Hedwig and the Angry Inch (2001)
Whigs are not enough
I was looking forward to this but was so disappointed. The music is terrible from start to finish. Cameron is a gifted performer but the story is just not good enough. I didn't care enough about Hedwig to be interested in how it ended. I was almost asleep by the finish.
Moulin Rouge! (2001)
Slow down Baz
Great cutting, pity it didn't allow the audience time to enjoy what was actually happening on screen. If there was a great dance sequence in there I missed it. On the other hand Jim Broadbent is great as Zidler. Shame I can't be as positive about Kidman and McGregor. There was no chemistry between them and it was impossible to believe in their 'love.'
It seems to me this film is walking a tightrope between utter brilliance and cringe inducing embarrassment. This is reflected in peoples' reaction to it being either ecstatic or vehemently hostile.
Jurassic Park III (2001)
The best blockbuster by far this year
I was anticipating a clichéd boring romp through the jungle but pleasantly surprised by how engrossing this film was. The only complaint was the sudden ending and faint surprise at the lack of the now traditional false ending. I don't know why they did this but I could have happily sat through another 20 mins.
I'm relieved to be able to leave the cinema without the empty feeling so many of this year's crop of blockbusters left me with. It's not a great film but it is decent enough. Certainly better than The Mummy Returns, Tomb Raider, et al. (I have watched some trash this year)
Pearl Harbor (2001)
What a dreary film
Three hours of not much happening. Even the when the special effects were on screen I wasn't interested. A ridiculous love triangle that doesn't convince and acting as wooden as the ballustrades they occasionally lean on. The historical inaccuracies are merely the least of this film's faults.
Queer as Folk (1999)
A complete scream from start to finish
A joy to watch, these boys will make you laugh and cry. These men are not typical of Gay men but then they're not supposed to be! But I challenge anyone not to see something they can identify with in the lives of these characters.
