Run Ronnie Run (2002)
and for the love of god, don't look back.
I recently watched a bootleg version of run ronnie run. it was hilarious. It is the fruition of a vision. tiny snidbits of all your favorite mr show skits tide together in the rich tapestry that is grandiosity. from the darkest depths of the modern mordor that is hollywood springs forth the effervesent spumoniti of life that is Ronwell Dobbs. Plus, the cameos were cool. I love Scott thompson.(and i mean that in a very hetrosexual, i don't wanna touch his privates kinda way.) He could get in my cd collection anytime. (that isn't a euphamism for anything. (scott, call me.)) Mandy Patinkin singing "Y'all are brutalizin me." was beautiful and inspiring. but i must admit i like the original Ronnie dobbs version better. If this review or comments says anything to you about the movie in anyway, it shouldn't. This is a funny movie, if you are a mr show fan you will love it. if you aren't you won't. if you've never seen mr show but like good skit comedy watch it, you might be a fan before the show is over.
Baby Snakes (1979)
Sublime talent, twisted mind
i love frank zappa. I didn't really know much about frank zappa the first time i watched this video. I was in a friends apartment and everybody fell asleep while watching it except me and another guy. We were glued to it. The muscianship is unmatched by any video i have seen accept maybe sign of the times or rashaan roland kirk at the montery jazz fest. i was so impressed with what i saw and heard that i was instantly transformed into a zappa fan. If you don't like this video but are still interested in zappa you should check out something from one of his other periods. I most like the funk/fusion sound of the early 70's ie live at the roxy and elsewhere. but the pure zanyness of we're only in it for the money is unique and wonderful. babbbbbieeee snnnaaaaa-eaaaaa-eaaa-eaaakes!
Donnie Darko (2001)
Mr. Vonnegut meet Mr. Gilliam. Mr. Gilliam, Vonnegut.
This movie is far more creative than average. It manages to take the pacing of Ice Storm, the angst of American Beauty and the confusion of Memento and wrap them all together in a relatively original package.
IT IS NOT A HORROR FILM. It is funny that it has been packaged as a horror film, because as I said before, IT IS NOT A HORROR FILM. It is only mildly dark on occasion and never tense in that "Oh Dear God What Is Behind Me!!!" sort of way. It has more in common with Magnolia then with EVIL DEAD or Halloween. (Both in my personal top 5 horror films) If you loved the movies Brazil, being john malkovich, 12 monkeys, Slaughterhouse 5 you will enjoy this film.
IF you are a fan of Kurt Vonnegut you might not consider this movie as original at all. (If you read this part of the review and think that I am full of crap and that this movie was "way so original" (no disrespect intended) then you need to read Kurt Vonnegut, esp. Slaughterhouse 5.
I liked this movie. I would recommend it to my friends. If you hated it you probably aren't someone I would consider much more then an acquaintance. xoxoxox art.
Evil Dead II (1987)
why is evil dead II my favorite film?
I love evil dead II. I first saw evil dead (the original) in the 7th grade. And it really was a disturbing and frightening film, for a 7th grader. So when I saw evil dead 2 in a video store i had to rent it. This movie is one of the first movies that made me feel like i was watching a live action cartoon. Bruce Campbell plays physical comedy and cheese to a T. And he looks like such a classic movie star while he does it. This is only a horror film because the title says so. It will make you jump, but it always brings you back with a laugh. The camera work in this film is brilliant, a total barrage on the senses. and few film moments are as disturbing and infectious as the giggling living room. if you like this film you should try and find Raimi's film "crime Wave". not as well made but it has its moments. Also Cassie Wesley (Bobbie Joe in Evil Dead II--the chick that eats the eyeball.) is from my home town, and we are all "backards hicks" like that.
