The Replacements (2000)
Take it for what it is
It's a sportsmovie. It's got every sports cliche in the book: "I look at you and see two men. The man you are and the man you ought to be." But, hell, who cares? It's the Major League of football movies. Sure, it's not gonna win an Oscar, but it's entertaining. A good movie to kill 2 hours. You want drama in a football movie, check out Any Given Sunday. You want fun, mindless entertainment, check this out. Props to Keanu Reeves for learning to throw like a genuine quarterback.
Godspell: A Musical Based on the Gospel According to St. Matthew (1973)
Kind of butchers the original show
As a huge fan of the stage production of Godspell, I was kind of disappointed in the movie. The cast is great, don't get me wrong (nice hair, folks) but they really took an axe to the original. For one, they took out "We Beseech Thee" which is a great song. And they moved way too much around.
Worst, though, was what they did with "Turn Back Oh Man" which is supposed to be the real turning point of the musical, from lighthearted romp to a more solemn piece. The singer is supposed to be sent to tempt Jesus, and he's supposed to be conflicted during the song. In the show, after the song has ended, he screams "Get thee behind me Satan!" In the movie, he's laughing, giggling, dancing and playing the freaking harp. Come on. I don't know why they changed it. It couldn't be for time. The show is under two hours. The movie's about 3 minutes shorter. But I still love the music, so I can tolerate it. It certainly could have been MUCH better. (oh, and that new song they added, "Beautiful City" is god-awful. Sounds like a Monkees song. Oy.)
