Warning: Spoilers
I am a pretty big Charles Napier fan and definitely a big fan of trucking movies, but somehow I'd never heard of this gem.

I am not sure of my count per se, but I have been and IMDb member for almost 20 years, and I have seen a lot of movies over those years, perhaps a thousand or so in total, and this one ranks as one of best (yet most bizarre) movie experiences I have ever had.

**spoilers**

I think above all Sonny Liston seriously tripped me out; especially the scene when he fights the bikers who show up for no reason and seem to sit around wondering why they are on camera.

Charles Napier killing the guy in self-defence with a fork lift tripped me out.

Just the sight of the pilot-guy with the blue tinted glasses tripped me out.

The Mexicans playing guitar and dancing like maniacs tripped me out.

The weird guys who were the billionaire's assistants (the ones wearing wigs and outrageous 70's outfits) tripped me out.

Oh yeah and what about the guy shooting the sprinkler and his bizarre ensuing death... Wow that totally tripped me out.

For some reason the whole damn thing just tripped me out completely...

For the record: I wasn't on drugs when I watched it, but I get the feeling that whoever made this thing was on so much drugs at the time that it was in production that I was tripped out by osmoses 45 years later.

Absolutely bizarre! Absolutely loved it!!

When Trumpets Fade (1998 TV Movie)

What a great war film!
7 May 1999
I really liked this movie! My wife, who has seen many war films (but not Private Ryan) was totally shocked by this films gritty realism. Zac Orth gives a fantastic performance as the young 'fish out of water' Pvt. Warren Sanderson, (something tells me we haven't heard the last of this fine young actor). I guess comparisons to Saving Pvt. Ryan are inevitable - it's a shame really because this film can stand on it's own without them. Say movie lovers, - is it just me or are these HBO movies consistently better than those films released by major studios? Whatever's the case this film is one of their best!

Don't believe the box, but it's still cool though...
7 May 1999
I don't know but for I feel that the video box goes a bit overboard claiming: "5 star's" and "Dirty & Depraved" Etc... It's really none of that - it's just a damn solid little film. Babz Chula is completely fantastic! In fact, all the characters were great + so is the writing. Anyhow, if anyone cares I gave it an 8 out of 10, and would love to rent it again sometime. Good work Mr. Sweeny, whoever you are...

WoW - One of the best movies I've ever seen!
7 May 1999
I just don't know what to say about this film: I just saw it and I feel so ignorant - I don't know who the director is, I don't know who the cast members are, but man-o-man I'm going to find out! What a compelling, gripping story! In this particular case I feel that a few of of us underground movie geeks knowing and loving this film just isn't enough. I feel like I want to run out and tell the world - in brief, I haven't been this excited about a film in a long, long time!

The Jericho Mile (1979 TV Movie)

I've never given a movie a 10 out of 10 before...
7 May 1999
I've never given a movie a ten out of ten before but this is the closest I have ever come (I gave it a 9). There are very few movies that I truly love, this however is one of them. With it's gritty realism, fantastic on-site locationing, and it's great soundtrack it literally blew my young mind when I first saw it in 1979. At that point I didn't know about prisons, violence, racial tensions, or the struggle to survive & live free. I doubt that anyone who is an adult, or for that matter anyone who is growing up in todays world could be impacted by this film in the same way I was all those years ago, but I will say this: "if you haven't seen this movie I envy you"; this is because you have the chance to see this great film for the frist time. For each of us they're different, but here's to the rarest movies of them all: the ones we actually love...

A great film, with a great cast!
21 February 1999
What a great Film, I really enjoyed its look at a subject which is too harsh to get serious attention. I guess anyone who listens to music like that will sooner or later end up on a beach with a bayonette in their neck...

Loved it! Just loved it!
21 February 1999
Good acting + good story + good directing + cool gang fights = a great independent effort!

I admire Jim Van Bebber and his crew a great deal; it couldn't be easy to put together such an excellent film with such scant resources. It's a crime that only 10 or so people have voted on this movie - "Deadbeat at Dawn" is what independent film making is all about!

It gave me nightmares!
21 February 1999
I am a hardcore horror movie buff; untill I saw this film I'd given up all hope of ever being scared by a movie. What's strange is that I would hesitate to recommend it - It's so low budget most people would just laugh at it; somehow though I connected with this movie on a very personal level. I hope there are some others who feel the same...

Like relics from the fairy tales my mother told me as a child, this film will always haunt me...

I'm glad I'm not alone in liking this film...
21 February 1999
Yes, in some ways this film is flawed, but I really maintain that the reason why it is so disliked is because it is not understood. By no account does it measure up to it's predecessor, but had to watch it several times until I understood it - I liked it more and more each time I watched it. Give it a second chance on a cheap rental night.

Penelope Ann Miller almost ruined this movie!
20 February 1999
Although she has improved quite a bit as an actress Penelope Ann Miller just stunk in this film. The rest of the cast is great - especially Penn. Worth seeing.

Sophia Coppola ruined this movie!
20 February 1999
I feel that this movie had moments of greatness, but other than the fact that her dad directed it how did Sophia Coppola get on screen? She is totally outclassed by an otherwise excellent cast. Maybe it's just me but she makes me want to put my foot through the screen! Well, at least she only ruins her dad's films - I can imagine why anyone else would have reason to hire her...

Small Faces (1995)
The best movie that no one has ever heard of...
15 February 1999
Without a doubt one of the finest gang/youth films ever! I know several guys who grew up in Glasgow in the 1960's and I'll never look at them the same way again, (And, I thought that the gang members in Boyz N' the Hood were tough... They have nothing on Charlie Sloan and the boys: "Glen ya' Bass!"). The only down side to the film is that I had to watch it with the close captioning on, because I their accents were too strong for me to follow. Anyway, a fantastic effort + a must see! Some other IMDb patron said: "I wish I could make the whole world see this movie" - I myself can't put it better than that.
