Starring Krista Kosonen (spotted in “Blade Runner 2049”) and Pekka Strang, reuniting after their 2019 rom-com “Dogs Don’t Wear Pants,” it will see a successful woman, Maria, who shares her life with seven men – one for each day of the week. But when another one comes along, someone needs to go: a young poet, a restaurant owner that likes to party, a former soldier living on the outskirts of the society, or maybe a single dad of two kids.
“It’s a pitch-black comedy about modern relationships,” says producer Jani Pösö. “Maria has come to the conclusion that guys tend to have only one redeeming feature – everything else is total shit.

Bucking the trends for ’80s crime films, Neil Jordan’s tale of a low-rung hood attached to a ‘complicated’ call girl becomes a love story about meaningful relationships. Sort of the ‘anti- Travis Bickle,’ Bob Hoskins’ low-class mug discovers emotions and an ability to commit that could even be called Chivalric. Michael Caine chills as an all-too real villain, the boss that doesn’t think Hoskins worthy of a straight answer. Topping it off, cinematographer Roger Pratt makes this possibly the best-looking British crime film in color.

As the industry arm of the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival, the leading cinematic showcase for the Baltic nations, the five-day Industry@Tallinn & Baltic Event has grown into a lynchpin for conversations about the current and future state of production in the region, bringing together leading entertainment, tech and Vc professionals.
This year will be no different, even as the coronavirus pandemic has forced organizers to shift to a virtual-only edition—something the forward-facing event was fully equipped to do from day one, according to industry head Marge Liiske.
Despite initial thoughts of mounting a hybrid edition, Liiske says the organizing team “decided to make it inclusive for everyone,” including those who couldn’t make the trip to Tallinn. “This really is an opportunity for different people to participate without borders,” she says.

The dystopian drama is based on Emmi Itäranta’s 2014 novel of the same name. Finnish director Saara Saarela is currently working on a new project, a dystopian drama entitled Memory of Water based on Emmi Itäranta’s 2014 novel of the same name. The Helsinki-born helmer kicked off her career in film in the late 1990s and her latest feature was Finnish-Swedish drama Twisted Roots (2009), starring Milka Ahlroth in the lead role. Saarela’s new project, penned by Ilja Rautsi, focuses on a young woman who finds the courage to start a battle over fresh water in the Scandinavian Union, a land dried up by environmental disasters and controlled by a harsh military government. The main cast includes actors Saga Sarkola (Maria’s Paradise), Mimosa Willamo (Aurora), Pekka Strang (Dogs Don’t Wear Pants), and Lauri Tilkanen (Ladies of Steel). The film entered production at the end of July since filming was delayed.
"Dogs don't stand on two feet." Rlje has released an official US trailer for the extra kinky Bdsm film from Finland titled Dogs Don't Wear Pants, which first premiered at the Cannes Film Festival last year in the Directors' Fortnight sidebar. It also stopped by the Toronto Strasbourg, Sitges, and Helsinki Film Festivals last fall. Described as an "affecting and absurd dramedy", Dogs Don't Wear Pants is about a guilt-stricken widower who discovers that a demanding dominatrix might be able to give him the therapy he needs. A film about how brutal Bdsm and pup play might actually be the therapy certain people need. Starring Pekka Strang, Krista Kosonen, Ester Geislerová, Ilona Huhta, Jani Volanen, and Oona Airola. With so much funky and awkward footage, they can cut together such kinky and amusing trailers for this film. And even if you don't like Bdsm (or maybe you do?), you may be into this film anyway.

The five nominees for the 2020 Nordic Council Film Prize have just been announced, sporting a solid quintet of award and festival favourites. For the 18th time around, sharp-minded juries based in Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden have each picked their brilliant brains in search of the most splendid national representative of their respective national cinema, as dictated by the nomination procedure of the Nordic Council Film Awards. From Denmark comes Frelle Petersen’s mild-mannered story of the barren Danish countryside, Uncle. From Finland, devoid of such manners is the existential Bdsm comedy Dogs Don’t Wear Pants by J.-P. Valkeapää. Iceland is represented by Rúnar Rúnarsson’s Echo, a tour-de-force journey into modern society, made up of 56 different scenes. From Norway comes Beware of Children, the story of an accidental death of a young boy and the consequences of it among the many affected parties, meticulously written, directed and fine-tuned.
Venice Days pic “Beware of Children” and Sundance alumnus “Charter” are among the five Nordic films nominated for the coveted Nordic Council Film Prize.
“Beware of Children” was directed by Norwegian scribe/helmer Dag Johan Haugerud and produced by Yngve Sæther. The drama is set in the aftermath of a tragic event in a suburb of Oslo, where the teenage daughter of a prominent Labour Party member seriously injured her classmate, the son of a high profile right-wing politician, during a school break.
“Charter,” meanwhile, world premiered at this year’s Sundance festival and marks Swedish director/screenwriter Amanda Kernell’s second feature following “Sami Blood.” “Charter” is a character study of a flawed mother who impulsively embarks on a perilous attempt to reconnect with her children after leaving them with their father to start a new life in Stockholm. “Charter” was produced by Lars G. Lindström and Eva Åkergren.

Audiences to be directed to digital platform Curzon Home Cinema.
UK cinema chain Curzon is to close its theatres following government advice over the spread of coronavirus and direct audiences to digital platform Curzon Home Cinema.
The company operates 13 cinemas around the country, which will be closed from Thursday (March 19) and comes the day after UK prime minister Boris Johnson advised people to avoid theatres and pubs, while stopping short of forcing venues to close.
It is the latest cinema chain to announce closures on the day Odeon, Vue, Cineworld, Picturehouse, Everyman and BFI Southbank committed to shutter operations amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

Further titles include ‘The Hunt’, ‘Bloodshot’.
Philippa Lowthorpe’s Miss World drama Misbehaviour and Nick Rowland’s directorial debut Calm With Horses are two of the new titles opening at the UK box office this weekend, as the country’s cinemas stay open amid the coronavirus pandemic.
Screen has contacted all major UK distributors about their upcoming releases; of those who have responded, none have reported any changes to releases for this weekend.
Curzon has said “no changes have been made yet and won’t be unless cinemas are ordered to close”, and that it anticipates “a bigger uptake” on...

Finnish director Jukka-Pekka Valkeapää ensured that his new film was torture for his actors – literally. But he insists his immersive methods are just like gardening
Bdsm is – perhaps surprisingly – big news in Palm Springs, southern California. The director Jukka-Pekka Valkeapää, showing his new, fetish-themed, third feature, Dogs Don’t Wear Pants, at a festival in the city, was confronted with a crowd of incredulous pensioners. “There was a question: is this Bdsm thing real? Is it invented?” he says, chuckling. One shocked septuagenarian collared him after the screening to inquire after the mental health of the film’s hero: a widower who, after losing his wife in a drowning accident, tumbles headlong into the S&m scene. “She was saying: ‘No, he’s gone crazy. He’s totally lost it,’” says Valkeapää, hooting with laughter. He simmers down. “It’s not a very noble thing to achieve, disturbing old ladies.”

It is not just down to the success of ‘Parasite’.
Parasite won the Oscar for best picture and is setting box-office records for non-English-language films in several territories, including the notoriously challenging UK market, where it has now grossed £10.4m and counting.
Is this a sign of the potential for a new arthouse cinema boom? That was the question posed at a Glasgow Film Festival industry panel supported by Creative Europe Desk UK, on Tuesday (March 3).
Jason Wood, creative director at Manchester’s Home cinema and co-founder of new distributor Anti-Worlds, said he was “naturally a pessimist” but it was...

No doubt the brilliantly titled Dog Don’t Wear Pants may be perceived by some as the type of pseudo-provocative, Tinto Brass helmed bondage brouhaha which used to be deplored by Mary Whitehouse and released on VHS through the Redemption video label in the 1990s. But co-writer/director J-p Valkeapaa’s second feature is biting, spicy and electrifying film-making, melding Cronenberg, Roeg and Gaspar Noé into a dark, dreamy psychosexual drama that twists nerves, probes psyches, quickens pulses and tickles fancies with a glint in its eye, sting in its tail and sceptic, studded tongue in gullet.
The story centres on middle-aged surgeon Juha (Pekka Strang) and his teenage daughter Elli (Ilona Huta). A decade after the tragic death of Juha’s wife, he is still suffering from his grief/loss and unable to move on. That is until the day Juha stumbles upon the dungeon of dominatrix Mona (Krista Konsonen). After their first,...

A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood (Marielle Heller)
It sounds almost too perfect: Tom Hanks as Mr. Rogers, the beloved children’s entertainer. Of course, who else could it be, really? It is so seemingly predestined, in fact, that Hanks’s first onscreen appearance as Fred Rogers elicits knowing laughter from the audience. Yes, Tom Hanks playing Mr. Rogers looks and sounds exactly how you would imagine. Marielle Heller’s A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, however, is much more than an obvious biopic. It’s not really a biopic at all. Nor is it a rehash of 2018’s much-heralded documentary profile of Fred Rogers, Won’t You Be MyNeighbor?...

With a raft of new streaming services coming our way this year, it’s impressive that Shudder continues to develop compelling content and a solid horror library to keep fans returning. Having already snapped up the rights to Rob Zombie’s 3 From Hell, they’ve now announced their full lineup of titles for February 2020, which includes new original series, shorts, and a lot of classic movies.
In terms of original series, Shudder have The Dead Lands on Thursdays through March 5th, with the show adapting a 2014 New Zealand film focusing on Māori mythology. The plot covers a warrior returning from the afterlife who has to contend with the spirits of the recently dead. Given Shudder’s confirmation of a second season for Creepshow, it’ll be fascinating to see what they do with this material as they increase their original series commitments.

Ten new films in production were presented at this year’s edition of the industry event during the Black Nights Film Festival. The Baltic Event of this year’s Black Nights Film Festival brought a line-up of ten new projects to the industry audience. Although the projects selected in that strand have traditionally hailed from the Baltic Sea region, this year’s selection was even more concentrated, with all ten hailing from the Baltic countries or from Finland. Last year’s laureate of the Baltic Event Works in Progress Award, J-P Valkeapää’s Dogs Don’t Wear Pants, had its premiere in Cannes Directors’ Fortnight section. Estonia put forward three new projects this year. After The End of the Chain, which was shown in Karlovy Vary’s East of the West competition in 2017, the director Priit Pääsuke returns with low-budget youth comedy Kids of the Night, which will be about...
A third works in progress category, a new masterclass strand and an increased focus on TV among additions.
The industry activities of Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival have been steadily expanding in recent years with more sessions and an increase in international guests headed to the Estonian capital for the 2019 edition which starts today, November 25.
Remaining relatively small has proven one of Tallinn’s greatest advantages, according to Marge Liiske, managing director of Industry@Tallinn and Baltic Event.
“Even French producers say it’s easier for them to approach French sales agents here than it is in Cannes,” she says.

"I've met a nice lady." Time to get kinky. Tiff has debuted an international promo trailer for the Finnish film Dogs Don't Wear Pants, which first premiered at the Cannes Film Festival this year in the Directors' Fortnight sidebar, and is showing in Toronto next month. This funky Finnish film is still seeking international distribution after Cannes, and hopefully a few brave cinephiles will give it a look up in Toronto. I love the title, and from this trailer the awkward comedy seems to elevate this story in just the right way.

Everyone grieves loss in their own way, and sometimes finding the way that works for you can be a journey of self-discovery. Sometimes we discover things about ourselves that we never even knew, often these realizations can be terrifying and liberating in equal measure. Such is the case in Jukka-Pekka Valkeapää's Cannes Directors' Fortnight selection, Dogs Don't Wear Pants. The film opens on an idyllic lakeside scene. Juha (Pekka Strang) and his wife and daughter prepare to go for an afternoon swim, with his wife taking the first dip. Juha heads back into the house to nap and is suddenly awakened by the cries of his toddler daughter. Terrified and confused, he heads down to the lake to find that his wife has become tangled in...

One of the most exciting selections in this year's Cannes Directors' Fortnight is Finnish filmmaker Jukka-Pekka Valkeapää's tale of catharsis and bondage, Dogs Don't Wear Pants. This third film from Valkeapää tells the story of a man (Pekka Strang as Juha) who loses his wife in a tragic accident and finds a strange kind of solace when he accidentally stumbles across a local dominatrix and strikes up an unusual relationship. The program notes describe the film as, "a darkly humorous story of loss, love and the sweet pain of being." We've been given a first look at the film a stunning poster featuring Krista Kosonen and two brand new clips - one of which is Nsfw - that highlight a...
