Waiting to Exhale (1995)
Sticky
There was nothing in the movie that made me excited. The message did not come through, if there was one. Perhaps it is to convey the idea that men are useless, or that relations are complicated because women make it complicated. If a comedy, I did not laugh. If a drama, I did not find it dramatic.
It was like drinking a cup of coffee presented to you with way too much sugar.
The Thin Red Line (1998)
Bits and pieces of pure excellence
It is pure. But it is not for the regular movie gluttonist.
Life is about living. War is about killing. Life is war and the stage of The Thin Red Line could be set at any place, any time with anybody playing the roles, merely because life is war.
If you have read one poem in your life and enjoyed it, this movie is for you.
Go see it when the theatre will be empty and you can have the whole movie to yourself. Climb into the screen and walk with the soldiers. At no stage should your attention be drawn from any scene, and forbid that you land next to an irritated soul who should have left after the opening scenes.
DO NOT wait for the video.
The Truman Show (1998)
Freshly new
The success is bedded in the originality of the story. It is a brilliantly original, super movie. Ace Ventura tends to still cling to Jim Carrey, but he did real good. The other actors does not really have a score to make an acting stand to make a real impression. I think the movie could have been a few minutes longer, building on the plot of getting free. A brainwashed person like this would not just walk out. The people who opened his eyes could have come in stronger. I would have liked Truman on the outside for two minutes as well, as an ending. The music was strong and complimented the movie excellently.
Caught (1996)
Realistic and tense
A movie to see. The erotic scenes were not tasteless, but the age restriction should be a bit higher. Ms Alonso was very good ...... looks and acting. The rest of the team were also good. A movie with a lesson to a lot of People!
Meet Joe Black (1998)
An excellent chosen cast makes this an enjoyable movie.
A good movie. Not outstandingly excellent, but truly enjoyable. The cast choice was however above the average. Not one character was out of place. Sir Anthony (as William) was the highlight - again, of course, but Ms Forlani(as Susan), a first timer to me, played her role with passion. To me the other two outstanding choices for their roles were Jake Weber (as Drew - really very good) and Jeffrey Tambor (as Quince). Mr Pitt (as Joe Black) was acceptable. His character did however not give him space to get his head out of the clouds - and this floating-in-heaven look on his face got a bit irritating in the long run. But he did good of what was expected of him. The movie's length was not a known fact to me beforehand, but at no stage did it bother me to sit so long, but some of the long scenes were too long. The quality of the depth of what was said became a bit shallower. Life always has death blowing in its neck, and those who know of the time of door-knocking in advance, has a little advantage to put quality into what is left before opening the door. Joe Black's visit portrays this very good - if the supernatural parts are taken with a pinch of salt.
