Girl Fever (2002)
Horrendous
This is one of the worst movies I've ever seen.
The story is moronic, the actors are horrible, I don't see anything rewarding in it other than Erin Bartlett's casabas.
The way the 2 leads throw around the LOVE word toward the end makes my stomach turn. Was this movie actually written by a 15 year old?
Hopefully the 18 year old girls this movie is aimed at are too busy to watch it...its PATHETIC!
I'm sorry I couldn't give it less than a 1, because that is overrating it considerably.
Seabiscuit (2003)
Something for everyone
Hollywood makes movies for all sorts of reasons...their own pretentiousness, to make money, to win Oscars, etc. Why they made this movie I don't care...I went for it HOOK, LINE, AND SINKER.
Some directors make an ordinary scenery look good, some waste natural beauty, and others either are great directors or let our country's beauty speak for itself. Whether it was absolute direction and cinematography skill or not overstepping boundaries...I think our director Gary Ross has "the touch" in Pleasantville and Seabiscuit. The rugged mountains and beauty of the rolling plains are awe-inspiring, either direction or lack of over-directing are gifts I won't bother labeling Mr. Ross with.
This is the best ensemble cast I can remember in a long time, understated roles and excellent portrayals. I can't label any LEADING ACTOR roles, honestly. Jeff Bridges and Chris Cooper both deserve Best Supporting Actor nods in my opinion. Neither role was as dynamic as usually necessary to win, but you can't help but believe THEY ARE THE CHARACTER. William Macy gets a lot of laughs and some critical acclaim for his radio broadcaster role, and I really like the guy. The other two males are better.
Please don't ignore Randy Newman's beautiful score either.
Tobey Maguire is good playing a fairly dark character that fights his way out of a bad situation time and time again, literally and figuratively.
I promise that you will laugh, you will cry, you will clap, you will sigh, you will do everything that excellent cinema demands of you or you need to drive straight to the emergency room and have your pulse checked.
I think a lot has already been made of the Depression era and the symbolism of the rise of America parallel to the characters in the movie, so I won't bore anyone with retelling the story. I can't help but like a story of America overcoming obstacles. SORRY! I'm a proud American.
This movie, quite frankly, has SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE. I was in a packed theater and saw as big a variety of our population as you could get, all thoroughly entertained by a movie that succeeds even more than I anticipated going in. I'll admit it...I thought it would be GREAT before I saw it. I underestimated it in a large way.
Things to Do in Denver When You're Dead (1995)
Very Good Movie
I've referred this movie to a ton of people...have watched the DVD on dates at least 5 times and have never had one person be disappointed.
I really felt like an insider with the mob lingo. Very fun trying to figure out WHAT THEY'RE SAYING.
A very PULP FICTION feel to this movie...definitely with more of a heart. A tragic "hero" dominates our film, Jimmy Tosnia. I really think Andy Garcia IS Jimmy Tosnia.
The title of the movie is explained by Garcia toward the very end, very heartfelt, very moving, very sincere.
If you like mafia movies with a little more heart...this is it. 8/10.
Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace (1999)
Episode 1: The Quest for MO MONEY
I suppose you can't blame a movie for hype...(or can you?)
This movie is entertaining (isn't that what it's all about?) and has its good and bad points, but worth the price of admission.
PERSONAL OBSERVATIONS:
-Mr. Lucas has raised the bar on effects again, awesome visuals.
-I don't like Jar Jar JARHEAD and didn't like the Ewoks either, so THERE...
-Liam Neeson and Ewan McGregor were fantastic. Natalie Portman very good.
-Light plot, but fun to find out the "secrets" behind other storylines in the first (or is it LATER?) films.
-I thought the movie was SHORT. I was thoroughly entertained, and didn't notice the drags I keep hearing about.
-I thought some of the scenes were directly from the other movies (fight scenes, tatooine town, awards ceremony). BUT, that's not so bad...
So see it and ENJOY it, I did twice.
Keys to Tulsa (1997)
T&A Paradise
Call me crazy, but I really enjoyed this flick. I'm not nominating anyone for awards, but can't help but love the cast.
Being a heterosexual male, I am in TOTAL love with Joanna Going and Deborah Unger. SO SHOOT ME.
This one's for fun, gang. Not all movies have to reinvent the wheel. So pop a cool one and dig in...
Crash (1996)
???
I was speechless after viewing the director's cut video.
I think this movie will draw emotions you don't even want to think about into the open, I know it made me think about it for awhile.
If you're into the raunch and gore...look no more. THIS IS YOUR FLICK...
Unger is hot as always, Arquette the usual character actor great that she is, Spader weird as usual.
Twisted plot, but maybe that's why a "normal" person like myself needs to see this. (you too) True education and enlightenment comes from experiencing the good and bad in our fellow man, and this movie will drive you to limits of taste, morality, and sexuality that you may not know are inside of you.
Experience this movie, just don't get too weird afterwards, OK?
