Hope Floats (1998)

Huge Disappointment
26 March 1999
All I asked for was a little escapism from this movie. It was not to be. I spent the entire time yelling at the characters (I was home alone) for making such stupid decisions and having such stupid lines. The characters were AWFUL (someone please tell Harry Connick Jr he has no right to be in front of a movie camera unless he's singing), and there was NO spark between Bullock and Connick. What's the point of a romantic comedy if you can't pretend for an instant that the two leads could possibly have a reason for getting together?

DO NOT SEE THIS MOVIE.

A visual delight from beginning to end
26 March 1999
I love this movie. I love the cinematography, the acting, the story..Persuasion is a visual delight from beginning to end with fantastic characters, wonderful direction (finally a director who knows when silence and significant glances are worth morth than pages of useless dialogue)...

The greatest thing about this movie is that it gets better every time you see it. Amanda Root's soulful eyes become even more affecting, Ciarin whatshisname becomes more handsome and likeable, and the annoying hypochondriac sister becomes more hilarious (if that's possible, which in this movie, it is!).

I know this review is very vague. Suffice it to say, I've seen this movie a dozen times and I can't wait to see it a dozen more times.

Definitely my favorite Jane Austen movie.

Overboard (1987)
One of my all-time favorites

That's right, this romantic comedy schmuck fest makes my all time favorites. I have seen this movie over a dozen times and I love it every time. Why don't any new romantic comedies come along that steal your heart like this one? Because nobody can do comedy like Goldie Hawn, and it's hard to recreate the chemistry that Hawn and Russell had in this movie. This movie does everything right. It doesn't pretend to be anything artsy or nouveau; it just presents a great story with good characters (along with fantastic supporting characters). What else do you need in life?
