Fearless (1993)
Tripe
"Fearless" is a terribly didactic and maudlin film. As a lover of movies, it pains me to say this about one, but I hated it. I felt like I was being made to feel that I wasn't living life to the fullest because I didn't thoroughly enjoy my last strawberry. The last thing I want is to be made to feel less than someone without being inspired to reach their heights. I thought Jeff Bridges' character was a jerk and Rosie Perez's was an annoyance. The two of them reminded me of my Sesame Street days, which were not long ago. Each line they delivered sounded like those of muppets: Rosie like Elmo and Jeff like Fozzie Bear. Every time he spoke, I found myself picturing him in a goofy little hat and covered with fur, which made his moral instructions hard to take seriously. If you like Jeff Bridges, check him out as "The Dude" in "The Big Lebowski."
There were also many irrelevant subplots: that of the woman he visits after the crash, the role of the psychiatrist and the scheming lawyer (a terrible character, stereotypically unctuous and over-acted by Tom Hulce, yes, Wolfie), and the clingy kid. All detours that could have been productive had the film ever led up to anything with the main story, let alone the sidetrips. Great crash scene, however, very well done to beautiful music and in wonderful luminescence. But the rest, like a strawberry, is hard to swallow.
Batman & Mr. Freeze: SubZero (1997)
By far the best Batman movie
One thing that I have always liked about Batman is that the villains are not simply bad people who somehow acquired radio-active flying powers as so many have in the Superman cartoons. They are real people with psychological problems that torment them to the point of no return. Yeah, some of them do have special suits and ray guns, as Mr. Freeze does in "Batman & Mr. Freeze: SubZero" but it is not only necessary to his character, it is necessary for his survival. The survival of Mrs. Nora Fries also hangs on the line and a desperate Mr. Freeze tries to save her by performing a total organ transplant. The only problem is finding a donor who matches Nora's rare blood type. Conveniently, Dick's tentative girlfriend, Barbara "Batgirl" Gordon, the Police chief's daughter, shares this blood type and is registered at the hospital as a blood donor. She is captured and held hostage and it is up to Batman and Robin to save her. The explosive climax, as well as the rest of the film, is animated beautifully in Film Noir/New York style dark reds. Well done and well voiced.
Primary Colors (1998)
There must be something wrong with me...
Well, everyone else seemed to love this movie. I on the other hand could not stand it. I hated every minute of the drawn out, obvious, over acted, headachey scenes. This film was torture to watch. First off, let's hit the audience over the head with the ever-so-subtle parallels here. Need I say more about the obvious Clinton Scandal train jumpers that made this film? OK, I will. Each scene was painfully over acted, mostly by Travolta and Bates. I came away from this film with no desire to see another Travolta movie again with the exception of Pulp Fiction. I was sickened by his strained and squinty demeanor. Each throaty word sounded like the exhausted output of a fireplace bellows, whose entire life has been spent inhaling and exhaling smoke. But Bates, with her over acted lesbian cowboy character put me over the edge. Her character was not only extreme but hypocritical as well. I found it very difficult to sympathize with her character and thought that suicide was grossly unnecessary, however, if she had to have died, I would have appreciated it if she had killed herself earlier in the picture. I truly am baffled by the acclaim her performance was given. I thought it was a poor character whose actor ruined any chance of likability by over acting. If you have any comments you would like to share with me, feel free to. I really am a nice person, I just didn't enjoy this film.
The Eye Creatures (1967)
This film is only good for one purpose...
I have only seen this film in one form, as a Mystery Science Theater 3000 movie. For this purpose, The Eye Creatures, or as it said in the title shot, The The Eye Creatures, seemed to go above and beyond the call of duty. Not only was the plot and script terrible, but it was full of stupid blunders, i.e., the creature is wearing tennis shoes or his zipper is showing.
