The first reactions to the new “Predator” movie are in, and they are downright glowing. “Prey” received an early screening at San Diego Comic-Con Thursday night, after which social media reviews started to bubble up. Across the board, the first batch of reactions are heaping praise on the prequel from director Dan Trachtenberg (“10 Cloverfield Lane”).
Set 300 years in the past, in the world of the Comanche Nation, “Prey” follows a character named Naru (Amber Midthunder), a warrior “raised in the shadow of some of the most legendary hunters who roam the Great Plains.” When the alien Predator comes calling, Naru sets out to protect her people.
The film features a cast comprised almost entirely of Native and First Nation’s talent, including Midthunder, newcomer Dakota Beavers, Stormee Kipp (“Sooyii”), Michelle Thrush (“The Journey Home”) and Julian Black Antelope (“Tribal”).

“Prey” is a prequel to the “Predator” horror franchise set 300 years ago in the Comanche Nation, and in the first full trailer for the new action-thriller, the Predator alien monster proves that it’s far more deadly than wildlife or European colonizers.
Dan Trachtenberg directs “Prey,” which will debut on Hulu in the U.S. and follows a skilled young woman named Naru in the Comanche Native American tribe 300 years before the events of the original film franchise.
She’s determined to prove to her tribe that she can hunt and that she can survive, and after barely surviving angering a vicious grizzly bear, she finds that this mysterious new creature that manages to kill it with ease might be the real threat. Exclusive: Indigenous actress Jessica Matten (Tribal) is set as a series regular opposite Zahn McClarnon, Kiowa Gordon and Noah Emmerich in Dark Winds, AMC’s Western noir thriller series based on Tony Hillerman’s popular Leaphorn & Chee book series. It hails from creator Graham Roland and executive producers George R.R. Martin and Robert Redford.
Created and executive produced by Roland, Dark Winds, which has a six-episode order, is a psychological thriller that follows two Navajo police officers, Leaphorn (McClarnon) and Chee (Gordon), in the 1970s Southwest as their search for clues in a grisly double-murder case forces them to challenge their own spiritual beliefs and come to terms with the trauma of their pasts. Season 1 is expected to premiere on AMC+ and AMC in 2022.
Matten will play Bernadette Manuelito, a Navajo police sergeant, she works closely with Leaphorn. Sharp as a tack, efficient, hard-working, perceptive, she’s tough and nothing gets by her.

We are living in some extremely exciting times when it comes to British independent cinema. I mean yes, okay, Covid-19 has been a soul sucking bitch we could all do without but it has given us all a minute to admire what the true creatives are coming out with and I would say more low budget projects, thanks to Hollywood almost giving up on movies, are finding their day in the sun and I for one am hugely impressed with what I’ve seen so far… Tribal: Get Out Alive is one such flick that I have been keeping an eye on for a while now, especially as the cast and crew were dropping the odd behind the scenes teaser on social media. However I was not expecting this!
