For the Birds (2000)
Pixar does it again.
I was fortunate to be at one of the first ever screenings of this short, presented by John Lasseter at the Disney Institute. Once again Pixar leaves you rolling in the aisles. Bird owners are sure to get a special kick out of this one. I don't think any of today's animation companies exhibit the true spirit of animation like Pixar does.
Old Yeller (1957)
an old friend
I can't tell you what a pleasure it is to return to this film as an adult. It's every bit as moving now as it was when I was a kid. As an adult, I realize that this is more Arliss's story than it is Old Yeller's. It's a touching coming of age story. When I was a child, all my tears at the end were for the dog. As a grown-up a lot more of them were for Arliss as he prepares to pull that trigger and become a man.
The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996)
Please read the book!!
While I admit that I enjoyed the movie, particularly Alan Menken's score and the opening song, I encourage all fans of this movie and of this story to read the book. I undertook the novel in 1996 because I knew it was too massive to be contained by any one movie and I wanted to know what the real story was. It may be a chore getting through some of the long descriptive passages, but it is worth it. Disney's version is entertaining, but there is very little of Victor Hugo in this retelling. Please don't fool yourself into thinking you know this story simply because you saw the cartoon.
General Spanky (1936)
A must-see for any "Our Gang" fan.
This is a cute film starring Spanky, Alfalfa and Buckwheat from the "Our Gang" comedies. Set in the South during the Civil War, it may seem a little odd to see Buckwheat as Spanky's slave, but this film is as charming as the best of the shorts with the same cast. This was the only Our Gang feature film, and I highly recommend it over The Little Rascals remake from 1994.
