in the middle of some car trouble.
- James Olsen: Look, I've been thinking about what you said. Do you have time to talk?
- Ben Lockwood: Do I have time to talk? Hey, for you, friend, I got all the time in the world. What's on your mind?
- [his Agent Liberty mask hanging nearby comes into focus]
