“Veep” star Sam Richardson says he’d like members of the AMPTP to “be human beings” as SAG-AFTRA hits its 11th day on the pickets lines.
The WGA strike struck on May 2, and following along in protest against the AMPTP on July 14 was SAG-AFTRA. The actors union made the decision after new contract talks with major studios and streaming services failed before July 13. The showdown could last months longer, and there’s even been speculation that studios will hold out until actors and writers are broken financially.
While recognizing and acknowledging the history of how large operations like the Hollywood studios work, Richardson said one of the biggest messages he has for the AMPTP is to have empathy for other people.

Luke Bracey and Brittany Snow have signed on to star in Tom Chilcoat’s debut feature, Big Nickel, with principal photography kicking off in the U.S this winter.
Co-written by Chilcoat and David Birke, the thriller centers on Charlie (Bracey), a charismatic Army recruiter, who is tasked with signing the “big fish” for a promotion. The only person standing in his way is Erik, a disturbed ex-vet that Charlie convinced to enlist years before. A dangerous man with a bone to pick, Erik will not be satisfied until Charlie has paid a heavy price—and as pressure mounts, Charlie is ultimately forced to re-examine his dubious methods, facing a thunderous reckoning of accountability.
A Traction and Arclight Films production, Big Nickel is produced by Traction’s Jason Tamasco and Zak Kristofek. Executive producers include Arclight Films’ Gary Hamilton, Ryan Hamilton and Ying Ye.
A native of Australia, Bracey is best known for turns in Netflix original rom-com Holidate, Warner Bros. and Lionsgate’s Point Break remake, Summit Entertainment and Lionsgate’s Oscar-winning war film Hacksaw Ridge and acclaimed Hulu miniseries, Little Fires Everywhere.
Rising to fame following her appearance on NBC drama series American Dreams, Snow’s TV credits include Ryan Murphy’s Nip/Tuck, David E. Kelly’s Harry’s Law, The CW’s musical comedy Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and Fox’s Almost Family.
On the film side, the actress is internationally recognized for her turn as Chloe in Universal Studios’ Pitch Perfect franchise. Additional big screen credits include The Pacifier, John Tucker Must Die, Prom Night and Hairspray. Most recently, Snow produced and starred in the comedic feature, Hooking Up, also starring in Netflix feature Someone Great, produced by Paul Feig.
Bracey is represented in the U.S. by CAA, Fourward, and attorney Michael Schenkman of Goodman, Genow, Schenkman, Smelkinson & Christopher. In Australia, the actor is repped by Morrissey Management. Snow is repped by The Gersh Agency and Principal Entertainment.

Welcome to September, ladies and gentlemen. With the summer coming to and end, the fall almost upon us, and the Covid-19 pandemic still very much impacting the industry, much is still up in the air. Such is life with the coronavirus holding up much of the film industry. As fitting this weird year, not much has changed since July when I looked at the best of the first half of the year. Mostly, this just means the best is (hopefully) still to come here. We shall see, but just keep in mind that the midpoint of 2020 has been somewhat of a holding pattern, for obvious reasons. Let’s get right down to it. Below you’ll find my top ten of the year so far, along with my awards for the first two thirds of 2020. Here you go folks, and enjoy: 10. Crshd 9. The Outpost 8. Buffaloed 7. Da 5 Bloods 6. The Invisible Man...

Well, we’re halfway through one of the strangest movie years we’ve ever had. For someone who sees more than 300 films a year, not having been in a theater since early March is insane. Still, as you all know, I’ve still been seeing plenty of things, so my film count is over 180 overall for 2020. That being said, for most, that’s not the case, and that’s a shame. Still, with it being July 1st, it’s time to look back on the first half of the year, honoring the best movies and performances that I’ve seen. This year, I’m being very open-minded (minus two specific titles), so if I’ve seen it, it’s potentially on the list. Basically, there’s a few festival titles or July releases that I normally would have held back on, but I figured…why not? Let’s get right down to it.

From scene-stealing roles in Veep and Curb Your Enthusiasm to new romcom Hooking Up, the ex-cruise liner comic is happy playing the underdog
If you want to watch Sam Richardson, it’s a good idea to just head for the best comedy you can think of, because he’ll probably be in it. He played an abnormally good-natured aide in Veep. He played the best friend of a dead rapper in YouTube’s wonderful yet chronically overlooked Champaign Ill. He co-created Detroiters with Tim Robinson, which is very possibly the finest sitcom you’ve never seen. He has enjoyed stints on Arrested Development, Curb Your Enthusiasm, The Office and BoJack Horseman.
He also featured in two standout sketches from Netflix’s I Think You Should Leave – the best television series of 2019 and the best sketch show of the last decade – as the Baby of the Year host and the furious...

A third of the way through the year, it’s safe to say that 2020 is unlike any we’ve ever faced. Cinemas are shut, large scale wide releases are on pause, and the only things being put out are independent titles, through Video On Demand services. Still, there are a great deal of quality films have that come out, along with several award worthy performances. Today, much like we did last month, we’re going to focus on these movies and acting turns, as a way of keeping a positive frame of mind. To be fair, a lot of these flicks and acting jobs will be repeats, but we’re just in a sort of holding pattern right now. Still, superior cinema is superior cinema… Let’s get right down to it. Below you’ll find my top ten of the year so far, along with my awards for the...

In some ways, it feels very silly to do this annual look at the best of the first quarter of the cinematic year. After all, the world has changed and the film world especially has come to a screeching halt. At the same time , a sense of normalcy however possible is always good. So, I’m pressing on and listing my favorite titles and work from the first three months of 2020. Obviously, a lot of high profile flicks were delayed, so whether I saw them or not, I’m not including them here. Still, including things I saw late in 2019 but hit this year, I had over 90 options to pull from. So, hopefully this is a Farley exhaustive list, even if it’s very much skewed by my personal taste. Let’s get right down to it. Below you’ll find my top ten of the year so far, along...

The last place you’d expect to find a meet-cute is in the hallway between a sex addiction support group and a cancer support group. That’s where the paths of Darla (Brittany Snow) and Bailey (Sam Richardson) cross in the new rom-com Hooking Up. What ensues can be loosely defined as a sex comedy, but one that doesn’t rely on raunchy gimmicks.
Both Snow (Pitch Perfect), who also served as a producer on the film, and Richardson recently spoke with Den of Geek about making a sex positive comedy that also dives into the nuances and grey areas of sex addiction, and touches on themes of companionship and coping with hardships.
Hooking Up is now available on digital and on demand. Read on below for the full Q&a!

Welcome back one and all to the weekly box office report! As is always the case, each and every Sunday you can expect a look at what made the most money in theaters, as well as just how all of the new releases fared. Well, that’s how we normally start off this post, but as you all know, the Coronavirus pandemic has closed movie theaters across the country (many of the the theater chains started doing so this week). Without new film releases, obviously the box office has completely tanked. Still, if/when reports are still being made public, we’ll report them. Consider it an attempt at normalcy in these anything but normal times, silly as it may be… With no new releases, I’ll just remind you all that Blow the Man Down, Hooking Up, and Human Capital were among the titles hitting VOD. Obviously, they didn’t come to theaters,...

An elementary school classroom may seem an odd place to launch a romantic comedy that soon finds its protagonists coupling with abandon in a slew of quasi-public spaces. But in the rom-com “Hooking Up” — available digitally and on demand — that’s precisely where magazine writer Darla emerges from, having had an afterschool special with a stranger on a teeny desk.
Then again, a school proves perhaps too apt a location. There’s a rudimentary feel to “Hooking Up,” which stars Brittany Snow and Sam Richardson as a twosome who embark on a road trip with benefits. Genres often provide refuge to first-time feature filmmakers. Director Nico Raineau and co-writer Lauren Schacher hug the familiar beats of the form while rubbing up against its conventions with some naughty, sometimes endearing tweaks.
That school turns out to be a busy one. There’s a sex addiction group in one room and a cancer survivors’ gathering in another.

Anyone who watched Veep over the years could always count on Sam Richardson to provide hilarious support on that show. However, he’s always shown the ability to do more, and this week, audiences at home have been able to notice his more diverse skillset due to the VOD release of Hooking Up. One of the year’s best films so far, we raved earlier in the week about the movie, and yesterday, Richardson was kind enough to jump on the phone for a few minutes to have a chat. Not only did we discuss Hooking Up, as well as his co-star Brittany Snow, a little bit of Veep came up as well. Hopefully you enjoy the talk with Richardson, though fair warning: his cellphone was providing a fair amount of distortion during the early part of the conversation. In fact, the call cut off at one point and had...

Even in trying times, a great movie can do wonders for you. The prospect of watching Sam Richardson and Brittany Snow in a romantic comedy already offered up some glowing potential, but nothing will prepare you for how wonderful this film is. A charming, funny, and sexy rom-com, Hooking Up even manages to get serious at times in a way that never betrays its core entertainment value. With terrific performances by Richardson and Snow, who display absolutely phenomenal chemistry, this is one of the year’s most pleasant surprises. Coming to VOD on Friday (an initially theatrical run is obviously out of the question right now), it deserves to find a place in your hearts. The film is a romantic comedy couched around a road trip. Netflix’s breakout sketch comedy series I Think You Should Leave has reached a level of cult phenomenon that one of the show’s actors is only just beginning to process.

Richardson is in awe of the show’s viral status, which has led to a tidal wave of memes, an unlikely breakout star, and niche fan accounts like the brilliant NBA/I Think You Should Leave crossover. Richardson starred alongside Robinson, his lifelong best friend, in Comedy Central’s Detroiters, the short-lived but critically acclaimed buddy comedy about two Detroit ad men. "I'm trying to distract myself, but I'm still terrified." Saban has unveiled a trailer for a spunky relationship comedy titled Hooking Up, premiering in select theaters and on VOD in March. Produced by and starring Brittany Snow, the film is about a "mismatched duo" that end up on a road trip together. Bailey, played by Sam Richardson, and Darla, played by Brittany Snow, embark upon a misguided and mutually deceitful form of therapy, one in which they must drive across the country re-enacting Darla's colorful history as a sex addict. As their true motivations for the spontaneous road trip come to light, the unlikely pair must force one another to confront their issues, discovering that there might actually be more to love than just sex. The cast also includes Jordana Brewster, Vivica A. Fox, Amy Pietz, Anna Akana, and Rob Moran. This looks like a quirky, fun romantic adventure. I...
