A decent second story.

The Passing Bell is a good traditional Father Brown mystery, with a good mystery, a good set of characters, and the usual magical set of production values.

It's a little formulaic you could argue, in a Murder she wrote sense in that it's the bad guy you expect to be killed that gets done in. Mervyn Glossop was a little too obvious as the bad guy.

I liked the mystery, and liked the feel of the story, not a typical mystery in the usual sense, but a well crafted episode. Selina Griffiths as always was terrific. I still picture Margaret Meldrew.

The passing bell

A new musical director for the bellringers of St Mary's leads to discord, disharmony and the blood-curdling sound of murder. Passing entry that is formulaic but enjoyable. Not as complex as that other famous bell ringing mystery by Dorothy L Sayers' the Nine Tailors, but straightforward mystery.

Not great!

Warning: Spoilers
After the seventh season started off on a pretty good note with "The Great Train Robbery", I was looking forward to the next episode, "The Passing Bell". Sadly, it's not as near as good as "The Great Train Robbery". It is not bad, but nothing more than decent.

Let's start with the good aspects, shall we?

. The production values of the episode are great as usual. It's mostly well- shot, the music's great and the acting is passable too. Out of the guest stars, I enjoyed Jordan Metcalfe's perforance the most. Selina Griffiths and Rupert Holliday- Evans were not bad either, but some parts of their characters felt a bit rushed.

. The murder mystery is quite enjoyable here with witty humor and an intriquing solution (the murder was actually an accident).

That being said.

. Some of the dialogue is often weak and I was not surprised by the messy drone footage used in the directing.

. The story could have been a lot more emotionally investing as well. Especially when it came to the relationship between two women.

Overall, a fine episode .

Two Belles

Warning: Spoilers
The LGBTI sub-plot in The Passing Bell will no doubt infuriate some of the Father Brown fans because let's face it, Kembleford ain't the urban inner city init. Still, The Passing Bell is worth the time to watch once. I'm now catching up on Father Brown as it was a show I hardly watched prior to the pandemic. So I'm catching up on Father Brown, Barry and Superstore and also Monk and Magnum, P. I. (the original one with Tom Selleck o course).

Anyway, back to The Passing Bell. The enthusiasm of the bell ringers in the final scene was worth the price of gold, and it shows the importance of bell ringers in Kembleford.

Puleeeese!

Have spent some time googling the works of Rachel and Tahsin, the writers and developers of this series and think I finally understand why we are getting such a non-Father Brown masquerading as the real thing. The "mixed cloth" words coming from FB's mouth were a dead give away as to the writers leanings and lack of Biblical knowledge. They are deliberately choosing to portray a man of God as supportive of a lifestyle that he would not have supported. Shame on them. I just wish the Chesterton estate could sue them for misrepresentation. The 3 is for the scenery and costumes, both are wonderful.

Mervyn Glossop. Here is a bitter, nasty man. He is the lead bell ringer at St Mary's and relations are not harmonious when Jamie Cheeseman enters as the new musical director.

Jamie is talented, has new ideas and is connected to the church. Glossop is far from happy with this state of affairs.

However when Jamie is found dead, Jamie and well as the other bell ringers are under suspicion. All of them have something to hide and Glossop knew their secrets.

A slight change in the formula. Not a whodunnit but whether the accused will get proper justice.

There was one element that was sloppy. 'But to turn the key, you needed to remove your glove....' That makes no sense!

The end

I have loved and watched the Father Brown series for years. I got much enjoyment . It was a nice reprieve from the world. After this episode and a few before, I saw the writing and moral compass had changed. I noticed more graphic violence. Sadly, I unsubscribed to Brit Box and will not watch further. Thank you writers for ruining wholesome entertainment. I am very disappointed in theses last few storylines. Why did the writers have to add controversial content. Evil has to insert itself everywhere. GK Chesterton would be appalled. You need to remove him as writer, because he never would have written content such as this The writers have also disparaged priests.
