The Canadian-born comic and actor, also known as “King Bach,” has in all around 75 million fans online, especially on Vine, the shortform video-sharing platform. Exclusive: Comedian Tom Segura has identified the most promising vehicle yet to showcase his acting chops, as Deadline understands that he’s in talks for multiple roles in Dirty Rotten Bastard, a show biz-centric indie from Ed Helms & Mike Falbo’s Pacific Electric Picture Company.
Helmed by Ryan McNeely and Josh Martin, aka The Director Brothers, the film tells the insane true story of an aspiring filmmaker who is kidnapped by deranged lounge singer Tony Clifton. Initially drawn to document Clifton’s world, he is thrust into a chaotic journey of sex, celebrity, and comedy, blurring the lines between observer and participant, and testing his sanity.
Segura will play legendary avant-garde comedian Andy Kaufman’s larger-than-life comedic persona Clifton, as well as the performer’s friend and longtime collaborator Bob Zmuda.
Zmuda was known to switch off with Kaufman in portraying Clifton, a foul-mouthed lounge singer out of Las Vegas,...

Champions is a comedy movie directed by Bobby Farrelly starring Woody Harrelson and Ernie Hudson.
Remake of the Spanish film Campeones. No one dared to trash the Spanish film, but this one has been given its due by specialized critics.
Sometimes you have to judge cinema as cinema, and sometimes even film critics get it right.
Sentimental and trite.
Movie Review
Is it better than the Spanish version? Of course, Hollywood exhibits all its industry muscle, and what was a European production in the Hispanic film – with its own merit but lacking on a production level, here the industry exhibits its potential and gives a quick polish to everything: the editing, the sound, and puts a star, Woody Harrelson, in the spotlight.
It takes everything from the Spanish film, except for the great campaign that was made to judge a film not by its cinematic content but by its more social side.

Showtime has added the third woman to its upcoming “Three Women” adaptation. Betty Gilpin will star opposite DeWanda Wise and Shailene Woodley, the network said Monday.
Gilpin will play Lina, a homemaker in Indiana who, after a decade in a passionless marriage, embarks on an affair that quickly becomes all-consuming and transforms her life.
The series, an adaptation of the bestseller by Lisa Taddeo, is described as an “intimate, haunting portrayal of American female desire” centered on three women “on a crash course to radically overturn their lives.”
Taddeo will serve as a writer and executive producer on the adaptation, alongside showrunner Laura Eason, Kathy Ciric and Emmy Rossum. Louise Friedberg will direct the first two episodes, which she will also executive produce.

Exclusive: Oscar-nominated and Golden Globe-winning actor, writer, producer, activist and overall queen Taraji P. Henson has signed with M88. Henson will be repped by the entire M88 team, led by new partner Oronde Garrett and co-founder Phillip Sun.
Henson has an acting career that showcases both her range and personality. Most recently, she wrapped Empire where she played the memorable no-nonsense Cookie Lyon. The role earned her three Emmy nominations, a Golden Globe, a Critics’ Choice Award and three BET Awards.
In July, Henson’s production company Tph Entertainment signed a first-look deal with Twentieth Century Fox TV. The first project in development out of the gate is — you guessed it — a Cookie Lyon spinoff series. The agreement with Fox will also include other projects for multiple platforms.

As much as we appreciate a special bird for its sacrifice for our holiday meals, the term "turkeys" has always been associated with things that fail, no matter how hard they try.
We love to eat them, but we don't have any qualms tying them the worst of any discussion, which, in this case, is all about television.
So while you're giving props to the bird on your table, let's talk turkey in another way with the awful programming we're calling TV's Biggest Turkeys.
Coffee & Kareem - Netflix
This Netflix movie heralded a cast including the likes of Ed Helm and Taraji P. Henson. It should've been funny, or at least made the viewer smile.
However, it was unnecessarily explicit and profane with an obnoxious, foul-mouthed 12-year-old, a dopey police officer, and a tired retreaded buddy cop attempt that skirted along the lines of racist Af. It wasn't just bad,...

Over his past couple of features, “Stuber” and “Coffee & Kareem,” Michael Dowse has established himself as a director that loves to play with the combination of over-the-top violence and raunchy humor. And if there was ever a video game franchise that Dowse could apply that style to with a film adaptation, it would be “Just Cause.”

Over the lockdown, I’ve noticed a pattern of lighthearted movies taking over Netflix. Coffee & Kareem was the talk of the platform for about a week and Despicable Me made a big comeback to take the number one spot from Tiger King a few weeks back. Of course, both of these have one thing in common: they have absolutely nothing to do with coronavirus.
Now, that trend of silly movies that don’t make you think of the viral pandemic wreaking havoc across the world continues, as the new David Spade film The Wrong Missy is currently at the #1 spot on Netflix’s Top 10 Movies and Top 10 overall charts.
The comedy (which comes in at a suspiciously contract-fulfilling exact 90 minutes) is about a man who inadvertently invites the wrong woman to his company retreat and debuted on Netflix on May 13th, boasting Adam Sandler as a producer. It went...

Jim Gaffigan is preparing to play former Toronto mayor Rob Ford in a scripted series currently in the works at AMC, Variety has learned exclusively.
Jesse McKeown will write and executive produce, with Ed Helms and Mike Falbo executive producing under their Pacific Electric Picture Co. banner. Michael Dowse will executive produce and direct.
The dark comedy series would detail the rise and fall of the controversial Ford, who served as the mayor of Toronto from 2010 to 2014 after many years as a city councilor. He was infamously caught on video smoking crack cocaine during his reelection campaign and was known to suffer from other substance abuse issues.
Should the project move forward it would not be the first onscreen depiction of Ford. Damian Lewis played Ford in the film “Run This Town,” which debuted at SXSW last year.

The history of race-focused buddy-cop action-comedies goes something like this: two disparate people from disparate backgrounds—usually an asshole police officer and a person of color, who isn’t a cop (think “48 Hours“)—are unexpectedly thrust together when some crime goes awry. Through plot machinations, these two unlikely partners— usually detesting one another for various reasons, racial divide being key— are forced to solve the mystery behind said crime while bickering constantly and trying not to get killed in the process.

With people having a lot more free time on their hands now due to the Coronavirus pandemic, it seems everyone’s viewing habits are beginning to change. Titles that might’ve caught your eye in the past but you skipped due to lack of time may now be finding their way onto the top of your Watch List. And that makes perfect sense.
But another interesting viewing habit that’s begun to emerge is terrible films – we’re talking movies that bombed both critically and commercially upon release – finding new life on streaming platforms. And in particular, Netflix.
It seems not a week goes by without Netflix’s Top 10 Movies list being updated to include a few total surprises. For instance, just yesterday we reported on how Gerard Butler’s Angel Has Fallen is completely dominating on the streaming site right now, which makes zero sense given that it was...

A couple of weeks in Coronavirus lockdown can do strange things to a person. All across the nation, people are cutting their own hair, baking weirdly shaped loaves of bread and recording TikToks they’ll later regret. One other thing they’re doing though is watching the terrible new Netflix Original movie Coffee & Kareem.
This is one of those films where you sense the writers came up with the title first and wrote a movie around it. That’s why viewers all over the world are settling in to watch the contrived adventures of police officer John Coffee and 12-year-old boy Kareem Manning. The pair are exact opposites, yet come to respect their differences while taking down some variety of criminal network. Currently sitting at a princely 23% on the Tomatometer (with a 35% audience score), critics have described it as having “literally one joke,” feeling like it’s “algorithmically assembled...

Junket Prods. saw it coming. Back in February, when President Trump said the virus would soon dwindle to “one or two people,” veteran behind-the-scenes producers Jody Pritchard (in Los Angeles) and Suzanne Marvier (in New York) rushed to get ahead of the crisis. I’m almost certain that the creators of Coffee & Kareem started with the title and then worked out a movie that’d fit it. The Netflix original comedy launched yesterday, showing the adventures of police officer James Coffee and 12-year-old boy Kareem Manning. They hate each other’s guts, but for some totally uncontrived reason end up working together to battle some kind of criminal network. They’re the classic odd couple.
Despite some mixed reviews, Coffee & Kareem seems to be going down a storm with viewers, with many folks finding it to be hilarious. And here’s just a selection of what’s being said on social media:

Until recently, Taraji P. Henson was concentrating on finishing up her time as Cookie Lyon on Fox’s “Empire,” but on March 14, production was halted due to the coronavirus pandemic.
“We were almost finished,” Henson told Variety, via a video conference call to promote her Netflix film “Coffee & Kareem” on March 31. “We were at the finish line.”
“We had 20 episodes to shoot,” the star explained. “We were in the middle of episode 19 and then this happened. So, we just have about a week and a half to go, about 10 more days and we’ll be finished.”
After Henson’s interview with Variety, Fox announced that “Empire’s” final season would be cut short by two episodes and the series finale will air on April 21. Sources told Variety that footage from episode 19 will be edited into the finale episode. News of the sixth season being cut short was revealed during...

A handful of amusing lines and a standout turn from Glow’s Betty Giplin can’t elevate this crass and convoluted spin on a familiar buddy movie setup
There’s a better movie buried underneath the many corpses in the crude and confused Netflix comedy Coffee & Kareem, one of their algorithmically assembled weekend options patchworked together from a stack of search terms. It’s an attempt to update a buddy movie formula that flourished most in the 1980s with films like 48 Hours, Turner & Hooch and Tango & Cash but with a half-open eye on the current climate. The most recent theatrical attempt, the Kumail Nanjiani/Dave Bautista-starring Stuber, flopped last summer while Netflix has seen its own, the Mark Wahlberg/Winston Duke vehicle Spenser Confidential, reportedly score huge streaming numbers, despite a small issue of quality.

Plot: A clumsy cop (Ed Helms) agrees to pick his girlfriend’s (Taraji P. An action-comedy whose default mode is a kind of sustained hysteria, “Coffee & Kareem” starts with buddy-movie tropes, massive amounts of firepower and even more four-letter words. It tosses them in a meat grinder with some wry psychobabble, some social commentary and a dash of family values and throws them against Netflix’s virtual wall to see what sticks.
It’s kind of a mess, a crazy balancing act that flails as often as it connects. But director Michael Dowse, working from a Black Listed script by Shane Mack, has fun with the whole crazy concoction and finds at least one scene-stealing performance that hits just the right note of insanity.
Over the years, Dowse has shown to be adept with mockumentary (the 2002 Sundance hit “Fubar”) and indie romantic comedy. But “Coffee & Kareem” is his second straight movie to focus on odd-couple crimefighters, after last year’s “Stuber” with...

For anyone who hasn’t gotten their fill of Betty Gilpin maniacally screaming while brandishing a deadly weapon this year — and, no, even with the actress’ outstanding performance in “The Hunt” already available to watch in your own home, you have not yet gotten your fill — Michael Dowse’s uneven “Coffee & Kareem” at least offers that in heady doses. The “Stuber” and “Goon” filmmaker has decamped for Netflix for his latest feature, a raunchy, foul-mouthed buddy comedy about mismatched maybe-pals that never quite lives up to its caffeine-infused title.
Diverting enough at just under 90 minutes, “Coffee & Kareem” likely won’t do for the R-rated comedy that other Netflix offerings have done for the rom-com, but a strong finale helps end thing things on a high point. And while the film is understandably concerned with its titular characters — Ed Helms as straight-edge Detroit cop James Coffee, young star Terrence Little Gardenhigh...

There’s politically incorrect, and then there’s just plain wrong.
Netflix’s “Coffee & Kareem” pairs a young black kid with an inept white cop and hopes that their differences will amuse (or at least distract) stuck-at-home audiences for 90 minutes or so. But what audiences? What adult wants to watch this kind of “Kindergarten Cop” nonsense? that no parent in his or her right mind would let Junior tune in.
But that’s the beauty of Netflix, I guess: Age-based MPAA ratings are for the chumps who make movies for theaters (such a 20th-century — or at least pre-coronavirus — concept), whereas when it comes to serve-yourself at-home streaming, there’s no divide between bad movies and bad-for-you movies.
So here’s the pitch: James Coffee is an awkward, overly cautious cop — a role for which Ed Helms is well suited. Kareem Manning is a chubbier-than-most Detroit public school misfit forced...

With streaming services growing like weeds and a new one on the way this month in the form of Quibi, there’s never been more pressure on Netflix to remain our platform of choice. As a result, it’s making original TV series and movies at an accelerated pace that we can barely keep up with. There’s only so much time in the day! Please, think of us as the Dom Toretto of streaming – we live our lives a quarter mile at a time.
As a result, we’re putting together a monthly list of everything we know is coming to Netflix UK, so you can plan ahead and make informed choices. Use your spare time wisely, and you’re likely to experience …well, let’s just say ‘slightly fewer regrets’. We don’t want to go overboard.

Now that we’re self-isolating at home to help defeat the Covid-19 pandemic, this may be the perfect opportunity to catch up on things that have been in our Netflix watchlist for a long while.
The novel coronavirus, a mutated strand from the family of coronaviruses, originated from Wuhan, China late last year, but currently, every single country in the world is battling the outbreak. As of now, more than 714,000 people have contracted the disease and 33,617 have passed away due to severe cases of acute respiratory syndrome. In the Us alone, more than 139,000 patients have been identified and approximately 158 million people are under lockdown across all 50 states. While the ramifications of the Covid-19 may have dealt the world of economics an unprecedented blow, business models like Netflix have profited from people spending more time at home with little to do.

"Ohhhh, why did I date a white guy?! My friend Sharon was right!" Netflix has unveiled an official trailer for an action comedy called Coffee & Kareem, the latest movie from Canadian filmmaker Michael Dowse. Twelve-year-old Kareem Manning hires a criminal to scare his mom's new boyfriend – police officer James Coffee – but it backfires, forcing Coffee and Kareem to team up in order to save themselves from Detroit's most ruthless drug kingpin. This stars Ed Helms and Taraji P. Henson, also joined by Betty Gilpin, RonReaco Lee, Andrew Bachelor (King Bach) and David Alan Grier. This looks painfully campy and so unoriginal it's hard to even laugh at any of the humor, especially from the kid. But maybe I'm really not the target audience for this kind of ridiculous comedy. Does it look that funny? Here's the official trailer (+ posters) for Michael Dowse's Coffee & Kareem, direct from Netflix's YouTube: In the raunchy,...

Buddy-cop films are a staple of the comedy genre. All you have to say is Riggs and Murtaugh and film fans know exactly who you mean, as “Lethal Weapon” is probably the greatest example of this premise. Well, Netflix is hoping that you remember the names Coffee and Kareem.

You’ve probably heard the news that we’re all gonna be indoors for a little while. There’s no way around that and it sucks to hear. It also makes the usual entertainment stuff each month seem just a little more poignant. While Netflix reveals its new releases each month as a matter of course, the Netflix new releases for April 2020 obviously have some added import.
Thankfully it looks like Netflix is going to ease our social isolation with some easy-watching originals, and a handful of fun original and existing movie options. There isn’t a Stranger Things-like Netflix juggernaut on the schedule for April but there are excellent, bingeable shows like Nailed It! (April 1), The Innocence Files (April 15), and Kenya Barris’s first Netflix offering #blackAF (April 17).

For the last several years, Hollywood films have been trying to convince us that race relations in the United States can be resolved if 1) a black man goes on a road trip with a racist white man, 2) a white Nazi falls in love with a black German girl, or 3) a black domestic worker bakes a pie made out of feces for her racist employer. And that’s just the shortlist of basic solutions Hollywood has concocted. So it should come as no surprise that we have yet another film that simplifies the issue by asking the question: Have we just tried talking to each other?
