Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India (2001)
As Good As It Gets!
I have always wondered why most Indian blockbusters are based on love and family affairs; Hollywood movies span such a vast variety of topics. I must thank Aamir for having broken that barrier making an excellent movie that not only touches the hearts of millions of Indians with their favorite pastime, cricket, but at the same time tackles the sensitive issue of the British Raj in the most hilarious way possible. The four hour long saga was smooth as silk and one of the few Indian movies in which songs are interwoven in the story and just seem to happen .... at the right moment! Accolades to Rahman for putting together another masterpiece soundtrack. I just wish this would've been released in the "English" theatres also to become the first Indian blockbuster in the US (surpassing even Crouching Tiger ...)
Mission Kashmir (2000)
Good direction, but jerky story line
From a 30,000ft level, the story was great, but coming down to minute details, the movie came a bit short. It was jerky at times and some songs/events seemed to appear out of nowhere. Music was great and Vidhu Vinod Chopra's direction was superb.
Hey Ram (2000)
Long Live the King!
Not just Lord Ram, but also Kamala Haasan. Whatever be the verdict of the general public, I have to say that this was one HIGH IMPACT movie! The director has indeed done a great job at handling such a sensitive issue with great tact. It shows events surrounding India's independence the way they would've happened in real life. It beautifully brings out the mindset of an average well-educated man who has gone through various turmoils in his life and how his fickle mind tends to shift between the temptations of wordly affairs and his true inner feelings. The final twist adds extra spice to the whole affair. This movie will remain on my favorites list for a long time to come ...
Maachis (1996)
This is REAL!
... noone gains anything out of terrorism! And no better movie to portray this stark reality than Maachis! It truly depicts the circumstances that have forced many-an-innocent and ordinary men and women into terrorism in Punjab and Kashmir only to be slain by the police and/or by their own counterparts. The mixed feelings of a person on the borderline of becoming a terrorist are brought out beautifully. Except the part about how Kirpal Singh is finally caught, a very well made movie!
