Girl Stroke Boy (1971)
Streaming now May 2018
As of May 2018, this odd movie is available to stream for free on FilmRise and on Fawesome.tv. The transfer looks quite a bit better than my VHS cassette but the sound problems are the same. Roku search results state HD but I think it isn't really.
Did Bill Murray steal the comb-over in Kingpin from Michael Hordern?
Barkhaa (2015)
Very Enjoyable
As I write this, the movie is a 99-cent rental or $5 purchase on FandangoNow. I bought it on spec and found it to be well worth the $5. I'll be looking for the DVD to lend to friends. It has good music and choreography. Crank up your bass and give your subwoofer a workout. Again, it's very enjoyable and probably better than most of the Bollywood movies on Netflix. (Of the Bollywood movies I've seen on Netflix, Jab We Met is probably my favorite.)
For comparison, it isn't Fanaa or Mission Kashmir, my all-time favorites. It isn't Om Shanti Om but it's right up there in quality. Well worth checking out.
En esta primavera (1979)
Cheesy fun
I saw this movie on cable and taped it in the 80's then started looking for it on video. In Mexico I found the pseudo soundtrack (Juan Gabriel canta las canciones de su pelicula En Esta Primavera) on which Por Creer en Ti is sung by Juan Gabriel instead of Estrellita. Finally in 2005 the DVD turned up packaged with a "tribute" to Juan Gabriel. It's cheesy but it's fun. The music is fine - En Esta Primavera the song has been on several compilations of Juan Gabriel's hits. The story is contrived. The acting is from hunger. But it's fun to see 70's Mexico City and places I've been to. And again, the music is fine! Maybe someday I'll find the Estrellita version of Por Creer en Ti.
Aashiq Banaya Aapne: Love Takes Over (2005)
My first Bollywood musical experience
Having scanned through the DVD and having somewhat enjoyed the music and dancing, I was surprised to see a very negative review in the User Comments. Then I watched the movie. It was pretty bad. The surprise is that BOTH guys are bad but she ends up going for one of them anyway! The songs were the highlights of the movie but they had problems such as the abrupt change of location (to London) or the way both male leads appeared to share a single singing voice. That said, I'm tempted to buy the soundtrack at the store that rents the DVD movie because the music and the songs were enjoyable on their own. But don't expect a lot if you choose to view the movie.
