Norman... Is That You? (1976)
Excellent comedy about gay stereotypes
Even though this movie came out a year before I was born, it is definetely one of my favorite comedies. It stars Redd Foxx as a father who tries to understand his son's homosexuality. Like most parents, he doesn't know a thing about what it means to be gay and has all of these stereotypical notions of what gay people are like. His son, Norman, is now grown up and living on his own. When his father, Ben, finds out that his son is gay, he pays his son a visit in hopes of changing him. The title comes from one of the funniest lines in the movie--when Ben gets to Norman's apartments he runs into a female prostitute and thinks it's his son in drag ("Norman... Is that you?"). The movie had me laughing from start to finish. Redd Foxx is great. Although a lot of the content is stereotypical, I didn't find anything offensive about the way the material was handled, and it even has a good ending. Highly recommended.
Moulin Rouge! (2001)
you'll have a gay ole time
This was one of the queerest movies I've seen in a long time, and I'm not even talking about the 15 fey actors or the lesbian kisses. It was just very Different. Sort of like "Dancer In The Dark" meets "Shakespeare in Love" with a "Fantasia 2000" backdrop. ... But I still liked it. I'm not a big fan of musicals (although I loved DITD), but I am gay, I am part of the MTV generation, and I think Ewan McGregor is very good looking, so perhaps I'm biased. Even though it took about a half-hour to get into it was a nice story and is surprisingly wholesome queer fun for the whole family.
The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999)
Watched it twice. Loved it twice.
I loved this movie. The plot twists, and character changes were just captivating. Matt Damon did an excellent job. Matt Damon is what drew me to come see the movie the first time. The plot and story line was what made me come back two days later to watch it again. Excellent. Beautiful. A love story, a suspense thriller, a dramatic comedy, and a swingin' sound track. Definetely the best mainstream movie I saw in 1999.
Happy New Year!
The Blair Witch Project (1999)
Absolute waste of time.
After all the hype I was utterly dissapointed. This was so boring. The ending was lame. I can't see how anyone could be scared by something so stupid. I kid you not, at the end of the movie everyone in the theater shouted "boo".. I don't know where the people who love this movie are coming from, I saw nothing worth anything in the movie. The home-video footage was a good idea, but the movie behind it was rather lame. Don't waste your time. We were so utterly disappointed that we asked for our money back. We didn't get our money back, so don't waste yours too. Go see something else, anything else. Ugh. 2/10.
Blast from the Past (1999)
cute movie, cute actor, 7/10
Okay, I'll admit, the movie was a bit unrealistic. I don't care how smart the dad is, he isn't going to build something that elaborate, plus, if he's so smart, why couldn't he invent something to test for the radiation levels above the surface.. Come on. .... but, if you can buy the premise that this really happened, then you have to admit that it was cute movie. I enjoyed it. The actors pulled it off quite well. It did become believable. I thought it was cute.
