Meet the Parents (2000)
The funniest movie since "Something About Mary" and "American Pie"
I attended the Dallas premiere of "Meet the Parents" on May 21, 2000. This is the funniest movie since "Something About Mary" and "American Pie". If you liked those movies, you will love this film just as much. See this movie in a theater where the whole audience will be laughing with you. This film is hysterical and I gave it a 9..
Dr. T & the Women (2000)
A great movie and a must see for the Dallas/Ft. Worth Metro.
I attended the Dallas premiere/fundraiser of "Dr. T and the Women" on September 24, 2000. In attendance was Director Robert Altman, writer Anne Rapp, actress Janine Turner, musician/composer Lyle Lovett, and about 100 other industry people who were involved in the production. The movie is about an affluent Dallas gynocologist and his dysfunctional family. I live in the city of Denton, which is about 30 miles north of Dallas. This movie is very accurate in its depiction of the affluent Dallas crowd. This was cool because the same flashy "money" people portrayed in the movie were also in the theater watching the premiere (and preparing for the after dinner party). It made for some awkward, but very funny moments in the theater. After the screening, there was a Q&A session with Robert Altman, Anne Rapp, Janine Turner, and Lyle Lovett. Writer Anne Rapp said that the screenplay for the film began with a four page short story. Director Robert Altman asked her to expand the short story into a feature length screenplay. All of the panelists and the industry audience members had nothing but kind words for actor Richard Gere. Lyle Lovett who did the soundtrack really shined at the premiere. He struck me as "the real deal". He seemed appreciative and grateful for the contribution he was able to make to the film. Director Robert Altman said that he really does not enjoy watching his own films, but that he loves to watch an audience watch his films. I won't give away any spoilers (especially the one Mr. Altman asked everyone not to give away), but the movie is excellent. Everyone in the Dallas/Ft. Worth Metroplex should enjoy the film (unless it hits too close to home...or you just don't get it). I hope everyone enjoys it as much as I did. I rated it an 8.
Beat (2000)
An excellent movie about William Burroughs before he became a famous literary icon
I saw the premiere of this film tonight at the USA Film Festival in Dallas, Texas. Prior to this movie, I knew very little about William Burroughs. The producer, Donald Zuckerman spoke before the showing. He explained that after the film's showing at the Cannes Film Festival, they decided to completely re-edit the movie. As a result, the final film print of this movie was not finished for our festival(or compatible with our theater). As a result, we viewed the movie in the theater on a VHS video projected on the screen with a LCD projector and two speakers (on stands) set up on each side of the screen. The producer took some questions before the movie began and stated that the film was closely based on actual factual events. He stated that they did not use "one" specific source (or screenplay) but accumulated the facts from many verifiable sources. Mr. Zuckerman stated that all the scenes were filmed at the actual locations where they took place. The Mexico apartment footage was filmed at the actual location where William Burrough's and his wife Joan lived. The film makers used the apartment across the street because the actual apartment had been demolished.
I enjoyed the movie immensely. There were some initial distracting sound problems, but you won't have these in a normal showing. After the audio problems were fixed, I was glued to the screen. The movie begins and ends during the period before the group of friends became famous. Keifer Sutherland, Courtney Love, Ron Livingston, and Norman Reedus all did a superb job in their performances. Courtney Love was amazing and captivating in her role of Joan Villmer.
Anyone interested or just curious about William Burroughs or the Beat era should definitely see this movie. I gave it a nine.
Babettes gæstebud (1987)
A flawless film about the better qualities of human beings.
This film is about sisters who have dedicated their life to their father who was a religious sect leader in their small Dutch village. After their father's death, the sisters struggle to maintain life in the village as their father would have wanted it. Babette enters the story as a desperate woman on the run from her native France. The sisters take her into their home in exchange for Babette's household duties. When Babette wins the French lottery, she plans a feast for the village.
Don't let the simple plot fool you!! This movie is intriguing and flawless. I rated the film a "10" because I could not imagine any way it could be improved. It's a movie that does not have a villian. It focuses on the kinder qualities of human beings and the way they treat one another. The scenery is beautiful and the acting superb.
Resurrection (1999)
A great cop vs. serial killer film.
This is a great cop vs. serial killer film. I saw this movie on the recommendation of a friend and it took me 3 video stores to find it. Be careful not to rent the wrong movie. The first 2 video stores led me to an unrelated movie also called Resurrection. When I first began watching this movie, I was a little leary of the acting. Some of the acting didn't seem to natural and at one point in the movie, my brother was laughing when the actors were serious. HOWEVER, after about the first 25 minutes of this movie, the stride picked up and we were into it. Its a great movie in many ways. The plot is solid and the murders are gross. Its almost as good as "Seven". The storyline may be even better. The bottom line though is that Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt (and I'm not a fan) are just better actors. If you like serial killer films, this is a must.
Das Boot (1981)
The best war/adventure film I've ever seen.
I can't believe I waited so long to see this film. I saw the english dubbed directors cut version with an extra hour of footage. I normally prefer subtitles, but the dubbing on this movie did not distract me at all. The movie centers around a Nazi submarine, its crew, and their attempt to survive in World War II. This movie reaches out and pulls you in! You can smell the foul odors of the submarine and feel the fear and excitement of the crew. I highly recommend this movie!!!!
Shall we dansu? (1996)
A truly enjoyable, near perfect film
I thought this film was just about perfect. The descriptions/summaries you'll read about this movie don't do it justice. The plot just does not sound very interesting, BUT IT IS. Just rent it and you will not be sorry!!
